sanjay gupta is following this. he joins me now. there are two types of meningitis, sanjay. which type of this? >> this is known as fungal meningitis. it's a type of mold. bacterial meningitis is a different form. caused by bacteria, obviously. it can be treated with antibiotics. and the type of meningitis you hear about at college campuses, that's typically viral meningitis. viral meningitis and bacterial meningitis more common but more contagious. the good news about fungal meningitis, typically it's not contagious. it's very hard to spread it from person to person. >> so they traced the source of this infection from a bad set of steroid injections. >> we've been following this for some time. what happens is you have a manufacturer that makes the medication, in this case, the steroid that you mentioned. but then it may go to a compounding facility because it's arrived in bulk, they have to divvy it up into smaller doses. sometimes they will concentrate the doses, other times they mix it with other medications. it's not about manufacturing the medication as it is mixing the

sanjay gupta. 13,000 people may have been exposed to these shots. are the symptoms that people should look for? george mentioned neck pain. >> george and heather, so tough to hear your story, what happened to your mom and wife. it is difficult, especially with this type of meningitis, a fungal meningitis, you may know is more rare than bacterial meningitis. and viral. neck pain is one of the simp toms. people can develop not wanting to be out in the light at all. headache, sometimes fever. now they are taking some of the fluid and examining it to see if they can see any evidence of fungus within the fluid. it doesn't mean for sure if they don't find it, that he doesn't have be vigilant about this. i don't known they told you this, up to 28 days or so, if you have any symptoms i'm describing, you sneed to get it checked out. that's a message we have been giving to everybody. so, you may need to get checked out. >> have the answers you have gotten be satisfactory? you have called this a wakeup call for the country? >> well, i think that the lobbyist a

sanjay gupta. what have you learned? >> we obtained an e-mail from the hospital group that was sent to new york area hospitals and basically said it has been decided it is necessary to evacuate bellevue hospital, pretty important development here. we're here now outside bellevue, got a hold of that memo. we're here outside the hospital. they did evacuate many of their critically ill patients in the days prior. about 500 patients they still have to move. you're familiar with this area of town, you know, it is close to nyu langen hospital. there is a long driveway to the er at bellevue. people that know this area, know it well, that area is now completely filled with ambulances. probably 50, 75 ambulances i'm looking at. they're all getting ready to station themselves. they have stretchers that are pulled up alongside many of these ambulances. and my guess is that there is likely within the next several minutes an evacuation to begin. looks like it is pretty well organized and coordinated here and not in the middle of the

sanjay gupta. he's at bellevue hospital, sanjay, 700 patients now need to be evacuated because they've lost power, emergency generators at bellevue hospital? >> yeah. i think that's the best way of putting it, wolf. it's a big hospital, as you point out. about 900-patient capacity and usually is at capacity. what they did as part of the protocol was evacuate many of the critically ill patients over the last day. but what they realize is that their emergency generators are not continuing to work well. some of them are under water because of the flooding. you can't see this, wolf, but just beyond the hospital which is over there is the east river. the same thing that happened to nyu langone hospital just up the road has happened here as well as bellevue which is significant flooding affecting the generators. i should point something else out. we've talked about generators, we've talked to people that work inside the hospital, some of the generators are at higher levels, which is what you'd expect. 12

sanjay gupta this week about what's in this drink and whether the fda needed to warn the public.irst of all? >> well, with regard to this girl, there was a report, they said that she had an underlying condition.underlying condition, something that causes collagen problems in the body and caused problems in her heart. she had something known as a valve regurgitation. they say the cause of death was caffeine toxicity. they said it was a lot of caffeine on top of this condition. standard advice is if you have a heart condition like this avoid excess doses of cap feign but that's what they concluded here. that's what the coroners concluded. >> if we're talking about that much caffeine, how much was it in this drink? >> it's quite a bit. let me give you a little bit of a frame of reference here. if this were a 24 ounce can, this is the drink, that would be equal to about seven cokes or just as many pepsi cans. >> at a time? >> at a time. in this case what we know about this girl, she took one one evening or one night and within a 24-hour period took another one. that's i think sort of
