sanjay gupta and lee ana wen. sanjay, first of all, your reaction to the news, how the decision was made. is it the right decision? >> yeah. it's a big day. i mean, as you pointed out, it feels like a very momentous time here. i think the decision in many ways follows the science. we've known the benefits of these vaccines for some time that they are very protective in terms of you getting sick. they reduce your chance of becoming infected and newer data shows that the likelihood that even if you do test positive for the coronavirus after being vaccinated the chance that you would transmit that virus to somebody else is very low. so this follows the science, i think, in this regard. i think it still feels jarring to be honest with you, having conversations with people at the cdc last week even, the impression was that this sort of loosening of the guidance was going to be a long time coming still. in fact, the loosening of indoor masking would take some time and we would have to be at a low level, so i was surpris

sanjay gupta. we got new data about how effective the moderna vaccine is for teenagers.does it show? >> a theme is emerging here, jake. it looks very, very protective. about 96% protective. this was people age 12 to 17. you remember the pfizer vaccine was authorized for 16 and up. moderna 18 and up. it looks very protective. generates lots of antibodies, which is what you're looking for, to make sure you could actually fight off a potential infection, and it seemed to have a very low adverse effect, safety concern. so much of the same data we saw for adults, much of the same data we've seen for pfizer applied for eua for younger people. >> when it comes to vaccinating their kids, pfizer foundation family poll found 29% of parents would get their kids vaccinated right away. that's me. i'm in that group. 32% would wait and see how the vaccine is working. 15% would only get their kids vaccinated if schools required it and 19% of parents would definitely not get their kids vaccinated. what is your reaction to that? >> well, you know, first of all, the 19% number, if you star

sanjay gupta.ussed many times how this virus has affected our kids, and i just wonder when you see the new guidance from the cdc for summer camps, kids have to wear masks at all times except for eating, drink or doing individual sports such as swimming, that sounds really strict and frankly unnecessarily so to me. >> yeah, i agree with you, jafnjake. i think if you're outside you don't need to wear a mask. we've learned a lot about this virus even over the last year, and i think dr. walensky sort of was alluding to the outbreaks that occurred in camps last summer. those likely were almost all due to indoor transmission, not outdoor transmission, and even frankly, you know, team sports where you're sort of running by each other for brief periods of, you know, a brief second here and there like in soccer, you just don't see the viral transmission at this point, so it's tough, i imagine, and i do communicate with dr. walensky. she has to try to assess the risk for the country, large populations of peo

sanjay gupta. people showed up to get the shot they were notified their vaccine was not fully approved, only authorized for emergency use. will there be a big difference in the fda absolutely grants full none emergency use approval? >> i don't think there will feel like a big difference. there's plenty of vaccine out there so people who want it can obviously still get it. it may help change the minds of people saying i'm drawing a distinction between authorized which feels too rushed and now approval but the vaccine itself did go through the large clinical trials, safety, follow-up to gain authorization and now it's that same process just longer, and they are using that data to get approval. let me show you the data they will submit to the fda. it will look very familiar because it reflects i think a lot of what they saw during the authorization process. in terms of preventing illness across the board. over 90%, 91% effective there, and for severe disease, the kind of disease that will lead you to

sanjay gupta. he's also the producer and narrator of "race for the vaccine." as the director and producer at the global health reporting center. it's wonderful to have both of you. so timely to be -- to have both of you here and be talking about this. sanjay, let's start first with masks. i think that's on a lot of peoples minds, this new cdc guidance and vaccinated people being told they don't need to wear masks anymore. i think a lot of people now are saying, well, is this it, is this the end of the pandemic? >> right. no, i can understand that, but it's not the end of the pandemic. as much as i'd like to say that, i think it's a really important moment in time, though. and frankly worth celebrating. and the vaccines have a lot to do with this. i think, jessica, they made this decision at this point because as you look at the data in the country and see what's happening overall with the number of cases, they've been coming down very steadily. you know, 30% lower than they were a few weeks ago and the numbers keep heading in the right direction. i think that

you know, sanjay gupta broke huge news months ago that robert redfield who has seen all the intelligencet opinion and the biden people never talked to him. why don't you have a hearing. put in guy in front of a bible and congressional committee. see what he has to say. it's crazy to me that there's all of the people and institutions with all of the information that have never been asked. we went through the politicization of the origin, of the question that we are trying to unravel, and focus on not just the science. so there's a lot of things. there's a whole world of information that the biden administration will hopefully get to the bottom of whether the chinese government likes it or not. >> the two stories have been that it spread from animals to humans and the one currently gaining traction is that it spread from a lab from wuhan, what would the u.s. need to do to prove it one way or the other? >> well, it comes back to the same things. it may be hard to definitively prove this one. ultimately it may be a preponderance of the evidence sort of thing. if you go back and look at sars

sanjay gupta. pfizer has already got authorization for 12 to 15-year-olds. what does this mean for moderna? what does this mean for us and what does the data show? >> yeah, well, potentially, a lot more doses available for people in this wider age group is what it could mean. this data is coming from the company itself as we've done now for the past year. we have to look at this data. the fda will look at this data and vet it all out. this is what it shows here. it's 3,700 participants. no cases of covid in the group that got the vaccine. four cases in the placebo group. right away, people may look at those and say those sound like small numbers, and they are. these are considered bridging trials. so they're basically looking at their previous adult data and they're sort of bridging it to this pediatric data. not only the number of cases but how many antibodies. were the antibodies good in those that were getting the vaccine? and the data looks really strong. as you point out, even after the first dose, there was significant benefit. after the second dose, e

sanjay gupta joins us with more.lusion and what are the implications? risk and benefits? >> they looked at the data. there is trial data a few thousand children found there were no significant adverse events when people got this vaccine. nothing like the anaphylactic we heard with the adults. very safe and effective. in the placebo group, 18 people got sick, severely ill, nobody in the vaccinated group. there is benefit, as well. one thing to point out is i want to show you this graphic. you remember h1n1 in 2009 to give context here. that was a virus that primarily affected younger people. so yellow is covid, blue is h1n1 back from 2009. take a look. the point here is that hospitalizations from covid even among this age group are greater than they were with h1n1, which was something that of obviously we took seriously. you had it. >> i did, too. >> we were with the marines in afghanistan. last week the cdc warned that childhood vaccinations for other infectious diseases plunged since the start of the pandemic for th

sanjay gupta. and several were waiting for the cdc sign-off of the pfizer vaccine for kids 12 to 15. and that finally just happened and what does that mean? >> it basically means that the vaccine which is in, you know, a high supply now in many places around the country can be given to 12 to 15-year-olds, and states that were doing it on their own anyway, and the federal sites were waiting for the cdc sign-off, and now all of the sites can administer the vaccine. there is doctor offices and pharmacies that president biden mentioned and in some cases some schools that are going to probably start administering this, and so we will see a significant sort of the supply, and the availability now of the vaccine to this age group. >> a cdc official today sthad the benefits of the coronavirus vaccine outweigh the harms for the kids 12 to 15. and give the parents who are watching an honest assessment of what those benefits and the risks are. >> so that is the metric for which these emergency authorizations

sanjay gupta, and cnn political analyst and "washington post" columnist, josh rogan, who is author ofle for the 21st century." josh, what do you make of "the times"' reporting that the white house still has a lot of unexamined evidence that requires computer analysis? >> well, i guess, my first reaction, anderson, is why didn't they look at that evidence? it's been 18 months. if they were sitting on it, what was the hold-up? you know, from my own reporting, i can tell you there is not only a bunch of unreviewed evidence sitting inside the intelligence community. there is also un-reviewed evidence sitting in other agencies in the u.s. government, including defense department, dhs, nih, and other organizations that have worked with organizations that worked with these wuhan labs. and it's kind of crazy to think that, 18 months after the outbreak, that there is still piles of evidence they haven't looked at and i think that's one of the reasons but not the only reason that the biden administration is doubling down on this investigation. the other reason is because there is increasing pre

sanjay gupta to answer all of them. sanjay, let's talk about what went on behind the scenes ahead of this cdc decision. this is a huge one. >> it is. i had a chance to speak to dr. walensky after the believing as well. we got a little bit more of that back back-and-forth. it was a big decision and until the last minute a back-and-forth by various people at the cdc to try and look at the data and come to this sort of recommendation. a week ago it was not at all clear they were going to do this, to give you an idea of the pace of. this we know the case numbers have been dropping. you've seen that for some time. they wanted to be sure it was going to be a continuing trend, and it certainly looks like this. one of the big things as well, we know the vaccine can prevent you from getting sick. two questions are how good are they at preventing asymptomatic symptoms, meaning you can still carry the virus. this was published in the "new england journal of medicine." but it basically showed after two doses, you're fully vaccinated

sanjay gupta is joining us. how significant is this milestone?ignificant if you consider in the context of things, i mean, memorial day weekend coming up, memorial day last year it was obviously a very different country and very different world. half of the country is not vaccinated. i think for them, they're going to have the same sort of decisions and risks they dealt with last year. but for the vaccinated people, it's going to feel like a very different memorial day weekend. an unvaccinated people is not posing a risk to a vaccinated person and a vaccinated person is not posing a risk to the vaccinated person. this is really about the unvaccinated people posing risks to each other. that's why they're going to have to be careful this weekend as if it were last year. this map here, we now know the numbers are coming down in terms of new cases, 25,000 on average. only 10% of people live in an area where there's high spread right now. things continue to improve. >> moderna now says their vaccine is safe and effective for adolescents. will this exp

sanjay gupta. what do you make of these cases? >> this is not entirely surprising. it is possible. the vaccines in the original trial shown to protect against people getting sick, they also do a good job of bgetting peopl infected but they're not perfect. yankees and bill maher has mild symptoms and that's the key, that shows that the vaccine is wondering. the new science is showing that even if you have a break-through infection, your chance of being contagious and spreading it onto someone else is really low. that's relatively new science. remember they used to say wear a mask even in you are vaccinated. >> except for the yankees, there is a lot we don't know. those eight either there is some issues with injection, we don't know which it is. it is hard to make of it right n now, i guess. >> we don't know if they spread it to each other or contracted some where else or from the same american. we are not sure about. but, i think only one person if i read correctly had any symptoms and the others did not. i think that's sort of the key here. there is not evidence rea

sanjay gupta to talk more about this incredibly important moment. perhaps the most important since we learned that there actually was a vaccine that worked. sanjay, tell us how important this moment is, this decision by the cdc. >> it feels like a very big moment, jake. i think for the long time we have been wondering when we'd get to the point like this. some people were thinking it was rushed a little bit, although we'll think that it's been a long time coming. what i would say is that the science i think has been clear for some time on not only how well these vaccines work as you alluded to. but also, how well they protect you -- how well they work in terms of preventing you from getting sick and how well they work in terms of preventing you from getting infected and most importantly and recently, how well they work in terms of making it unlikely you would pass the infection on to someone else. remember, jake, you say, well, i'm vaccinated, why do i need to continue to wear the mask? well t idea is you could be an unwitting carrier, silent carrier
