sanjay gupta is with us. you've been here throughout the day. you were here for another story yesterday and you came down here. talk about what you've seen throw the day. >> well, you know, it's been an on again/off again sort of search and rescue. you know, there's been weather, you can see right now, this is more activity, i think, than we've seen in a few hours. so for a period of time, when all the rain was there, it really did hamper their efforts. >> it's such a desire to find somebody and get to them as quickly as possible, and the very real dangers of the structure collapsing on them. of them removing debris can shift the structural balance. >> we're seeing a portion of a building, obviously, that is still standing, that has another portion that's gone. so we're very worried about that. and also, you can smell the air here. all the fumes. these rescue workers are in 15-minute shifts because they want to reduce the exposure to these fumes. >> which is something a lot of folks learned after 9/11. this smoke is not good. >> it's not good. a

sanjay gupta. just rewind to the beginning of this when we thought about the numbers that we were told we might see, i don't think anyone was prepared for this. and yet this has become our normal. 600,000. >> yeah. it seems incomprehensible and every time i've been thinking about these numbers it sort of still takes my breath away. i still get some tightness in the chest just thinking about this. i mean, you look at the trajectory of sort of where we have been and one of the things that really strikes me is i remember having this conversation with ambassador burx, and she told me at one point after those first 100,000 when we were still sort of grappling and trying to understand what had happened here, she believes that basically all the rest of the deaths after that could have been greatly mitigated or prevented. which is hard to say. i mean, that's 500,000 people. we knew that going into this pandemic if you looked at indexes around the world, the united states should have been the best prepared

sanjay gupta, thanks so much for your time and expertise as always. in democratic florida state senator jason pizzo. he represents this state senate district. he joins us. thank you so much for joining us. describe what you're seeing, some of the conversations you've had with people whose loved ones remain missing. >> thanks for having me on, jake. the past couple days identify been visiting the actual scene close up on the southeastern portion as well as the northern portion, and there are family members behind this camera right now that keep going back and forth as well as behind us and on the beach side. they just want to get to the scene and start peeling rubble themselves. so there's a consideration about the safety and the remaining structure that sits to the south. but it's absolute desperation. it's devastation. it's still being called search and rescue. but when each minute passes and the family members see that you just have a pancake number of layers compacted so tightly, it seems like no one's listening and there's absolute despair and the

sanjay gupta. sanjay, you were here the other day.'ve covered these sorts of disasters around the world, haiti, pakistan, nepal. what factors are at play if there are people trapped and as we know, 150 wonderful, wonderful people. they were just in the building in the middle of the night. 150 people are still unaccounted for. >> right. wolf, well, i mean, it's tough to talk about. and you're seeing it with your own eyes. people have seen the way the building collapsed as so many people have talked about is a major factor. when you look at haiti, for example, you had people who survived for even up to a couple weeks sometimes, these were different sorts of collapses in some areas. it would be a lean to collapse. so the ceiling was sort of leaning on one side versus just sort of falling completely down as has been described as a pancake collapse. that makes a difference. access to the basics. obviously air, water, and food. and then what sort of health the person was in in the first place. in terms of their own resilience. you have to t

i want to bring in cnn's chief medical correspondent, sanjay gupta. based on what you know, where do you stand on the issue? >> you know, i want to be very careful here. i think the doctor would agree we don't want to be empowering increased vaccine hesitancy here, which is always a potential consequence. no question that for an authorization, emergency authorization, the ratio of benefits outweighing the risks have to be proven for all the reasons that the doctor is saying. that may involve more involved safety studies. whe when they did 12 to 15 authorization, they did more bridging trials. they bridged a lot of the data from older people to that age group. with younger people, you have to do the safety trials and more complete data needs to be accrued to prove that. one of the things i think is important to remember is that we look at hospitalizations, deaths. i think one thing we have learned is that you don't want this virus. you don't want to get infected, because we don't know of the longer-term consequences, even in people with milder illness.

sanjay gupta. sanjay, what do you make of fauci's defense of the public health guidance changing?i mean, the science does change. that's the thing. people often times expect science to be like math, two plus two's always going to equal four. but we're constantly learning new things. and science within the world of neurosurgery, science continually changes. i think, to be specific, jake, the big thing that changed with regard to masks and this particular pandemic was the realization something that never happened before according to dr. fauci that this was spreading primarily, this virus was spreading primarily asymptom atly. and that's when it became clear that you may not know you have the virus, you may not have any symptoms, you may not have been able to get tested, you need to wear a mask because you could still be spreading the virus. we didn't know that at the beginning. nobody had all the information about this in the beginning, but as we learned this i think that that's why the recommendations changed. >> i remember vice president pence being in this studio actually telling

sanjay gupta. >>> thounow, some experts are calling covid the forever virus saying it won't disappears changing nature. for many former covid patients, the same is true about symptoms and side effects caused by the virus, called long haulers and they have been left with medical issues long after their initial covid infection. one long hauler was heidi, a mother and hollywood screen writer, after fighting constant other symptoms, she died by suicide late in hey. earlier i spoke with her husband who described her struggle. >> for her, it was multiple syndromes. she had the equivalent of ddoctr e e e ex-crush greating neuropathy all day, and she had a lot of pain as well in her intestinal track. digesting food was extremely painful. she had neurological tremors in her upper body and vibrations within her chest caused by the neurological issues that kept her from sleeping at night. she said it felt like my chest is vibrating and i have like a fizzing feeling in my veins. and it was extremely distracting. and when you add on just the discomfort of not sleeping, we all know what that feels

sanjay gupta joins me now. sanjay, terrific to see you.ow everyone down here is still talking about how wonderful you were with them when you were here in surfside. i want to talk about the delta variant. 26% of covid cases now in the u.s. what does that mean? put it in perspective. >> we're starting to get an idea of the trajectory of growth. this is not going to surprise you because you know this is a more transmissible variant. we can show you sort of the progress. it was a small percentage in the beginning. we were sort of keeping an eye on it. over time the percentages have grown. and now, 26%, as you say, that was roughly as of a week ago. some models say it could be as high as 40%, john. in l.a. you were mentioning close to 50%. at the same time the alpha, which was the u.k. variant we were talking about that used to be the dominant strain here, is no longer the dominant strain here. this is sort of expected because this is a more transmissible strain, this delta, it's sort of crowding out, if you will, the other strains. >> the "wa

sanjay gupta.have to say this feels pretty significant to us here in the united states as we talk about whether and where and when kids should be vaccinated. as they're finding in the uk, the coronavirus is being spread a lot by kids and young people. >> that's been one of the issues. we talk about the vaccines as being protective to the individual who gets the vaccine. there is a risk benefit an allcy sis. obviously younger people are at less risk of this disease. i've studied this virus for 15 months. i'm really coming to the conclusion, you do not want to get infected with this virus. we're still learning about the long-term impacts about this. i was talking to people last night. you don't know months later what the impact might be on the brain, on just about any other organ system, but the second point, john, to your point, it is a reservoir of disease that's increasingly finding itself in younger and younger people that's going to make it harder to get to the point of -- we're not going to era

sanjay gupta. sanjay, always good to see you. to add a warning to these two vaccines, pfizer and moderna, after some, a very small number, but some young people reported heart inflammation post-vaccine. first of all, how serious is this condition? i understand it's very rare, but how serious is it? and should teens ask their doctor before getting vaccinated? >> yeah, i think this warning will drive those conversations for sure between patients and their providers. and providers will also be more aware that this is a possibility. but all the cases of myocarditis which is something that's reasonably worth investigating were mild cases and easily treated. we do know that at this point. let me build on what erica was saying for a second out of this meeting. we put together this graph to give you an idea of how they look at the risk-benefit ratio. for females if you're getting out of a million second doses that are administered, you would prevent 8,500 cases of covid, 103 versus eight to ten treatable myocarditis cases. for males you

sanjay gupta. and, sanjay, thanks for joining us.a lot of kids are resilient. but this was an incredibly tough year. and i'm not even getting into the fact that there are 30 million americans that don't have internet access. you have school-aged kids yourself. from a health and wellness perspective from the children across this country, what concerns you the most? >> well, even going into the pandemic, jake, pre-pandemic, there were already concerns about children's mental and emotional health, which had been sort of rising over the past several years. by october of last year a third of parents then said that their child's emotional health was worse than the year before. a third of parents, 33% of parents in this country said that. so there was obviously a significant toll. what worries me most, jake, i think in some ways you alluded to it, but there are obviously some kids who probably will come out of this more resilient. they had a lot of resources. and while it was tough, and i don't mean to minimize that, it was far tougher for

sanjay gupta joins us now. explain why it is so critical that we get more young people vaccinated. >> yeah. first of all, the numbers, the 70 % number may be the exact number may be less important. it's pretty clear that the country is getting a lot of immunity. the case numbers continue to go down. hospitalizations and deaths. thankfully, i mean, 11,000 roughly is the average case number now. if we get below 10,000, that's the number dr. fauci and others have talked about saying we go into containment mode on the virus where we can get our arms around this. but why it's critically important is because these -- you look at the new variants, and we see how transmisable they are, and we see what's happening in other countries where younger and younger people are getting hospitalized. young people thought look, this is not something i need to worry about. that was the message therm given. that's changing with the new variants. that's part on the it. also a more nuanced issue we've talked about in the past is that

sanjay gupta there. rosa, let's begin with you. what more have we learned this morning especially about the number unaccounted for? >> reporter: you know, poppy, we were expecting this to happen. i know governor desantis mentioned it yesterday, that they knew that more bad news was going to be coming in the coming hours, and we learned that overnight three more bodies were pulled from the rubble. that, of course, brings the death toll to four. we are also learning about the challenges that firefighters were facing overnight. fires that not only started, but then were re-ignited. and so that just, sanjay, tells us, gives us a glimpse of really what is going on behind us and the dangers that these firefighters are facing to try to save lives. >> it's really risky work. and at the same time, i mean, there's a lot of people who they say are unaccounted for. the building may be fully occupied, but that doesn't necessarily mean there was everyone there. people come for certain months of the year and things like that. that adds to the cha

so let's get straight to cnn's chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta.resident biden on coronavirus tweeted this. quote, if you're vaccinated the most important thing you can do right now is go live your best life and make up for lost time. there are far greater threats in your life than the delta variant. there are others, however, who point to the fact that the "wall street journal" is reporting about half of adults neinfected with the delta variant in israel had been vaccinated. what do you think of what slavitt's saying? >> the vaccines are really protective, jake. that fact remains true. that's been tested now for some time. you have real-world data saying, okay, delta variant, alpha variant, how well do the vaccines work? if you're vaccinated, the idea that you are going to get seriously ill or need hospitalizing or die is incredibly low. when you look at the israeli data there's a couple things to sort of look at specifically. the cases are going up, in part, because you're seeing even among the -- i think they have 60% of the country vaccinated.

sanjay gupta. at this rate half of all infections could be delta variant infections.hink this will clearly become the more dominant strain in the united states and, frankly, around the world. we've been tracking this for some time. you can see sort of the growth over a period of time. so right now it's sort of doubling every couple of weeks. i think that's why people are saying by mid-july, end of july, it will become over 50% certainly. i think there's a couple of important things to the seriousness of this. this is a more transmissible virus. that's why it becomes more dominant. it can outrun the other viruses. it's 60% more transmissible than the uk variant, alpha, and the strain before that. you get the idea where this goes. the big question a lot of people will ask how well does the vaccine protect me? and there's more data coming in on that as well. the answer is good news there even when they pooled the vaccine data between astrazeneca and pfizer, for example, you s still get good protection against illness, against becoming severely ill. the far right, if you

sanjay gupta. good morning, we had the w.h.o.ming back? >> these are precautionary measures, and the guidance we have been talking about for some time is that it really depends in some ways if you're vaccinated or unvaccinated in terms of your overall risk. if you are vaccinated, the idea is you're farless likely to become sick, far less likely to become hospitalized or die. the reason you're hearing about the mask coming back is to slow down the transmission of the delta variant. so you get the idea here, i mean, it's sort of this notion that the virus is still spreading, let's see if we can do everything we can to really contain it now at this phase of things. so should you be worried? if if you're vaccinated, is it possible that you could still potentially develop a breakthrough infection, yes, low likelihood, but possible. what they're really trying to say, though, is if you're vaccinated, you are less likely to get sick. >> when it comes to the vaccination, so there's another recent study that shows that the vaccines really

cnn's rosa flores and sanjay gupta are at the scene and both joining me now. rosa, first to you, what is the latest on the search and rescue operation? >> reporter: well you know, kate, the death toll increased overnight from one to four. also the number of people accounted for increased to 120 and the number of people unaccounted for increased to 159. i just heard from jackson memorial hospital, they say that they are still treating two individuals, for privacy reasons they will not let us know what type of injuries they had. but spl of the challenges that firefighters have been dealing with overnight. i was here last night at about 10:00 when this started pouring. they also saw fires that they put out and then got reignited, just today we've seen multiple d downpours. and that complicates the situation given the fact that all of the water adds more weight. we're learning from officials about the dangerous work that firefighters are doing at this hour. we're hearing that they are working in about 15-minute shifts at the moment depending on the conditions insi

sanjay gupta. the other, breaking story, is a deal on infrastructure and just what to make of it. in a nutshell, $578 billion in new money over present spending and no tax hikes to pay for it. it is the product of a bipartisan group of senate negotiators. how fragile bipartisan anything can be in washington, there is reason to be skeptical about what happens next. so joining us now, cnn chief political correspondent, dana bash. host of cnn's state of the union. dana, you have been working the phones, and i understand you have some brand-new details on the group of senators involved. what kind of compromise they reached and how big it is. >> well, you know, we -- we don't have the actual paper, so to speak, of the details of this bill. of this deal. but the fact that we do have that statement, john, from five democrats and five republicans. saying, full stop, they have a deal. i know, the bar is pretty low, these days, here in washington. but that is a big deal. and why that is a big deal is following. first of all, because we don't see and hear a lot of bipartisanship, you know, t

. ♪ ♪ >>> i'm sanjay gupta.sort of see this, over my left shoulder. light is starting to break. we know that rain had been happening here, since about 10:00 last night. stopped overnight. there's been some heavy gusts of wind. and the weather, so dramatically, impacts these search-and-rescue missions. chad myers joins us now. i'm wondering, what does the day look like, going forward? >> today is the best day of the next three, sanjay. although, this isn't going to be anything perfect, by any stretch. winds out of the east at 14. gusting to 23. every time a storm or shower comes onshore, that's when the wind will get higher. and that's, obviously, when the threat of that building shift. you have a building that's standing up there, barely. you, also, have rebar hanging off with pieces of concrete, still, stuck to it. you talk about a 23-mile-per-hour wind or even 25 in a storm. that is going to try to -- try to shake that thing, and that would put any-first responder, any responder, down on the ground, really, in

sanjay gupta is with us. you've been here throughout the day.. talk about what you've seen throw the day. >> well, you know, it's been an on again/off again sort of search and rescue. you know, there's been weather, you can see right now, this is more activity, i think, than we've seen in a few hours. so for a period of time, when all the rain was there, it really did hamper their efforts. >> it's such a desire to find somebody and get to them as quickly as possible, and the very real dangers of the structure collapsing on them. of them removing debris can shift the structural balance. >> we're seeing a portion of a building, obviously, that is still standing, that has another portion that's gone. so we're very worried about that. and also, you can smell the air here. all the fumes. these rescue workers are in 15-minute shifts because they want to reduce the exposure to these fumes. >> which is something a lot of folks learned after 9/11. this smoke is not good. >> it's not good. and obviously, this sort of duration, hopefully, won't be as big a

sanjay gupta explains why the variant is causing so much concern. . >> reporter: we are just 300,000 doses administered. it's not 70% that we wanted. we are probably at functional herd immunity or soon to be there. numbers coming down, hospitalizations, deaths, all of that. the question is about the variants. it's interesting to look around the world at the variants and see how much of an impact they're making. take a look at the u.k., for example, i think there's a story that's important that you see in the graphic. the end of january it was primarily the alpha or the u.k. variant that was dominant in the u.k. what happened over that time period? the numbers came down but at the same time the delta variant started to enter the scene. that was primarily obviously people who had not been vaccinated. that is the concern here. we know this is a much more transmissible variant. the u.k. or alpha variant was 50% more transmissible. this is 60% more transmissible than the alpha variant. the people who are infected with the delta variant are more likely to

sanjay gupta. hey, sanjay. dr.fauci calling this delta variant the greatest threat to eliminating covid. why is this such a concern? >> this is just a much more contagious virus. to give the context, you see how fast it's growing. in the beginning of may we were hardly talking about this. it was just 1.3%. you can see what has happened. this is 60% more transmissible than the uk/alpha variant, 50% more transmissible than the strain before that. you can see where this is headed. people are ending up in hospitals who are younger as a result of this. we have to figure out now, is this going to be the strain that sort of becomes the most dominant strain in the entire world. the good news as you've said many times, if you're vaccinated, the vaccines work pretty well. they pooled the data between pfizer and astrazeneca, and you can see on the left there, the protection against serious illness very high. if you only get one shot of either of those, the effectiveness drops way down. it is the same discussion, kate, the vac

sanjay gupta. as you look at this, what's your reaction or level of concern or no level of concern? >> there's still a lot of level of concern after what we saw with the princess diamond cruise lines last year, right? that's what's fueling this. one person on the cruise ship, 700 became infected, seven people died. that's what's on a lot of people's minds in the public health community with cruises taking off again. what i see here is some degree evidence that the vaccination program is working. it's not surprising people might still have breakthrough infections. i think there are questions to be answered, when were people vaccinated, what kinds of tests were done, things like that. the big question is are people getting sick? we know the vaccines do a great job at actually preventing people from developing illness. we hear these people are asymptomatic and it's going to be important over time to see are there other people who subsequently became infected as a result of these two people who are in i

sanjay gupta. cially and their parents for that matter be about this? >> i think people should be aware but not alarmed by this, wolf. we are talking about something that increasingly looks like there's some sort of association here between the vaccines and this condition moaknown as myocarditis. we're getting some numbers of what we're talking about. you'll see it's a fairly rare condition in people 16 and 17, 2.3 million doses given, 79 reported cases. for those that are older, about 196 reported cases out of 9.8 million doses so it's rare, wolf. i think the bottom line number there is what the myocarditis background rate is and that's how these experts made this conclusion that there seems to be some link. be aware, chest pain, fever, those are some of the symptoms. if somebody has those symptoms after the vaccine, get it checked out. all these patients were able to go home and treated successfully. >> how much do we still need to learn about potential side effects from all of the various covid v

sanjay gupta joins me now. you heard that report, sanjay. you're a dad.uld you tell parents? >> well, you know, i got my girls vaccinated and they are between the ages of 12 and 15 and when that became ought raised i got them vaccinated. that was the result of doing lots of homework and making microjudgments and putting it all to go. i would tell you from a macro standpoint, pamela, if i would tell you there's hundreds of kids who have died of a new disease, tens of thousands who have been hospitalized and -- and there's a vaccine for it, if you didn't know anything else about this pandemic you would probably say thank you, there's a vaccine. we've already put it in the context of comparing this to adults but there is large numbers, you know, here as well. much smaller risk than in adults but not zero ring. also i think to phil's point in his piece, phil black, the long-term impact of this virus, we are still learning so much about this virus, a virus that can give you isolated loss of smell. how does that do that? what is it doing to the brain? my point

sanjay gupta. this captures our attention is you're talking medical professionals, sanjay, and there's still this huge chunk of americans including medical professionals who do not want to get vaccinated, aren't getting vaccinated. what's going on with that? >> with hospitals, that's going to be a different population. by definition, they're vulnerable people within the hospitals. they're most at risk. that's the point the ceo of hospitals have made. let's look at the country overall. what you see is obviously an increased willingness for people to get vaccinated. 66% roughly of people. this is the green line here, sort of either have been vaccinated, are willing to get vaccinated right away. you have a wait-and-see population that has shrunk somewhat over time, since we started looking over these numbers, and that red line has stayed pretty stable. it's about 19%, 20%. 70% say only if needed, 13% say absolutely not. what holds the 13% back? it's really four main reasons. some of it is just logistic
