sanjay gupta. great to see you as always, sanjay. so assuming dr.ommendation, as we expect, how soon could all adults be eligible to get their shots? >> right away. that's the thing. at the beginning of this vaccine rollout there was often supply issues. there's enough supply in most places so people who qualify, which is -- we'll see what dr. walensky says, but really should be all adults. they should be able to get the boosters right away. it's six months after you finished your second shot. and, you know, people always ask, what if i'm three months or four months out. there's benefit to waiting six months because they think that the -- you want some time between your prime shots, those first two shots and the boost shot. that should give you longer durability. but this was data that's been out there for some time. let me show you what drove this decision today. if you looked at vaccinated and unvaccinated, for most of the time what we've been seeing if people were to get sick they were far more likely to be unvaccinated. that's the red line. the

sanjay gupta joins me now.ryone who wants one this weekend can get a booster? >> yeah, that's basically what it means, alisyn. we'll hear what dr. walensky says. there's a final signoff necessary. but there's a unanimous recommendation, so expected she'll sign off on this. and alisyn, even before today, the vast majority of adults were eligible for boosters because it was people over the age of 65 but also any adult who had some sort of medical condition that put them at risk, and when we added up all the medical conditions, that was, you know, close to 80, 90% of the adult population, so this will make it clearer, i think it's just been a little muddled. now they're basically saying two things, everyone who's an adult can now, it's recommended they get a booster. they did a second vote, alisyn wrrks where everyone over the age of 50 should get a booster. a little different semantics, but strengthening the language for people specifically over the age of 50. one other thing i'll point out, alisyn, there was a l

want to talk with sanjay gupta who is also naur of the fascinating new book, world war c lessons fromw to prepare for the next one. so, sanjay, what can you tell us about the results of this physical? >> well, we had some idea of some of the president's past medical history. we also know he is the oldest first-term president. so putting those two things together, there were specific things that i think they were sort of targeting. we know that he has this history of reflux, for example. we know he has a history of atrial fibrillation. they were focused on the fact that his -- his gait -- his walking, anderson, seems to have changed a bit. they describe it as being less fluid, stiffer gait. we also know he takes this medication for his cholesterol and he had a colonoscopy. so those were sort of the major things that came out of that and there -- there were a few findings. his reflux is still persistent which is why they think he's been coughing a lot. you may hear him clearing his throat a lot during speeches. that seems to be the cause of that. as far as his gait being changed, they t

sanjay gupta is joining us right now.ok "world war c: lessons from the covid-19 pandemic and how to prepare for the next one." sanjay, thanks, as usual. did the committee, from your perspective, make the right call? >> yeah, it sounds like it, wolf. they looked at this data. they have been making the case that the vaccines continue to work really well. but there was some indication that some of the effectiveness was starting to wane a bit. they've been talking about this for a while. let me show you, wolf, what we've been seeing in the united states first and then show you what's been happening in israel. first of all, the vaccines work really well. if you look at who is hospitalized with covid here in the united states, you find the vast majority of those folks are unvaccinated. but the number of people who are vaccinated also developing severe illness started to increase a bit. i can show you what happened in israel up until november 1st. they found that an increasing percentage of those in the hospital were people who

sanjay gupta. let's take stock of this decision by the biden administration. up. i think it's fair to say at an alarming rate for weeks now. but at the same time, the biden administration is reopening borders to international travelers, as long as they've been vaccinated. is that following the science, the data doesn't seem, from my point of view, to back up this decision. >> well, you know, the thing about it is that if you look at what's been going on in the united states and europe compared to the rest of the world. the numbers have been going up there. but when you drill down on that, it's primarily along unvaccinated people. so, you know, as melissa was describing, these travel requirements are the people have to be vaccinated and they also have to show proof of a negative test as well. i think when you add those two layers in, that offers significant protection. where we're seeing numbers go up, whether it's in pockets in the united states or, as you saw there in europe, it's still primarily among the unvaccinated. as much as we talk about boosters and a

sanjay gupta, here to answer questions that parents have been asking.'s in some cases, people want to know is it okay for my kid, 5 to 11, to get the flu shot at the same time they get the covid shot. >> the answer is yes. pediatricians actually encourage it. they often encourage getting multiple vaccines on the same day, it is easier that way. you don't have to bring the child back. it is encouraged. it can be the same muscle but different sites within that muscle, for example. so that's the big thing. people who are administering the shots know that. they will have a sore arm for a couple days. get both shots. it may be a worse flu season this year. we didn't have much last year. sometimes there's a compensatory response. so get both if you can. >> a lot of questions have come in about if their kid is on the cusp, the cusp of 11 and 12 years old. what do i do if they're 11? get the partial shot or wait until they're 12 to get the full shot? >> i'll preface by saying this isn't magic. there is no cutoff when you turn 12. part of the reason that's chose

sanjay gupta, cnn's chief medical correspondent. sanjay, pick up where david left off because he was talking about mild infection, a doctor who has treated and vaccinated individuals himself in south africa with the variant had this to say about how they were presenting earlier. take a listen. >> the majority of what we are presenting to primary health care practitioners are extremely mild cases, light to moderate. and so these patients, they don't need to be hospitalized for now. >> so that sounds like good news, but when do we have a real sense of how the vaccines stand up against this variant? >> it can still take a couple of weeks to sort of answer that question, how well the vaccines work. i mean, there's two things that are happening simultaneously. one is they're doing laboratory studies where they're taking the blood of people who have been vaccinated and putting it in a test tube with the virus and basically seeing how well that blood neutralizes the virus. that gives you some idea of how well the vaccines work. also then lo

sanjay gupta joining us now to discuss. what more are we learning from these numbers, sanjay? >> well, these are the depths of despair as they've been called for some time, even before the pandemic. part of the reason that life expectancy in the united states was dropping, even before the pandemic started. this has been on on going story for some time. let me show you the numbers. as you mentioned, these are the highest we've ever seen, the number of overdose deaths topping 100,000. look at the change from the year before. again, april to ap real, nearly a 30% increase. if you break it down more specifically and say what are the specific drug overdoses, what's causing them? it's primarily opioids. even more specifically within opioids, that's the yellow line. it is this elicit fentanyl which is finding its way into all sorts of different drugs. you do see there's been increases in things like stimulants. methamphetamine is a stip lant, f stimulant. this is primarily an opioid problem, primarily a fentanyl problem and it got worse during the pandemic, in part because people wer

sanjay gupta the author of the very important book titled "world war c" lessons from the covid-19 pandemic and how to prepare for the next one. the cdc just strengthened its booster recommendations because of the new variant saying all adults here in the united states should get a booster shot instead of may. how significant is that? >> i think the messaging is much more clear, wolf. the latest recommendation before this was people over the age of 50 should get one but 18 and older, 18 to 49 may get one. now with what is going on with this new variant they're really strengthening that recommendation and it makes sense. what you're hearing from scientists is we don't know yet if there will be any diminishing of the effectiveness of these vaccines but you have what is called the cushion effect when you get a vaccine. a lot of antibodies, typically more than you need to actually decrease the likelihood of severe illness but if there is erosion of that effect, you get as much cushion as possible. you get boosted and boost up your antibody levels again. i think that is where the recommendation

sanjay gupta.appening, as you know, seeing members be updated about cases among children remaining extremely high. a lot of folks, the headline may emphasize the sense of urgency about the decision. does that weigh in at all for these independent vaccine advisers? >> i think so. where we are in the state of the pandemic, the context is important. the numbers have been improving thankfully, but they're coming down from a very high number as you point out. 100,000 or so children were diagnosed with covid this past week. some of those children may get sick, the percentage is small, but there's massive disruptions, isolation, quarantines, parents having to stay home, all the ripple effects. but the overall benefit of the vaccine to these children outweighing the risks is what the fda decided was true. as you point out, the cdc is formally recommending it because of that. >> let's talk about rollout here and how people who are watching right now can get their children the vaccinations. there are some di

sanjay gupta for more.talk me through what it means that the president is getting a colonoscopy. >> so, this is a procedure, a screening procedure to try and determine if someone is developing any kind of polyps or anything worrisome for colon cancer. it's recommended for really anyone over the age of 45 at periodic intervals. so when you had this procedure, most typically, you're sedated with a medication like propofol or something. that doesn't mean your breathing is taken over or a breathing tube is placed into your trachea. it's a sedation to make the procedure more comfortable. typically takes less than about half an hour, but you wake up from the sedation, you may be groggy for an hour or so, start to fin frisch the beginning of sedation to when you're fully awake. that's sort of typical and obviously varies from person to person. it's a commonly done procedure, again, a screening procedure. i'm sure the president has had other procedures like this. he most likely got a prep last night to basically ma

sanjay gupta joins us now. i know the cdc has to sign on still. this is a big deal. >> right. yeah.r some time based on what the data has been showing, which is basically that the vaccines continue to work really well, but over time, either because of just the passage of time or because of the delta strain in particular, the idea that the protection against people getting sick does seem to wane a bit. that's the issue here. started seeing some of this in israel and now pfizer presented a phase three trial, about 10,000 people, showing that that same sort of thing, that effectiveness waning against severe disease in particular. so authorization now from the fda, as you mentioned the cdc, i think that meeting is going to begin around noon today. we'll see if there is a formal recommendation there. this should basically make any adult eligible for a booster shot. >> including me. which is why i'm paying very close attention to this. the data on the protection that the third shot gives you, it is very, very strong against all infection. i understand that the two-dose regiment normally h

sanjay gu gupta. you know, eight weeks of falling cases, but then we're seeing cases among children ticking back up. overall, the cases seem to be plateauing across the country. what's happening? >> yeah, i think that is what's happening. we can show you sort of what's been happening the past few months with the overall case numbers. you can see they've come down. they've been coming down slowly. they sort of have flat lined a little bit here. let me show you this in the context of the pandemic overall. over the last 18 to 20 months. what you find is that where we are right now compared to a year ago is pretty similar. numbers are lower than a year ago. what was different was the numbers were shooting straight back up at that point. now they've been coming todown, plateaued a little bit, but continuing to come down because of the vaccination status you just mentioned. children are really the demographic where numbers have continued to go up. that's the concern. that's why when we talk about the vaccine

sanjay gupta. this was expected.18 and older, six months out from the second dose, can now get a booster. how significant is this? >> yeah, i mean, we do have to see if the cdc formally recommends it, but that is expected, that should happen later today. i think it is significant, first of all, if you just look at what the existing authorization is, it is for adults 65 and older, but also any adult who has conditions that put them at higher risk of severe covid. when you look at all the conditions, as we did, it really comprises close to 90% of adults. so this -- in overall i think it is going to be an easier communication thing saying all adults now eligible. but many adults were already eligible. i think the big thing here is that as we're especially going into the winter months, the idea that this protection of the vaccine may be starting to wane against severe illness, either because just the passage of time, or because of delta variant, we're still not entirely sure, but there has been some less protection. so p

sanjay gupta. vid-19 pandemic and how to prepare for the next one. sanjay's our chief medical correspondent, i should correct myself. aaron rodgers did absolutely nothing to correct the record in this new interview. how incredibly irresponsible is this? >> well, it's very irresponsible, unfortunately, because he gives a lot of voice, either intentionally or not, to the anti-vaccine movement at a time when we're still in the middle of a pandemic where over 1,000 people are still dying of this disease. 94% of nfl players are vaccinated. 100% of staff, vaccinated. so when we hear these stories, sometimes it becomes sort of like, you know, half and half. it's not. the vast majority of people in the nfl are vaccinated. i think what he seemed to say, and i think this was the biggest error, that he wasn't honest about the fact he hadn't been vaccinated and he potentially put other people at risk. he seemed to say that he had natural immunity, which can be a thing, but the problem is, first of all, we don't

sanjay gupta. sanjay, one doctor who's treating patients infected with the omicron variant in south africa told cnn this morning that the cases she has seen so far seem to be in the way they put it, quote, extremely mild. do you take comfort in that? what does that do to your level of concern about the omicron variant now? >> i think that could potentially be good news. this is a doctor taking care of patients on the ground there. as everyone has said already, tease are early days. we know that the majority of the patients that were initially seen were young, and those patients tend to have milder sort of courses of illness already. so, you know, how much of that is something we should take comfort in versus this is sort of a natural trajectory of this particular virus. i think there's all sorts of data. there's two things to point out. one is that south africa oop op was in a quiet time right now in terms of the overall pandemic. it's sort of late spring there, kate. numbers have come way down. wea

we are going to have our doctor, sanjay gupta, here in a moment to assess some of what she said. we do have reporters across the globe covering the spread of this new variant, beginning in south africa. >> reporter: i'm dave mckenzie in johannesburg. cases of the covid-19 variant appear to be rising fast here in this part of the country. there is now a sense that omicron is dominating other variants in south africa. hospitalizations are still quite low, but the good news, say scientists, is that vaccines appear to have some effect. most of those in hospital are unvaccinated. they will be key questions to be answered in the next few weeks, while everyone waits to see how bad this variant is. >> reporter: i'm cyril in paris. the same day spain detected its first case of the omicron variant, the country imposed a ten-day mandatory quarantine for passengers arriving from south african countries, including south africa. the travelers will be able to leave isolation after seven days and a negative pcr test. these measures, however, do not apply to european residents transiting from spa

sanjay gupta. sanjay, i went home from work thursday, it didn't exist. by thus night, the fears had really taken over the world. so what do we know? >> yeah. there are several things that we do know about this. and this is all very recent. and there are several things we don't know. let me talk about what we already know. we have been tracking this for just a little bit of time now. first of all, it was first described in botswana. and this was back on november 9th. that was the first sample that was collected at the time on november 9th. so, again, just two or three weeks here that we're talking about. it's now been detected in all of these other countries that you see on the screen. and it has all of these mutations. they are important because these are a consolation of mutations they have seen in other variants. beta, another variant, that was of concern several months ago because it seemed to have mutations that suggested it might start to escape immunity. it has some of those. it has some of the mutations of delta, which made it more transmissible.

sanjay gupta. as you heard phil just report the biden administration has this new january 4th vaccination deadline. it also applies to facilities that receive medicare funding or medicaid funding covering 17 million health care workers. you're not a political guy, a doctor, a medical guy. how effective could this vaccine be in getting the remaining millions of holdouts vaccinated? >> these mandates. they could be very effective, jake. it doesn't come without some holdouts still remaining and some fights as phil just alluded to in his piece. they could be very effective. there's been examples of thousands of police workers in new york expected to no longer be working by november first because they would not abide by mandates. so far the number is 34 people who have taken unpaid leave. united airlines put in vaccine mandates and had some 59% of their work force vaccinated before the mandates now close to 99%. it makes a difference. it is unfortunate that is what the response has to be in order to mak

sanjay gupta has details on why that's so important. >> reporter: with the fda authorizing boosters and the cdc now formally recommending them, boosters are recommended for all adults in the united states. that is something that is now available to people right away. people can go to their pharmacies, doctor's offices. a couple things -- first of all, even before these most recent recommendations, most adults in the country were eligible for boosters because if you had a pre-existing condition such as diabetes or heart disease or moderate asthma or obesity, you were already eligible for a booster. what is now different is that basically it's a blanket recommendation for all adults across the country. i should point out there was also a second vote on boosters saying that people over the age of 50 should get a booster. people under the age, they say's recommended. for people over the age of 50, they strengthened the language saying they should get a booster. let me show a couple of reasons, couple of pieces of data that were driving this. first of all, in the united states, we've seen wh
