and we heard sanjay gupta saying how quickly that happened.ctually is a very, very good thing for his prognosis. but this has to be terrifying for lebron james and his wife. the whole family, really. >> any parent, if you can put yourself in that position, to hear that your son's heart has stopped, he was very lucky that it happened during a practice with such an experienced training staff. this is remarkable and speaks to a little bit about the fact that this is more common than you would expect. bronny is an incoming freshman at usc. he was practicing with the team this summer. last summer, an incoming freshman at the time, a kid who is now a rising sophomore had the same cardiac arrest issue during a practice in july one year ago today. and the training staff in that incident rushed into action, saved his life, and they did the exact same thing almost exactly a year later with bronny. but, again, speaks to the fact that this is not something that happens a lot, but it does happen. and in fact, cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in

sanjay gupta. andy, first to you, what are we learning about what happened in that practice session? >> well, boris, we're not really getting a lot of details as of yet. we don't know if bronny collapsed on his own or took some sort of hit to the chest area, similar to what we saw with the bills' damar hamlin during last nfl season. we're still waiting to see what those details are. the good news is that in less than a day, bronny was out of icu and in stable condition, according to the family. and amazingly, this is the second time this has happened to the u sc basketball program in the past year. last summer during workouts, vince awugaku also went into cardiac arrest while practicing there at usc. he was taken to the hospital and ended up returning to the trojans program 191 days after going into cardiac arrest. what was great news for him and his situation. we're still learning about what's going on with bronny right now and his condition. and i'm dr. sanjay gupta can talk more about what's nex

sanjay gupta for some insight on the minority leader's health.g this moment play out, knowing senator mcconnell's recent health issues, he's also 81 years old. are you concerned? >> yeah, it was definitely concerning to watch. i mean, i think his doctors will be looking at that tape and sort of, you know, trying to figure out what happened there. he needs to get checked out. i think that's really the bottom line. it's tough to speculate just based on tlooking at the video. when you look at the timing of that, it happened around 1:56. we just put the -- looked at the clock and it was 23 seconds before anyone said something to him, and he was essentially frozen or not saying anything for that period of time. 32 seconds when he was led away from the podium, and 12 minutes when manu asked him the questions and he said he was fine so he seemed to have recovered from it, but something clearly happened. it could be something more simple, dehydration, a little infection, medication interaction, but i think given his history, that fall back in march, his

sanjay gupta. sanjay, obviously you're not there in person, this is not someone you're treating you're not able to see everything you could if you were treating him in person. but from your point what are concerning factors you see? >> that video is important to look at. i imagine his doctors would look at that to see if they could see any clues as to what happened there. it's concerning, omar. no question. anyone can see that. if you look at the timeline, to give context, it happened just before 2:00 yesterday. he was essentially speechless in that state he wasn't doing anything for 23 seconds before someone asked him if he was okay, and then it was 32 seconds before he was lead away from the podium. at that point he was moving on his own, which is a good sign. it was a long episode with a quick recovery. that's important. it could be a lot of different things. it could be common things, just dehydration, medication interaction, feeling under the weather. but the thing is, with something like this

sanjay gupta. d about after seeing what happened yesterday. he is 81 years old. is that typical? what's your sense? >> it's a lot more common than people realize. remember than just the falls people mentioned back in 2019 he fell and fractured his shoulder. you might remember that as well, kaitlan. there have been significant falls. i think people should realize once you realize once you get over the age of 65 or so 1 in 5 people that age have falls. there are three seniors who go to the hospital for that every year. add to that he had polio as a child so he's always had trouble with his gait, and it's not surprising. we talk a lot about chronic disease, heart disease. a single fall basically can accumulate a lot of risk into just a split second which is why they're so concerning especially in the elderly. >> of course. that is the current term. we've heard that even from the white house. president biden has fallen as well. what we heard from manu's latest reporting is that senator mcconnell's offic

sanjay gupta.e look at this again, this is about florida and ohio, and this is looking at overall death rates after the vaccine became readily available. what is the take way? >> well, the way that they sort of figure this out is they look at the observed number of people who died and then they look at what was expected in terms of number of deaths. that's what excess mortality really means. we can figure out those numbers. then these authors looked at voter registration files and said is there a correlation here between observed number of deaths and overall voter registration files. and what was interesting is that up until april of 2021, the first year or so of the pandemic, there was not a significant difference between republicans and democrats. but then as you say, starting in may of 2021, remember vaccines that's when you saw the f 2021, significant differce about a 43% increased death rate among republicans versus democrats in terms of excess deaths. now, one thing i say, you have to be care

cnn chief medical correspondent d sanjay gupta is joining us now. is this as bad as it sounds? we have known about these chemicals for some time. i think what the new study highlights is just how prevalent these chemicals are and there has been some new data, victor, about how problematic they could be as well. first of all, the chemicals, these forever chemicals, a lot of people know them as pfas chemicals. polyfluorinated al kyle substances. that's an acronym. that makes your pans nonstick pans. so you imagine a stubstance tha does that to your pans, if it gets in the environment, it's indestructionable. that's why they are called the forever chemicals. in this particular study, we know they are out there, how prevalent is this. they looked at 700 sites around the country and picked areas that urban areas, a lot of humans living there, rural areas and protected lands. these were theifferent types of sites. what they found was in 45% of the collections these chemicals did exist. they ested in all of these ea they were more prevalent as yo might guess in areas more affected by

sanjay gupta joins us now with more. th how prevalent aspartame might be in our food. what type of products is this usually found in? >> well, it's probably safe to say that everybody who is watching right now has at some point or another had aspartame. as you point out for over 40 years it's been approved. it's been used in all sorts of different products from beverages, which is the primary sort of product, diet beverages, but also things like break it's a cereals and chewing gum and cough drops. it's been out there for a long time. it's about 200 times sweeter than typical table sugar. so you can use small amounts and makes it very easy for these manufacturers to use that to sweeten their products. again, they've been doing it for a long time. one thing that's going to come out i think in these w.h.o. discussions is this old adage which the dose makes the poison. anything in a certain dose could potentially be poisonous or harmful. so how much aspartame is potentially harmful is the real question. the fda, as you might

sanjay gupta joins us now. so, what more do we know about these new concerns?ty, unbelievable. but you know, one of the things about these drugs, the way they work, they're known as glp-1 drugs. basically, they're trying to mimic something known as glucagon, and that stimulates the body to produce insulin. that's why it's a diabetes drug. that part we get. but what it also does as far as hunger and appetite, it slows down how quickly your stomach empties. that means you feel full longer, and you don't want to eat as much. so, you have to sort of effects there, one for diabetes, one for hunger. the concern is that even after a while of taking this drug, it slows down your stomach emptying a lot. this is what the study showed. this new study that five weeks these people are taking this drug, and the time that the food actually takes to clear the stomach with the drug, about 70 minutes. and to give you context, with a placebo in that same study, it took about four minutes. so, in part, that's how the medications are supposed to work. that's how it curves appetite.

sanjay gupta that, that this test is part of routine -- prospective nba players, and that is why bronnynow is cnn's sports analyst, christine brennan. christine, you have covered so many young star athletes in their time. what went through your head when you first heard about this health scare? but also what we have heard learned from sanjay that he, just a few months ago, was undergoing normal tests? >> kaitlan, what it shows us is that this is just such a shocking and unforeseen development, that you could think someone is healthy and all of a sudden you could have something that can just be so catastrophic. we learned that with demar hamlin, of course, just 6 and a half months ago, the buffalo bills player -- and, of course, it's a different situation -- but i think one of the very good things out of a terrible situation is that the national conversation we are having, and the fact that it really saved his life, especially high school athletes, because, if people are aware of it, and this conversation from damar hamlin now, to bronny james, obviously now people will hopefully underst

sanjay gupta. good morning, sanjay.ut they want to get the phone next to bronny james. what else are you picking up in those moments? >> that's the big thing. you see how fast that moves, that was less than 30 seconds, they're saying get next to him. i think some of that was redacted. you can hear gaps in the call. they want him to check for a pulse, hopefully someone has already sent for a defibrillator, and they may have asked that person and instructed that person on the phone how to do cpr. so we know whatever happened, and, again, that's just a portion of it, it was a fast resuscitation. i don't know how long it took for paramedics to get there. by the time bronny got to the hospital he was conscious, doing better and able to be released from the icu quickly. >> how promising that he was released so quickly? >> two thing, etches released from the hospital which is obviously good news. i don't read into that as much because sometimes people will keep patients in the hospital longer out of an abundance of caution. th

sanjay gupta is here to tell us more on this. how concerned we should be. >> they are talking about m misdiagnosis, can could mean got the wrong diagnosis or it could mean more of a missed diagnosis. meaning that they didn't get a diagnosis at all of what was really problematic for the patient. what they found were pretty big number numbers as you mentioned. about 371,000 people die every year and people who had some sort of disability as a result of these missed or misdeeg knows cease. 424,000 people is what the study showed. i want to be clear that overall going to the hospital, going to the clinic, the average person is less than 0.1% chance of having some severe problem as a result of misdiagnosis, but there were certain areas where you had the biggest concerns. things like stroke could be missed leading to severe outcomes. sepsis, pneumonia, a blood clot in a vein that could lead to something like a pulmonary embolism for example. an lung cancer. those were the biggest concerns overall with this. why do these happen? there w

sanjay gupta. interested in what you have to say about this.g of obstruction in the small intestine, but this was apparently a side effect of this kind of weight loss surgery? >> right. parts of this story make a lot of sense, and parts are a little bit more unusual. what they are describing when they say that there was a previous operation that led to this, anytime someone has an operation on the abdomen, inside the belly, you can develop scar tissue. it's called adhesionens. think of it like spiderwebs that develop and they can constrict parts of the intestines. this takes place over time. her previous operation was years ago. over time, it may actually compress parts of the intestine to the point they about become obstructed, strangelated. they are blocked, essentially. you are not getting food through and there is not enough blood throw. that happens. we know that that can happen and sometimes people with off and on pain for some time. what is unusual, though, is it sounds like maybe she had pain off and on, but the morning of she was compl

sanjay gupta is going to be joining jake tapper to talk more about this next on "the lead."ow common this is. >> yeah. >> and what's at stake when you're dealing with this kind of thing. >> yes, because obviously what happened to my daughter, alice, who's now 15 and thriving and very strong. but what happened to her in the fall of 2021 was an eye-opening event for us. she had a perforated appendix that was misdiagnosed. the doctors were convinced she had a virus. and that misdiagnosis almost killed her because her body -- she started to develop sepsis, which is one of the harms that is discussed in this study by dr. david newman toker. he's somebody who after this incident happened and after alice recovered anded a her appendix out looked into her case on behalf of johnson & johnson hopkins. it's harrowing. what happens is, in the study the doctor looks at 800,000 americans either died or severely disabled because of diagnostic error, which he says happens about 111% of the time. most of the time it's not death or serious disability, but 371,000 people died according to this

sanjay gupta. i always hesitate to ask you to diagnose from afar but this is your field and i wonder as you saw that really heartwrenching 30-some seconds there of that pause, freezing up, what struck you as significant? >> that was concerning. there's no question about it. and i think he's going to need a thorough examination and workup and i'm sure his doctors will probably look at that clip just to sort of try and figure out what exactly happened there. i think, you know, there's all sorts of things that come to mind but as you correctly point out, jim, some of those things will become clearer once he gets a more thorough examination. common things being common, u have to wonder if someone dehydrated, is this some kind of medication side effect, but also more seriously was this a petit mal seizure. or a mini stroke. that's speculation. manu asked that question. i was just looking at the clock. for about 23 seconds he was standing at the lectern before someone asked if he was okay and then it was
