sanjay gupta. musk's startup is not the first company to do something like this, and to be frank, musk himself has a mixed success record in terms of effectively leading companies and promising to dish out life-changing new technology. is neuralink worth the hype, do you think? >> well, the curious thing that i found is that typically when you have groundbreaking, brand- new scientific breakers they are covered in academic, peer- reviewed journals. the study was published on twitter, and what we got was a really compelling pr video and basically no detail to follow. i only bring this up because this is a man who, yes, has definitely changed different industries, but have a knack for launching concepts before there has been concrete behind them. an automated car is one thing. when we are talking about challenging issues that are medically, you know, with medical devices, and people who need them, not to mention things like ai and ethics, privacy, i think we ought to be a little skeptical. >> let's t

sanjay gupta.is an issue i feel like everyone thinks about constantly, particularly heading into the new year. first episode focuses on the relationship between body weight and our health. how should we be thinking about weight as it pertains to overall health? >> well, as you mentioned, it's complicated, and, you know, it's something we've been thinking about for a long time, but about a third of the nation's adults in this country could be classified as obese, which when you're growing up, how many people did you know that was obese? it's changed a lot. add another twist over the last few years, which is the new weight loss medication, ozempic and wegovy and mounjaro, everyone knows these medications now, and they cause people to lose a lot of weight. does it also make them healthier? the answer seems to be yes. so there's a lot going on here. what is sort of interesting for a long time, 200 years or so, we looked at something known as bmi, body mass index, to sort of determine is somebody actual

sanjay gupta. good morning. the question that everyone will have to answer themselves. supposed to have more than one drink for women or two drinks for men a day. how does our health relate to this? >> yeah. this is interesting. it has changed, i think, from a medical consensus standpoint over the last 100 years, since the time of prohibition. the general consensus is that there's no amount of alcohol that is good for your health. that's not what people necessarily want to hear. let me back up for a second. go back to the 1920s. look at this graph. focus on this for a second. this is what started off our thinking about alcohol and health. this is 100 years ago. this is basically looking at how many drinks per day, going from zero to five. what they found was that people who had zero drinks had higher mortality than if you started to slowly increase alcohol. when you got to two drinks per day or so, you still had lower than average mortality than the general population. once you started to get more than that, then your mortality started to go up. this is the j curve. thi

cnn's sanjay gupta neurosurgeon himself joins us now. so talk to me about, this authentic, that will help significant is it, potentially and who would benefit the most? >> i mean, we have known this is going to be coming for sometime. they got fda approval back in the spring of last, year to start recruiting patients. typically these are patients who don't have motor function, anderson, because of quadriplegic, spinal cord injury, or something like a list. so all we know is what you said, is for the first patient now they have had this implanted in their brain. this isn't a study or anything. we don't know necessarily how well it is working. we have seen, trials primate trials where you have seen them being able to move a cursor for example. now that this is implanted in humans, they will basically see, can it accomplish the same thing for humans? >> how does the technology work? >> it is interesting, i think we showed an image of, this it is about the size of a quarter. you put up that image, it is hard to, tell it is not very big. it i

sanjay gupta is here to explain. millions of people in the u.s. have hearing loss.tually live longer if they wear their hearing aids. >> that was the headline of the story. this is really interesting study they looked at. first of all, just quantifying how many people have hearing loss. the numbers, they surprised me a little bit, but you're looking at adults in the united states. about 30 million adults have hearing loss. the problem is the next line there, which is less than 15% of people actually use hearing aids. and there's all kinds of reasons for that which we can talk about. the study tried to say let's follow these people along. people have normal hearing vs. people with moderate hearing loss. you see what happens to them over 20 years. and take a lock here. take a look at this graph. the top line of this graph really so 24% lower risk of death if you have hearing loss. but take a lock at this graph. the top line is basically normal. that's normal hearing loss. even with mild hearing loss, that's the red line in the middle. there's about a significant incre
