sanjay gupta. sanjay can binge watching viral videos and reading nasty tweets really rot?ur brains well, the short answer is yes. >> i mean, it can change your brain. >> there have been some recent studies on this. it's really interesting. and we've known for some time that the, the sort of doomscrolling or whatever you call it, more than three hours being on social media for teens is associated with doubling depression risk. so that's obviously concerning the average amount of time people are spending. teens are spending on social media is five hours. just three hours can double your risk of depression. but what's more interesting, i think lately is, is this fact that they've measured these changes that occur in the brain. so, for example, the outer part of your brain called the cortex, the gray matter that can thin in response to a lot of social media use or just the scrolling constantly that can affect your cognition, but also the area in between. the gray matter is called the white matter, and that can also be affected. and that can slow down your speed of processing.

do more campaign, reminding you to get this season's flu and covid 19 vaccines. >> our doctor, sanjay gupta, is back to answer your questions about how a bird flu outbreak and dairy cows could affect the milk that we all drink. sanjay, the first question comes from vinod from houston, who asks, is there a vaccine for bird flu? >> well, jim, the short answer is yes. there is a vaccine for h5n1, but it's not really commercially available. there's only about 5 million doses. there have been some discussions about using those doses to vaccinate farm workers. as you know, jim, farm workers are sort of the front line here because of how much this virus has been associated with dairy farms in particular. in fact, in finland, that was the recommendation that farm workers get vaccinated with the small supply. two points, jim. first of all, the seasonal flu vaccine may offer some cross-protection against this. it's not directed at h5n1, but it may offer some cross-protection in terms of symptoms. the second thing is there is a discussion about various vaccine candidates to try and amp up production,

this morning, doctor sanjay gupta on call to answer your questions about the bird flu outbreak in dairycattle and how it could affect milk supply. so, sanjay vinod from houston asks, is there a vaccine for bird flu? >> yes. so the answer is yes. short answer is yes. there's about 5 million doses. so not not much of it. that's been sort of stockpiled for h5n1 specifically, but it's not commercially available to everybody. there has been some discussion about maybe vaccinating farm workers who seem to be the most at risk, given this association with dairy farms. they did that, incidentally, in finland, john, where they just said, hey, let's let's at least take care of the farm workers. so two things point out. there is a seasonal flu virus, a seasonal flu vaccine that may offer some cross-protection against h5n1. it's not specifically directed at h5n1, but may offer some protection. and there's lots of discussions to go ahead and ramp up the supply of the h5n1 vaccine, possibly even using mrna technology, something we talked a lot about during covid, which can, you know, accelerate vaccin

sanjay gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon who deals with head injuries in the operating room. doctor gupta, when you saw that hit, what was your first reaction? >> yeah, i think everyone thought it was pretty awful. >> i think if you're a neurosurgeon, it looked horrific. >> i mean, look at we'll look at the video here, jake. >> we'll just show it once, but there's a few things that are going on there. obviously the first hit and then sort of the rotation that you see of trevor's head and then the second hit basically where his head hits the turf. >> let me just show you on the brain model, sort of what we're looking at here. the brain is accelerating in one direction. that hit comes. >> so that's an acceleration deceleration injury. >> and then the brain sort of changes directions. and then you see it go back and basically hit the turf. so there's several different things that are happening to the brain in a relatively short span. >> there but take a look at what happens after that. this is really important from a neuro perspective. how trevor sort of behaves after that i thin

sanjay gupta is here for his on call segment. you can scan the qr code on your screen. you guys got to put it up there. there it is. and submit your question. sanjay, should i be concerned about getting sick from drinking the milk in my refrigerator? >> i think the short answer is no. thankfully, 99% of the milk supply in the united states is pasteurized. that's sort of the key to to this. it's a high temperature, low duration pasteurization. so 160 degrees for at least 15 seconds. and that takes care of most of the problems. the concern is jake, you know, we have a not insignificant about 1% of the population that is drinking raw milk every week. so there's a demand for this. it's again, a small percentage, but it's a thing. and i think part of the reason they do it is because of possible health benefits from the bioactive ingredients. in raw milk. there's not a lot of evidence behind that. but what we know is that there can be pathogens. since over the last 20 years or so, there's been about 200 or so outbreaks related to raw milk pathogens like salmonella and e coli a

sanjay gupta is here for our on call segment. wers, viewers submitted questions about these football related head injuries. katherine, in michigan asks, how do football injuries compare to soccer? and is there something about head injuries in football that makes the sport especially dangerous relative to soccer yeah this is a fair question because, you know, we obviously think of football a lot when it comes to these concussions, brain injuries and for good reason. >> it is a game designed around collisions around forcibly, you know, running into one another. >> but just to give you some context, and there's data on this how many concussions occur in football versus soccer. >> so just look at the the sort of respective numbers here. so 29 almost 30 concussions per 10,000 games in football. >> girls soccer actually of the two soccer's girls and boys was the next highest. girls more susceptible to these concussions and girls soccer than boys soccer around. you know, 4.875. so you know, roughly a sixth in boys soccer versus football

sanjay gupta is back on the call with us to answer your questions about head injuries in football. >> are you hearing from today pamela, just a lot of interest in this topic. >> i got to tell you we got so many questions, including this one all the way from barrow, alaska, from chris, who says, should i encourage my son to play high school football you know, look, i got to tell you, this is a deeply personal decision. i have three teenage daughters, so i don't think about this a lot as a dad, but certainly all the time as a neurosurgeon. there's risks and rewards to everything in life. i mean, there's a lot of rewards to sports, especially group sports for kids. i mean, we have an obesity epidemic. we have a loneliness epidemic. getting kids out there playing with other kids really, really important when it comes to football in particular, there's a concern about cte chronic traumatic encephalopathy, something most people have heard of by now. the thing to keep in mind about this, chris, is that while we pay attention to the big hits like we saw with tua and trevor recently those smal
