sanjay gupta. let me go first to you. manu raju. we've been watching you buttonhole senators over the course of the last 20 or 30 minutes. what is the word right now on capitol hill about where cassidy is leaning? >> and the you end up getting run out? >> yeah, and we're waiting right outside the senate finance committee where just in a matter of moments, the big question is going to be, what does senator bill cassidy do? he, of course, is a louisiana republican. he's up for reelection in 2026. he's also a medical doctor who has expressed concern about rfk jr.. s views about vaccines. at last week's hearing, he said that he was struggling with how rfk jr. is dealing just with knocked down the notion that vaccines are linked to childhood autism. now, after that remark, in which he said he was struggling, he did have extended conversations with kennedy on sunday. but in talking to and talking to cassidy yesterday, he was very clear he was not ready yet to make a decision on how he will ultimately come down. but if he votes no in this

sanjay gupta joins us now to answer them. hi, sanjay. great to see you as always. so, so much curiosity about this drug. connie tells us that she suffers from chronic pain syndrome and wants to know if this drug will treat long term chronic pain. >> this is. the big question right now. so the approval is for acute pain. >> so think. >> you know, post-operative. pain a broken bone. >> that sort. >> of pain. that's where it seems to to provide the most benefit. and that's where it seems to be potentially a good alternative to opioids. connie, i think in that question also mentioned taking medications like antidepressants, for example. this could potentially provide relief for those sorts of pains. chronic pain is still a little bit of an open question. they did this this trial where they actually looked at the use of this medication called shou zi chew for sciatica. that's back pain with pain that's radiating down the leg. and they found that it did improve pain scores about two points. so if you had a pain level of six, for example, it may have gone to four. so not

sanjay gupta, joins us now. so why what is the concern about this new variant?ink there's two main concerns. one is that, you know, when this first happened, when bird flu got into cattle, i think the thinking was that's a pretty rare event. that's not likely to happen again. and now it's happened again. so that's the first concern. and also this particular strain d1.1 that's the one that caused the more severe disease even led to the death. as you may remember, anderson, of someone in louisiana. so those are the two major concerns so far. it's important to point out no human cases have been linked to those particular infected cows, these new cows that we're talking about. so that's something they're definitely going to keep an eye on. just to bring you up to speed quickly, anderson, you remember this started back in november of 2023 when you first had bird flu, actually get into cattle. march of 2024 is when they detected it in the cows. specifically april. they found it in people. so you get an idea of just how fast that sort of trajectory was going on. later
