>> reporter: the volunteer oso firefighter helped find his wife, christina, and his granddaughter, sanoa, in the rubble. >> i'm going to miss my wife. and my granddaughter. i love them so much. >> reporter: tonight, he shares his grief with families who have lost loved ones and with so many others who are still waiting for someone to come home. a week ago today, seven survivors were rescued from the mudslide, tonight, five of them remain hospitalized. they are slowly recovering. lester? >> so much sadness there, miguel almaguer, thank you. >>> today for the first time in four weeks, floating objects were recovered in the indian ocean that were suspected to be related to the missing malaysian jetliner. nbc's kerry sanders has more from washington. >> reporter: it is the first time anything has been fished from the ocean since this investigation began, but almost as quickly as the chinese shared news that their naval crews had located something officials announced it was not debris, rather, just ocean garbage. ten planes from a half dozen countries are again airborne today, chris-crossing

this is four-month-old sanoa violet eustis. her body was pulled from the mudslide today, the youngest victim recovered so far. that brings the known death toll to 26, the number is expected to rise. 90 people are still listed as missing. john blackstone is following the search tonight. john. >> reporter: sharyn, the landslide impact zone is just about a half mile down the river. it's within raining here for much of the day, making conditions even worse for searchers already struggling in wet and deep mud. search-and-rescue crews are finding the job no easier than when they started. >> they have found people here. >> reporter: battalion chief hachiefsteve mason has been in e of the search since saturday. >> trees, mud, dirt, republicanses, boats, everything everyone would have in a neighborhood is strewn out here. it's basically going inch by inch through here and looking. they look at the area, they bring the machine in, the machine very gingerly brings up small bites of material, set it off to the side. people go through that
