these redwoods near santa cruz rely on fog for much of their water.ber of foggy days along the california coast is down about 30% in the past 50 years. if that trend continues, can these redwoods we love so much survive where they're standing? and in what condition? and where can we protect them? >> we want to know where redwoods are most likely to do well in the future. we can set up parks around those areas in particular. >> reporter: to predict the future for redwoods and where and how toe protect them, scientists are climbing into the upper reaches of towering trees to learn how these giants have responded to climate changes in past centuries. the scientists are documenting the health of these trees today. revisiting them regularly to see how they respond to changing conditions. it's part of a long initiative being conducted by save the redwoods league and they need our help. >> we can't be in every location, but if we can get the public doing what they already do, going out and enjoying the redwoods and collecting data, that would be perfect. >>

several fire stations in santa cruz are sounding the alarm. this weekend one agency will be at its lowest level ever for the 4th of july weekend. lisa amin gulezian spoke to firefighters about the cutbacks and she joins us live from cap paw toe law. lisa? >> fire works are illegal in much of santa cruz county including here in capatolla, but not everyone follows the law, and that's why the emergency crews do extra patrols. but some can't afford them this year. fireworks are already on sale in some parts of the bay area. it is always a concern for the local fire department, especially on the 4th of july and they need to increase staffing. >> in general we usually would like to have an extra engine or two or three. >> but this year things will be different at central fire in santa cruz county which is responsible for so cal, live oak and capatolla. >> we have budget -- budget terry re-- restraint and so if there are a few of the fires going on, we can only grab one at a time. >> this year they are having their normal complement they would have o

they are david and dede haughton of santa cruz. they were killed in this crash. so were their sons, ryan and luke. they were on board of this plane that we're going to show you right here. this is where federal investigators are right now. they plan to be here for most of the afternoon to try to figure out how this crash happened. >> we're going to gather the factual information, clean up the site. >> nasaworkers from national transportation safety board are at the site. witnesses saw the plane nose dave towards the ground, shortly after it took off. it skidded across the pavement before it slammed into the side of a medical building. >> i turned and all i saw was the airplane hit. and the explosion was taller than the an again ya. >> santa cruz chef river deputies said two people onboard died. but overnight, more victims were discovered. there were four persons on board. that's all i can tell you. two adults, two children. >> reporter: a mother, father and two children were killed in the crash. an aunt told us that the family bought this plane about a year ago a
