we know that there was that red flag warning for those notorious santa ana winds in place leading upo the devastating fires there. can you talk about the unique weather conditions that have led to this fire event that we're seeing in southern california? >> well, as you mentioned, we have seen very strong offshore dry winds in southern california that have helped fuel the flames. but even more anomalous, if you will, is the extraordinary dryness of the landscape and of the climate leading up to this event in the weeks and months that preceded it. so this is the driest start to the rainy season now on record in southern california. following an unusually warm and dry period, really, since the spring across a good portion of the interior portion of california. and so it is that sequence of events, all of that antecedent dryness, the fact that it has not yet rained, that vegetation in southern california is extremely dry. that has allowed these seasonal offshore winds, which do tend to occur right around this time of year but usually occur after significant precipitation has fallen, whi

now, the santa ana winds will gusting once again through the usual santa ana corridors. you get those winds channeling through and heading toward the ocean from the dry inland. so it's very, very dry. and you know what? actually at 1607 inch in southern california. that ties the old record for las angeles set back in 62 to 63 for a very, very dry conditions at 1607 inch. and you know what this go around in 2025, it's 4.2 degrees. warmer. then it was some that not many years ago. so you know what? we have a lot drier conditions, dryer atmosphere, dry or tender. and that's a big concern. so the fight goes on in southern california and the surface smoke is heading away from us once again because those north-northeast winds push the smoke away from us and towards southern california and toward baja, mexico. and even out to sea drought monitor or yes, it is dry or a lot drier than it should be. we've got severe drought conditions, moderate to severe through parts of southern california. and the longer we wait to get rain, the more severe that drought will become for them. and

so another push of strong santa ana winds.re are fire watches and warnings in place for southern california over in ventura los angeles county. so let's take a look at the current conditions where we've been monitoring the 2 big fires of the ones that have been burning down there. this is the palisades fire on the west side. calm conditions there. and over on the east side and altadena that the ian fire same thing. so calm winds now. but that is expected to change and the areas shaded in red. that's that fire warning the red flag warning in here is the wind model. so notice the colors. this is midnight and take a look at what happens tomorrow morning in the afternoon. notice the purple and the reddit. we're talking 30 to 50 and even up to 70 miles per hour. wind gust in the highest elevations and the contours is just they just stick around from now and told wednesday. so tuesday and wednesday are the most dangerous days of that red flag warnings actually apds which is particularly dangerous situation and put things in perspect
