jocelyn is living in santa clara county. we have some big races that voters have their eyes on this morning in the south bay. >> reporter: yes . two of them are the san jose meares, and the santa clara county sheriff's race. we are in the part of the office where the balance will be processed. the workers are preparing those materials to get out to the vote centers. early voting has been underway for a few weeks. people have been able to mail in their ballots. if you have not voted, you have options. voting centers open at 7:00 a.m. there are plenty of those centers where you can go about. there are 100 vote centers. another option on the drop boxes that you can drop off the ballots that you received at home. there are more than 100 ballot drop boxes located throughout the county. in order to find them, you can visit the website. more than 100 locations for both centers and 100 locations for ballot drop boxes. you can vote at the main office here in santa clara county. you can go here as well. we are told about 30% of regist

missing ballots. >> reporter: well, there are still a lot of questions to be answered about those santa clara county ballots that were reportedly discovered down a ravine in the santa cruz mountains. now, the u.s. postal service in washington, d.c. says it is now investigating the case. one of the things that they'll probably want to look at is here, where some of the people who reported their ballots were lost, say they dropped their ballots off at this post office on payne avenue. you can see the lock has been taken out, punched out or something. we can't speculate on how the ballots were stolen. but the registrar of voters points out under their strict protocol, there would not be non-election material mixed in with the ballots as it looks like in the picture. they say that that could not happen. so somewhere it happened along the postal stream as far as they're speculating. the registrar also says that the post office says it will deliver the ballots back to them by this friday. but the deadline for accepting ballots to be counted is today. so the county counsel will examine the circumsta

cat: at the san jose santa clara wastewater facility, operator justin took us to an underground area where he and his colleagues took samples of semisolid waste, known as sludge, every four hours. >> we try to get 250 milliliters a sample roughly. cat: the samples are sent to a lab where they are tested not only for covid, but also influenza, rsv, or monkeypox, known as mpox in california. the results are sent to public officials around the country, including dr. sarah cody, the head of santa clara's public health department. >> what you really need to do is look at where are we now in the wastewater. cat: she now has more than two years worth of data showing how closely covid cases intercounty correlated with virus levels in the wastewater. then this summer, she says fewer people were tested at clinics and hospitals, but wastewater concentrations state high. >> when i see this, i see why over time we have had growing confidence that wastewater is the truth. now we can certainly see that wastewater levels are still elevated, and we trust that. we know the wastewater does not lie. cat
