in santa clara, robert honda, nbc, bay area news. well, parts of the united states bracing for dangerously cold temperatures this week. a blast of cold air from the arctic set to drop temperatures in the east and south. the national weather service says below freezing temperatures are possible as far south as florida and the gulf coast, and snow possible in southern plains states like kansas, louisiana and texas. wind chills could push temps below zero. the weather service says the cold spell could last until january 15th. and today we got our first real look at the sierra snow pack. it's important because many water agencies, they rely on the snow melt to fill our reservoirs. state water officials held the first survey of the year at the phillips station near south lake tahoe. there they go. gives us a snapshot of how much we might expect to fill our reservoirs when it melts. they took six samples and combined the numbers with 260 other sites around the state. and right now we are at 108%. but of course, still early in the season. a
