the red cross is stepping in to help the people who've been displaced. >> officials in santa clara county are seeing a dramatic spike in rsv covid-19 and influenza recently. county officials studied wastewater readings and found that rsv has doubled in the last week in both gilroy, palo alto and sunnyvale and in san jose are as we doubled in the last month, that county officials now urging everyone to get vaccinated this winter. they say when they see wastewater readings like this, they tend to later follow a wave of more people visiting emergency rooms. public health officials say rsv hospitalizations is just well in just the last 2 weeks are 3 times higher than they were in mid october. these illnesses typically start in november and continue through march and april. meantime, the federal government is making more covid-19 home test available for free covid-19. infections have been on the rise as well. but they have stabilized over the last few weeks. also, this will be the first winter since the start of the pandemic in which insurers will no longer be covering the cost of home tests.

moving you forward now this midday, cases of the respiratory illness, rs, are on the rise in santa clara countyalthough there is a vaccine available. santa clara county public health monitors rsv through wastewater and noticed a sharp increase in all county watersheds. in the last week, rates doubled in palo alto, sunny veil, and gilroy. for the first time, there is an rsv vaccine available, and anyone over the age of 60 who is at risk of serious illness is urged to get it. pregnant women between 32 and 36 weeks are also eligible. providers should have plenty of adult doses. while babies younger than 8 months are also eligible, their doses are harder to come by, which makes vaccines for moms even more critical. >> the vaccine that's give on the pregnant woman gives protection to the infant. so, that's a way to be still protecting that infant even though we're on short supply of the immunization that is available for them. >> it's too soon to tell how many people are vaccinated against rsv because it's so new, but the public health department reminds us all it's not too late to get covid booster
