reports now in the thousands of young people eager to make their vote count. >> workers at the santa clara county registrar's office have visited more than 80 high schools in the south bay this year, taking voter pre registration kits wherever they go. amidst the chaos of an election year, the santa clara county registrar's office has its eye on voters and future yeah, it's getting it's been busy all day of juan mendez and others in the office had been visiting high schools and encouraging 16 17 year-olds to pre-register to vote in future elections. the number of teens filling up their pre registration forms have skyrocketed. we had over 7,000 in the last few weeks. so in the entire year, of course, like once they turn 18, they're not on our list anymore. but >> in total, since start for the month, the for the year of 2024, we've had over 10,000. mendez says the forms take less than 5 minutes to complete and even have a qr code option. she doesn't just explain the current political issues and candidates to teens. >> but also gives examples they can understand when it comes to why voting matters.

concerns that the santa clara county office of education misused some federal funds, as well as complaintsf retaliation by staff. the board will now enter closed session in a42 vote, with one board member abstaining. santa clara county board of education trustees terminated superintendent mary ann dewan without cause. with nearly two years remaining on her contract. dewan and her cabinet sent this message to staff early thursday morning. it was a complete honor and privilege to serve santa clara county, its schools, community staff and students. i am incredibly proud of all we have done together. dewan will receive around $400,000 in severance pay, according to her contract. the big question why was she fired? board members are not providing an explanation, but comments at wednesday's board meeting point to widespread concern about dewan's leadership and handling of employee complaints, even if this means that i may have to endure retaliation being gaslit live and work in fear. for four years, i've advocated on behalf of my members who can't attend due to their other jobs or family commitm

now we reached out to the santa clara county office that would form a civil grand jury to investigate the board here. and we did not hear back but a similar civil grand jury investigation was done back in 2018 and it found significant issues within the board of education. one of the biggest recommendations which was not taken up by the board was to ensure that future superintendents are elected by the people of silicon valley, not appointed by the board reporting here in san jose jacmel. but kron 4 news. >> well, residents in san francisco is mission district are finally back home after they were evacuated because of a gas leak. police told kron 4 that a private contractor was doing some work at about 10 o'clock yesterday morning when they struck this gas line. gas was leaking at 24th in hampshire street and that cause businesses to close and 4 apartment buildings to have to evacuate. it wasn't until noon that the fire department gave the all clear for those residents to go back home. but several streets are still closed because pg e still working to fix those ruptured gas lines. in t
