we learned of new charges against muller in contra costa and santa clara counties. today, authorities revealed his crimes allegedly stretch as far back as 1993. our len ramirez is live in seaside where law enforcement and victims spoke out about the new charges against him. len? >> reporter: that's right, ryan. this is a very unusual case that brought together those so-called american crime victims from the netflix series together with law enforcement from around northern california to try to piece together a series of unsolved crimes that go back decades, all allegedly linked to one serial kidnapper. kidnap and sexual assault victim, denise huskins, and her falsely accused now husband, aaron, survived the american nightmare case, but it didn't end there. the couple's involvement in prompting law enforcement to reinvestigate denise's convicted kidnapper, matthew muller, has led to new charges against muller that go back decades and include previously unreported crimes that the victims kept secret out of fear. >> and so if you're in that situation, just know you shou

there are an estimated 10,394 homeless people living here in santa clara county, across the bay area the state as a whole. about two thirds of homeless residents live on the streets, while the rest stay in shelters in santa clara county. the number is up 5% compared to the last count back in 2023. no surprise whatsoever. that's probably even an undercount. there's been there's a consistent number of people that continually get priced out of san jose, and they end up on the streets. there was a lot of people who ended up getting evicted after covid, after the protections ended across much of the bay area. homelessness is on the rise in contra costa county. it increased by 20% compared to 2023. san mateo county saw a 15% increase, and the number of homeless in san francisco is up 10%. homeless advocates say drug and mental health challenges are also contributing to the problem, but there is some progress. in november, santa clara county announced it is now housing more homeless veterans with the help of targeted assistance. a new count of the unhoused is expected to take place in the b

here to the south bay, to milpitas, to the elmwood correctional facility, which is run by the santa clara county sheriff's office. stubblefield's attorneys were pleasantly surprised to hear that their client was back in the south bay when they were informed this morning by a judge inside the santa clara county superior courthouse behind me. that's because this is a big step towards a possible release from custody. this was the scene this morning inside department 23, where stubblefield's four attorneys spoke for several minutes off the record at the bench with the judge and assistant da before eventually going on the record. this morning's hearing to release was continued until january 17th for two reasons one, the prosecution needs more time to review the motion, which was just filed by the defense only two days ago, and two, the judge is not convinced his court has jurisdiction to decide on stubblefield's release until the court of appeals sends the case back to santa clara county, whwhere t case was originally tried. stubblefield's attorneys tell us they think this is a technicality they beli

two home invasions in santa clara county and a previously unreported 2015 home invasion and attempted kidnapping for ransom case in san ramon. the district attorney credited denise and aaron with keeping the investigation into muller alive. >> they were, after nine years, persistent that there was more to this case, that mr. matt muller committed more crimes and perhaps he worked with others in the commission of the crimes. >> reporter: he cross convicted of kidnapping and raping denise and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. investigators first suspected aaron and it in denise's disappearance. when she was found, accused the couple of staging the event. earlier this year, seaside police chief nick borges helped them facilitate training, writing letters to muller in prison, who wrote back, allegedly revealing more crimes. >> the letters, we never expected that it would lead to a lot with these new announcements. >> reporter: the new cases are under investigation. denise says she has been in contact with one of the latest revealed victims, a woman whose attempted kidnapping in san ram

that's very important for valley water, because about half of the water that we use here in santa clara county comes from outside of the county. so that snowpack is really part of our water supply here. right now, valley water says the south bay reservoirs are about 91% of the historical average. they're in good shape should strong winter storms arrive. we've got our wettest months now here in january and february, so we really are early in the season to see, you know, to give a definitive look at how we're doing locally. but because of the last two years and what we've seen and the rainfall we'vead in the past two years, things are looking pretty good. the data doesn't include the anderson reservoir because it's drained while the dam is being retrofitted to stand up to earthquakes. and overall, california's major reservoirs are 121% of average. but state water officials caution snow totals in january don't indicate how the winter will end. in recent water, years have shown how quickly conditions can change. on this date last year, california started slowly with a very dry fall. the statewide

stubblefield's attorneys were in court in santa clara county today. they're asking for his release after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned. as we reported to you last week, an appeals court found that a statement prosecutors made referencing stubblefield's race violated an anti-discrimination law. the defense team has also long maintained the judge blocked important evidence. there are some technical issues and some technical areas of law. this is an unusual case. the judge in this case allowed that the jury did not hear the truth. today's hearing was delayed because of some jurisdictional issues. stubblefield's release will be considered again now in two weeks time. the santa clara county da could also still decide to retry the case. we'll have to wait and see. right now, we'll move to the latest from new orleans. president biden and the first lady will travel to new orleans on monday to meet with grieving families. and that community so devastated by the new year's day terror attack. the fbi has revealed a new, detailed timeline of that attack

the minutes from now, santa clara county will swear in its first vietnamese american supervisor. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from a community celebration underway for this milestone moment. the swearing in of betty jung as the district two santa clara county supervisor launches a big year for the south bay's vietnamese american community, the largest group of its kind outside of vietnam itself. not only is jung the first vietnamese american county supervisor, but she takes office during the 50th anniversary of the fall of saigon. her family came here when the county declared itself as a refugee site in the 1970s. being born at the county hospital. growing up in county services, helping my family navigate those services as their family. as the family translator alongside my sisters, they did their part to being able to now not only serve at the county for the last decade, but then to be able to be the first supervisor. it is an opportunity to continue the work that has already been done. jung became a lawyer and a familiar face in the county, including spending time as a
