here's the rain in the santa cruz mountains. as it hits the mountains, it naturally rises, condenses and creates rain. as it sinks into the santa clara valley, it does the opposite. it dries, stabilizes. you can see as it hits the other side of the valley, it lifts again and more rain develops. that's going to be the case for you until we get later into the afternoon and evening hours. some of that play out as you head towards livermore. the farther north and closer to the coast, that's where the steader rain and heavier rain in the north bay. look at this fetch of moisture. plenty of moisture upstream. this low will drag the cold front through and bring us heavy rain tonight. it's also bringing heavy rain to the sierra. that's why the flood watch starts at 5:00 and goes through sunday at 11:00. 5 inches on top of the snowpack. the rain will melt the snowpack. we have a flood warning for the truckee river and for the carson river. these go all the way until sunday morning also. could be somdev station up there. you can see some m

so santa cruz, san rafael, seeing some moderate to heavy downpours. and if i zoom out, look at what is behind it. this is what our storm ranger is capturing. right here the line of showers and pockets of moderate to heavy downpour. off the coast, but eventually that will start to track in and as that does, you could see how that highlights those incoming cells moving to the bay area. so let me give you a time line as far as when that cell is expected to move in. by about 4:23, bodega bay will see heavy downpours and by 4:34, guerneville and then 4:44 windsor will see some downpours but if you have to be somewhere early, head out now because the roads get tricky. now to the traffic maps. i have the radar turned on for the traffic maps. the highlights green zeen is where it is raining or precipitation just passed. we're seeing light slowing along 280 but aside from that chp still reporting a quiet start to the morning. but you could already see the bay bridge, no lights yet but it is wet and raining. slow it down. hopefully no spinout this is morning. b

the santa cruz mountains also going to see a lot of rain. of this is hovering along that coastline and north of the golden gate bridge. so let's check in now with anne makovec. >>> reporter: it looks like your doppler is pretty accura, neda. you said there's a break coming to san francisco which means we're probably going to have a little bit of a break here, which is really good because it's been coming down steadily all night long, all morning long. nothing crazy. it's not a drenching rain but it has been very steady. that's the difficulty, because the roadway really has not had a chance to dry out and won't for many hours to come. now, here at the toll plaza, you can see most of the lanes, they are at a crawl, which is typical for this time of the morning with the busy morning commutes we have been seeing. so they are not able to go too fast. but earlier this morning, before things really jammed up traffic-wise, there were a lot of people that were driving too fast for conditions when it comes to all the water that's out there on the road

the santa cruz mountainsers san jose and santa clara counties it will be a little later versus sooner, effecting the drives tonight to saturday, when the rain will pick up to the south. it already picked up to the north. the flash flood watches are out in the burn area, mud slides and debris flows, adding 8 to 10 inches of rain. this goes through saturday at 11:00 a.m. that is a long haul. that is focused on morin county and sonoma county and parts of napa county. you can see the rain moving through. this is the deeper moisture getting its act together, finally coming through. there is a little help around the low level jet stream at 5,000 feet. you need that to get the juice going, get the lift. that is finally moving in and you can see it developing rapidly, a big time event for those to the north. you can see how it lifted a little bit, which is why if you are in the santa clara valley or santa cruz mountains you are not getting as much. a milder mass in place that will continue to be with us all day today. it lifts north then slowly drops south tonight. 60s on the temps. temperatu
