mary lee is in santa cruz.nna, over there across the studio, you will make sure we get there safely. we have a full team devoted to the coverage. >> absolutely. we have our live reporters in spots where flood warnings are in effect. since friday all throughout the bay area, we have been seeing heavy rainfall. current totals since friday, we have seen an inch and a half near san jose and los gatos, two inches near red wood city. the more north we went, the more impressive it got. as we zoom in to santa rosa, we passed three inches. into san francisco, close to an inch and a half as it still rains on us. we will keep you updated. let's dive into what it is looking like currently before we head out on our first alert doppler on this active weather day. showers are still falling throughout the santa clara valley, san jose, los gatos, stretching to the east bay we see moderate pockets of rain at times too. thunderstorm activity into the next hours especially as temperatures start to rise and we start to see instabil

other impressive totals in marin county along with santa cruz mountains. re, san anselmo and kentfield, both over five konocti over three. santa rosa over three. yountville two and a half and sonoma just shy of two. so one system has gone through, but we'll still get some off and on rain throughout the morning and probably afternoon before we get a break on tuesday. next system is on its way for wednesday. a lot of moisture streaming north where these are warm systems. uh, so the snow level goes up, but the water content is higher. not a lot of rain here through tuesday night. maybe another, you know, 10th of an inch to a quarter of an inch should probably cover it. but we're not. we're not dry. 50s on the temps. no 40s at all. so it's 50s. highs will be in the 60s. these are warmer systems. so it's mainly been rain at lake level. what does fall is snow is a heavy wet sierra cement. so the water content is good. that'll be nice. once we get to spring. i guess. if it's any consolation, plenty of moisture streaming up that'll lead to rain on wednesday and not

and the santa cruz mountains, which is being hammered at this hour with heavy precipitation check out castro valley. wow that's impressive. santa rosa, you're closing in on an inch of precipitation, but you have a bit of a break there. and there you have danville. now approaching three quarters of an inch as well. here is the front. it's now slicing through the sacramento valley and heading towards the greater lake tahoe area, where we already have some light snow on the fly. everybody has rain right now except that the north bay, because this system is void of the north bay at this time, as it's moving more towards the central valley, you can see that cell that just moved over the altamont pass producing a quarter of an inch of rain. we have moderate to heavy rainfall now around 680, lifting out of the milpitas area towards sunol and right there around the santa cruz mountains, santa cruz, capitola, scotts valley. heavy rain. this is moving out of portola valley and heading right towards palo alto, and you can see where the rain is falling around the san mateo bridge. and now we have

there's more rain falling right now down towards santa cruz as we speak, and santa cruz ben loman of about seven inches, and they got a majority of that overnight. so the rest of us anywhere from an inch and a half to 2in to 3in over the course of this entire storm. and does it feel like an el nino storm? you bet. this is classic el nino weather at this point. we've got very warm conditions, high snow levels, and or graphically favored areas getting the most rain i.e. santa cruz mountains and marin county up there where they saw most of the rain. they're going to back it up here a little bit. here's the live radar, but i want to show you we had some activity around morgan hill, just a little while ago. pull it in close this area here producing thunderstorms as it moves through. at this point, we are in this position where it has moved on to the south, but a widely scattered shower activity continues around the area. we're going to get a break to dry out, which is good because we kind of you could feel it. we kind of hit a tipping point, didn't we? especially in the north bay and the

to santa cruz where an apartment complex is flooded.mary lee reports from the scene, it is a few blocks west of the santa cruz boardwalk. >> reporter: it is a mess. you can see dirt and debris on the roadway. this is cypress point apartment complex in santa cruz. the good news, the water has receded but look at what it looked like earlier this morning. you can see several inches of water on felix street in santa cruz. the water is covering the roadway. i want to show you the reason why. behind this apartment complex, there is a creek that overflowed. heavy rain caused that creek to flood and that sent water into the apartment complex, and the street. we spoke to a resident who was checking her car to see if it worked and she also talked about her sister who skull was flooded at this apartment complex . take a listen. >> she came out at 3:00 in the morning to check on her car in the water was knee-high. her boyfriend got home from work, he works at the hospital. he said it is flooded really bad. check on your car. >> reporter: earlier th

santa cruz mountains.bout a half inch around aptos, socal and davenport as well, but some of the totals coming in the heaviest amounts have been in the higher elevations, you might imagine. and in the russian river. finally, some snow for the mountains and winter weather advisory goes until late tonight. it's been a foot around 5000 foot level and up. that's good news. there's more snow on the way, so breaks to the north. you know, there could be an isolated or what i call a rogue shower or two, but i think most of the drier air is beginning to spill in. give this system credit statewide from crescent city and eureka, all the way down to southern california, much needed, especially in the mountains. there will be a weak little system on friday. not a big deal then. saturday night, sunday is when the next system drops in. could be a bigger one next week from today. there's some hints of that. the forecast models want to get us a cold, cold pattern. we'll see if they hold on to that off and on. morning rain

the bomb appeared in the dunes just a few miles south of santa cruz yesterday morning, santa cruz countyheriff's office had to call in the bomb squad as a precaution. the team determined the bomb was not active and they were able to safely remove it from the beach. officials say the bomb likely washed up as a result of last week's storms and all those big swells. we saw pretty interesting. the main street ferry terminal in alameda has reopened this week following more than 2 months of renovations. the project took more than 3 years of planning and was completed on time. officials say the ferry terminals, infrastructure was repaired and replaced to comply with earthquake safety requirements. >> we installed the new pile at the end of the new bridge. new gain weight. >> and a new model pile in the corner so we're no longer resting on much more seismic. please sound. the terminal be very resilient event of an when we need to potentially use this facility to respond. >> the project was expected to cost 10 million dollars, but crews were able to get the job done under budget. well, you never

a few miles southeast of santa cruz.s morning, officials called in a bomb squad as precaution when the team determined the bomb was not active and then safely removed it from the beach. the sheriff's office says the bomb likely washed up as a result of last week's storms, and big swell. >> a federal judge threw out a lawsuit from a man who said he has a constitutional right to live on his boat in richardson bay in marin county. according to the marin independent journal, the man who filed the lawsuit argued that the richardson bay regional authority did not have the legal right to tell him that he can't anchor his boat in richardson bay. a law bans boaters from anchoring for longer than 72 hours in the bay, and the agency has been removing anyone who is illegally anchored there. the judge said the lawsuit had no merit. >> a public meeting is scheduled for next week to discuss removing an aging bridge over san anselmo creek in marin county. removal of the concrete bridge is expected to reduce the flooding threat to about

jesse gary live for us there in santa cruz. jesse. thank you. >> all right. we move now to the situation on the peninsula and heavy rain and wind brought down a 100 foot tall oak tree that crashed right onto two cars overnight. our crews were out for most of the morning, removing that tree on fourth avenue at el camino real in san mateo. thankfully no one was hurt here. tree specialist says the oak was in good shape, but it was no match for the wind and the rain. people who lived nearby say they heard it come crashing down. >> they woke me up sometime around three in the morning. um i heard metal, metal being sounded like metal falling. >> got woken up by by the police at about, um, 4 a.m. and they came knocking on our door and we came out and saw the trees and, um. yeah. so that's it. so crazy. i'm just glad nobody got hurt on fourth avenue was shut down for several hours while tree removal crews were there at that scene. >> it is now back open to traffic this afternoon. >> and remember that you can always stay on top of the storm with the ktvu weather app.

we do have flood warnings up in the santa cruz mountains. ller streams running up to the redwoods on those slopes. definitely swollen this morning. and then we also have the russian river right around santa rosa on up towards guerneville. a flood warning up there. we do have reports of water rising above flood stage and some localized flooding around guerneville and monte rio where were sitting currently on satellite and radar. we do have a brief lull in rainfall for a lot of spots. we will see spotty showers through the rest of the day, though. so just because it might not be actively raining where you're at no guarantee it stays that way are most active area in the bay right now is definitely the south bay. if you're traveling 6.80, from sunol on down through milpitas eventually to san jose. we've got some spots of heavy rain around there, both 5.81. 0, 1, as well as 2.80. moving on into the peninsula are also looking very wet this morning. pockets of heavy rainfall currently right around sonny bill, los altos moving down towards santa clar

city of santa cruz itself. then the russian river also overflowing its banks right on to rio and guerneville. that's a flood warning up there as well. so a lot going on out there. multiple days of rainfall will do that. and we're certainly not done with the rain just yet. we're still seeing active showers moving into san francisco in marin county. and in there, some moderate to even heavy pockets of rain right in the middle of the morning commute. so if you're heading into san francisco right now, be wary of those increase showers in some standing water possible on roads. little calmer for the south bay right now, although from san leandro, as you head over, i've 80 towards the tri valley, you're actively seeing some showers right around dublin and livermore. now we will be seeing spotty showers remaining through the remainder of the day and this afternoon amid some peeks of sunshine, interspersed by some dark clouds in especially for the inland east bay, a chance of isolated thunderstorm development. here's 05

we had some showers up in the santa cruz mountains.raveling highway 17, watch for a few slick spots on those minding winding mountain roads up in the santa cruz mountains. temperatures are currently in the 40's to 50's. it is a cool start to this day but not quite as cool as yesterday. you'll notice we don't have something on this map that we did yesterday morning. no 30's out there. so nobody in novato at 46 degrees. it's a little warmer than yesterday was berkeley and oakland beach right at 50 degrees later on today. daytime highs will reach into the low 60's for the last time in this forecast. so if you like some 60's now be talking are cooler and wetter weather.h still to come. as for your roads, what we haee out there is a pretty easy commute so far. nothing slowing you down along the bay bridge tenure along the san mateo bridge. although your traffic is increasing on this span. as for other bridges, the richmond center fell and the golden gate free of anything close to a backup this friday morning rain. all right. on the eve of t

you have rain coming your way because it's pouring in the santa cruz mountains.tts valley is getting its fair share. precipitation. look at this line that has developed along the peninsula for now. and this is just skirting to the south of redwood city, inundating the stanford and palo alto area, as well as east palo alto, south san francisco. you have light to moderate rainfall, but in the city, a little bit of a break right there near the sunset district. but you have more rain coming as well. so this area of low pressure has some cooler air associated with it. so by the time it passes through the bay area, our temperatures are going to drop and we'll see up to 2.5in of rain fall in the coastal mountains of the north bay. a couple of inches easily. and the santa cruz mountain areas and all this energy associated with this area of low pressure, it's generate the surf. and we have yet another high surf that goes into place overnight tomorrow morning, up to 19 foot waves. live weather camera looking out towards a very wet golden gate bridge. i wish you could see t

already moderate activity from santa cruz into parts of the subbasin up into palo alto. we see the rain and it will continue as we go into tonight so don't let your guard down even if you see a chance of a clearing. we are tracking more rain, especially in the overnight hours and be prepared for it. right there through the county and through the santa cruz mountains and it will be gusty so prepare for situations like this with brief breaks of the rain and another break right there on sunday morning to gather yourself and get ready for another round of rain. we will tap into an atmospheric river action as we line up at 6:00 tomorrow evening with heavier rain that could lead to more additional rain totals and the possibility of gusty winds. it will continue on into monday morning so it could be a good time to make alternate plans for school, work because as we start to take the models forward, we see right now through late sunday into early monday, rain totals right now about .25 to .5 inch and we paint on more contours into monday's storm and right there we see the bull's

strongest winds coming in across the santa cruz mountains.we go to that same timeframe and zoom in, we are looking at 50 miles per hour gusts off the coast here and that is taking us through the afternoon and evening. you will see that the strongest winds will pass by the time we get into early thursday but that high wind warning goes until 4:00 in the morning on thursday. it starts at 4:00 in the morning tomorrow in the focus for the worst of the wind will be in the santa cruz mountains. this is the only place in the bay that has a high wind warning. everyone else has a wind advisory. there might be some debris on roadways but a high wind warning is like to degrees of importance above that for the santa cruz mountains. this is the wording from the national weather service. there are going to be downed trees, they were going to be widespread power outages in the santa cruz mountains. that has quickly become the focus. there is another one coming after this. let's go to the 7-day forecast. you can see wednesday, there is a chance of isolated t

richard thornton died thursday morning at the hook in santa cruz. about to go surfing. >> he was following his buddy down the steps and his buddy jumped in the water, looked up for richard and richard was just standing there kind of at peace, not clutching his heart or anything, and then he just collapsed into the water. >> his brother mark spoke to him the day before he passed. he says richard was excited to serve some of the big waves. while his exact cause of death is unknown, richard battled multiple myeloma. his family says the cancer wouldn't stop him from surfing since childhood . the water was richard's best friend. he grew up with rob and greg warner, who say richard was always either at the pool or at the beach. >> i remember him telling me in between meets or after meets and after the season we're like, let's go surfing. he was an anchor. he you knew you were going to get a great performance out of him, and you knew if you were going to beat him, you had to be pretty good. >> richard's father, naught, was the longtime coach of the cal swi

ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters has more now from tonight's vigil on sunday afternoon at santa cruz harbor, dozens of people gathered to remember 61 year old alice alex herman of capitola capital. >> police announced last week that they discovered herman's body in tilden regional park in berkeley. she had been missing since december 3rd. herman's boyfriend, 54 year old theobald lengyel, has been arrested in connection with her death. >> we're heartbroken and it's there's definitely a big hole in the community now in our club. >> a neuroscientist with a degree from caltech and fluent in french, herman was also a member of outrigger santa cruz, a canoe paddling club for people of all ages. she started competing as a club member in 2018. when i was going to see her the next weekend and, um, i when she didn't show up, i kind of texted and i'm like, hey, you know, missed you. >> and it's just usually not like her to not respond. and i, i was devastated. we've been, um, we became friends like sisters to begin the candlelight vigil. >> people carried this canoe from the dock to the parking
