watch the wind as it funnels around the santa cruz mountains up through the santa clara valley.'s never really a wide open path for those low level winds to get a long runway, but in the central valley there is, almost 1,000 miles long, couple hundred miles wide at its widest and that does under these situations allow a strong southerly wind, which is what's happening today down at lower levels, at the same time as this very powerful storm is sitting off the coast. it's throwing very fast winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere at a total different direction. now you've got something in the atmosphere called wind shear where the atmosphere is getting kind of torn. to

we will check back with you in the santa cruz mountains. the storm took the life of a man in boulder creek after a tree fell on a home along highway nine. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey spoke with a neighbor and joins us live with the latest tonight. dustin >> anna, you know these trees just like these here in the santa cruz mountains are what makes it so beautiful. but when storms hit like the one this past weekend, they can be incredibly dangerous. the county tells us that more than 1000 trees came down through throughout the mountains, including in boulder creek, where one came crashing down on 45 year old robert brainard, and he sadly died. a soft rain falls during a solemn day in boulder creek. one person is dead after a massive tree came crashing down onto this house just off of highway nine. chris louth saw it all happen from his house across the street, right across all these. >> it was like one of these bad boys. why? and we could see just like from over here, it went boom, boom, boom, just came down . >> the damag

santa cruz county officials opening two shelters in santa cruz and watsonville for some of the roughly unhoused residents here, spokesman jason hoppin says while rainfall totals are trending down, even strong winds will likely cause the most damage. >> the winds are probably going to be as much of a factor as the rain. we're going to get gusts up to 70 miles an hour even more in some of the higher elevations, with the ground already saturated, that's going to take down trees. trees are going to take down power lines and communication lines. so we're going to see outages. i would expect travel is going to be difficult into the evening. >> pga managers have pre-positioned equipment and personnel to respond more quickly to possible outages. right now, officials say there are 127 outages in the four county area of the south bay. that's santa clara, santa cruz, monterey and san benito counties. 127 outages as of now. but of course, that number could go up or down. residents living in flood prone areas are urged to prepare for the worst. and we'll end with this. officials say if you don't ha

live at the summit in santa cruz. i'm alice wurtz, ktvu fox two news. >> safe drive home for you, too. thank you, alice, for that report tonight. indeed. there are a lot of trees down all over the bay area in santa rosa. a redwood came down onto an suv on 101. this was 730 this morning in the northbound lanes at todd road, santa rosa. firefighters were able to get the driver out of that vehicle. he was transported to a hospital. the extent of his injuries not released. further. west in sonoma county, a large tree toppled over onto two homes. this is in bodega bay. it happened about 830 this morning. no injuries reported. the sonoma county fire district, sharing these photos on social media. the department says it continues to receive reports of hazardous conditions due to the storm. and in the east bay, a tree came down just missing a house in a neighborhood in el sobrante. the tree hit power lines on rancho road, which then knocked out power to the neighboring homes. firefighters cut up the tree, moved it out of the

getting drenched all day down in the santa clara valley below san jose toward gilroy and over in the santa cruz mountains. still heavy rain and gusty wind. right now we have gusts almost 60mph at sfo, right now, 35mph at san jose. oakland, 45mph, 55 at santa rosa. pretty windy all around the bay area this is a level four storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale for the remainder of this evening. we expect more downpours and possibly more flooding. strong damaging winds could produce more downed trees and power outages, and we go with the forecast animation starting at 630. notice between 630 and about 8:00. we still see isolated areas of downpours and strong cells moving through the bay area. not concentrated blanket of rain, but still heavy rain where it's raining up until about midnight after midnight. we'll see the storm weakening just a bit going into the early morning hours. it will still be a significant storm for the morning commute, though, and we of course still have a flood watch in effect for all of the bay area through tomorrow morning. we still have wind advisories and h
