santa cruz wharf remains closed. this is after large waves caused a section of that pier to break off. nbc bay area's bob redell live for us this midday. okay, so, bob, i understand you spoke with the city of santa cruz earlier this morning. what are they saying is going to happen next here? well, that is a big question. good morning to you, marcus. in about an hour at noon, the city of santa cruz is going to hold a virtual media roundtable with us to discuss what the next steps are for that out there. you're going to take a look out there if you can see through the fog and the spill that we've got here, that is the santa cruz wharf, for instance. the big question is when is it going to reopen and what needs to be done to make it safe. now the wharf, which once was and still might be the world's longest wooden wharf in the western hemisphere, obviously shut down right now, but it is home to around 20 businesses, which represent about 10% of santa cruz's restaurant economy, according to the city, which is why the city

so anybody along santa cruz mountains are on the coast through santa cruz county and you saw somethingnational weather service no. we are looking at six hours. i cannot stress this enough in light of the fact we had two tornado warnings. one before 6:00 a.m. and then the one that happened around 1:00 in the afternoon near the santa cruz mountains. in light of hearing all of that, what is most important is right now watch the last several hours. there is no more threat. no more concern at all to be able to produce anything else in the bay area. but just a quick look. how did this thing even do that? so rare this thing even happens here. spring and fall would be the more likely times to have this happen in northern california in general. the one confirmed tornado we do have in san francisco in 2005 was in the spring. most of the tomatoes happen in the central valley. and they do happen here. they are not unheard of. this is a winter storm. so, in order to do that, it got a major assist. can't see that on the regular satellite. but when you look at this storm and the water vapor, you see

meantime, the santa cruz wharf is closed until further notice. in santa cruz county. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. all right, jocelyn, thank you. let's bring in meteorologist vianey arana. she is tracking the big waves and strong swells, but also vianey some christmas eve rain. yeah, we've got an incoming line of heavy activity into the early morning hours tomorrow. but i do want to show you some current wave heights. now, these are boys that are bringing in data every other minute. and you can see here we've still got some 22 foot wave heights through parts of santa cruz, right near that area where that failure happened. we've got about 18 foot waves near san francisco and up through parts of the north bay, still at about 14ft. this high surf warning will be in place until tomorrow evening. that means that we're still going to see the possibility of those really tall waves. but also notice we've got a coastal flood advisory in effect as well, which means localized flooding along the coast is sll a threat. as we inch into that tuesday afternoon forecast. here's w

. >>> we start with breaking news out of santa cruz county as the storm turned deadly. a man is dead after a large wave trapped him under debris at sunset state beach. the first responders found the man at 11:30 this morning. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. officials say it was probably caused by the stormy weather. not related to the wharf collapse in santa cruz, it is 50 miles down the coast from there, west of watsonville. we have seen this storm system wreak havoc across the region. in napa, a treetopelled on a power line, knocking out power to people this morning for five hours. down in santa cruz the end of the wharf collapsed into the ocean. no one was hurt there. just under scores the dangerous weather conditions just two days before christmas and the start of hanukkah. zoe has been tracking this one for us. we knew it was coming but it caused problems. >> yeah, i mean, the fact that the high surf warnings have the waves potentially 60 feet that is nothing to laugh about, nothing to joke about. it is definitely stay away from the oceans if you can, again
