looks, peninsula, santa cruz, santa cruz mountains, you can see boulder creek.might even be lifting a little bit more towards over, spilling over into the peninsula. but you get this southwest wind, roaring southwest wind about 5000ft. that gives you a strong upslope. you take this deep moisture. now you start adding cold air to the mix, and you can wring out some pretty good rainfall totals here. the cold air will play into our weekend forecast as well, because it's going to be really cold in the morning. but it's all about rain today and thursday with snow in the mountains. winter storm warning is already out, snow level dropping 5500ft. maybe even lower than that by tonight into tomorrow. and again, we need the rain. they need the snow. and guess what? they're going to get the snow, especially as we head into friday. if you want to make plans for the weekend, i'd say go should be great. you can blame it on the rain here. maybe a slight break here, but then heavy rain and colder air move in later this afternoon. but it's off and on. morning rain, 50s to low 60

right now, a view on our storm ranger shows scattered areas of rain, including around the santa cruz mountains, but not much rain in san jose. this is the santa clara valley rain shadow effect underway where you got rising air over here on the west side of the santa cruz mountains. as the air comes up, rain falls on that side. then as the air drops down towards san jose, it tends to dry out. that's the reason why we've had about three inches of rain around ben lomond, but almost nothing in san jose. this particular upper air pattern is not good for producing a lot of rain around the south bay, but that is about to change big time tomorrow night into tuesday as a strong front passes through. we're talking wind gusts up to 45mph and potentially some heavy rain at times. san francisco southward. as we head into tuesday, we'll have a closer look at this storm, hour by hour and a colder storm on the way that could bring snow levels down to the higher peaks of the bay area later this week. coming up in just a few minutes. all right, rob, thanks. and you can track the next round of rain rob

you can see, you know, is we cut into the santa cruz mountains. that's really where some of these heavier showers have been falling. still and we'll continue to through the south bay and the kind of working their way out as we go through the afternoon. so that has caused some concern here. and you can see we do have a flood advisory until one 45 pm right now in around parts of the peninsula down your silicon valley. so, you know, it doesn't mean that we're totally done yet, but we're awfully close, everybody. so just be careful. we also have that flood advisory in place for some of our creeks and streams that are up in the north bay in and around santa rosa. and that goes until midnight on a saturday. so that is because they are still waiting for some of those to kind of dropped down and and get those levels back down to a good place. but for the most part, the bulk of this is gone by. we are now just kind of wrapping it up. as i mentioned, wind is calm and that will stay that way as we go through today. and just a quick look here at temperatures

the weather service sent out a message saying there was a radar indicated thunderstorm over the santa cruz area heading towards the santa clara valley. so as we get you into street level radar, you will notice that we are seeing some pockets of moderate to heavy rain right around evergreen uh- alum rock area. watch out, there will be some flooding on the roadways like we've been seeing. this storm has done a lot of damage across 580 altamont pass. we're seeing those downpours as well. but when you look at kind of the wider perspective, getting a break from santa rosa towards san francisco, not much in the way of the action. you've seen your share, though, as we take you back in time. this storm has soaked the bay area. wind gusts. big rock ridge 88 miles an hour earlier today, pine mountain up in marin county, 90 mile an hour winds. so yeah, it has done some damage. you can see the storm reports 131. unfortunately, one injury being reported. it's been flooding, wind damage, debris flows. and as we look at live doppler seven, this is a level three storm for another couple of hours as that a

. 543 tonight and the south bay, you're getting slammed very, very heavy rainfall here over the santa cruz mountains, also moving off toward the north and the east. this is going to keep you with those heavy downpours. campbell, santa clara, san jose, all the way through 530 tonight and then off here to the east bay. it's a nasty commute on 24, six, 88, 80 and then also back here towards 580. very slick and slow. now we do have some flood concern with us tonight. i really think the top areas are up here towards the north bay with this flood warning around healdsburg, windsor and santa rosa. that's because a lot of the creeks, streams and rivers are running very high and fast, could be overflowing their banks and sending some water onto the roads. and then we also have a flood warning here in guerneville. that's for the russian river. this goes until 9 p.m. on friday, and that's because of the water and h how gh it is going. we can show you right now this is continuing to rise. likely now gets to flood stage here by 7 a.m. wednesday at 32.87ft. so we are expecting the storm system to gradua

another area that we've been keeping a close eye on as well is the santa cruz mountains. as you know, highway 17 can quickly turn dangerous. and as we see this line of showers still moving through, that is definitely an area that we're going to monitor closely. now, in addition to our local rain, we're also, of course, monitoring what's going on out in the sierra. we've got winter storm warnings in place, definitely not recommending any sort of travel to the sierra right now. that window of opportunity might come as soon as tomorrow, but i think your best bet would be the weekend. but before we get to that, i do want to check in with our own rob mayeda, who's been keeping a close eye on the watches and the wind. yeah, still in the middle of the flood watches bay area wide, as you did see during the day, as much as five inches of rain fell in san rafael and in the santa cruz mountains, now near ben lomond, we're approaching five inches. so these are the areas we're going to watch through 4 a.m. but this area in red at the top of the newscast, you saw that home in the mudsl

however, flooding concerns down in the central coast and heavy rain expected within the santa cruz mountainsnd the santa lucia range. we are here in the north bay closely watching what's happening here on the ground. so far not so bad, marcus and laura. but if you are headed into the city, into san francisco, from the north bay or parts of the north bay, and you're planning on taking the ferry, go. you want to go ahead and check those times, because some of the afternoon ferry times have been adjusted. today we'll bring you more as our news in the later hour of our newscast. but for now, we're live in santa rosa, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. a good reminder there about that ferry. thank you. ginger. yeah, i think everybody's got to add a little bit more time because this storm is really going to pack a punch. and it seems like it's been a while since we've had a decent amount of rainfall, but we're not expecting this to have a really lasting effect. maybe some puddles and some street flooding, but it's been so long since we had some rain that a lot of this is just soaking right in

closer to the santa cruz mountains, 6 to 7 inches and that will be the name of the game since friday. and these rainfall totals will continue to get higher for us as they are not done yet as you could see on the window behind us, it is still raining there in san francisco. over three inches of rain has fallen since friday. but how much has fallen in the past 24 hours? it is quite a lot. and take a look at that. again, we've seen over two inches of rain here in san francisco in just the past 24 hours. and hopefully you could get a better view of these numbers because they're impressive. these are 24-hour rainfall totals. san francisco, over two inches of rain and also over two inches of rain. san rafael, over three inches of rain. again in the past 24 hours, that's a very good amount, and that is the reason why we saw so much flooding that saw those amounts in just 24 hours. that's because they only saw half of an inch to upwards of maybe a quarter of an inch, depending on where you are located. they saw a little over a quarter of an inch, and it depends on where you're located. i want

so we've had a few light showers along the peninsula and down in the santa cruz mountains, but those are the stragglers and they're all ending now. it's time to start looking ahead. let's say good-bye to the big picture view and get back over to the bay and go right to the details of what is coming our way the next three mornings. let's bring back up the map for us here at home to show you what the rain looks like on here. there are a few spotty showers. if we put the last hour of radar on here, especially along the peninsula and down into the santa cruz mountains, that stuff is going away. in fact, you can watch the last hour as it pretty much dissipates. so we're not focused on rain until next wednesday. between now and then and like every day between now and then, the real story is going to be how cold it is about to get. when we start coloring in the map for where the national weather service has put out the freeze warning, that's the areas up here in light blue. this starts tomorrow and goes through wednesday. everybody else has a frost advisory. you look at the rest of the bay.

updated the very latest rainfall totals for today alone, approaching two inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. look at la honda approaching an inch and a quarter. santa rosa over an inch. same in kentfield. los gatos. that's impressive. and orinda, now approaching three quarters of an inch of rain. brentwood getting into the mix. and san jose tonight at over 3/10 of an inch of rain. in addition to this, on the other side of the coin here, we've had some very gusty winds. check out the santa cruz mountains, mount vernon at 85 mile per hour winds, and fairfield coming in at 37 mile per hour wind gusts. and we will continue to see and feel these winds throughout the overnight hours. this is a very strong warm front. it's lifting from the pacific ocean in a north and northeasterly direction as we cue in on the bay area. you see the hit and miss scattered rain showers in the north bay, also the eastern portion of the bay area. to give you an idea of where it's all coming from. again, it's lifting and scraping across the eastern portion of our bay area and heading towards the sacramento v

santa rosa over three inches scotts valley, the santa cruz mountains over two inches. san francisco about 2.5in of rainfall. and here is that active radar you can see here in the bay area. now, we have been watching a thunderstorm, as you can see, near daly city. and we have been seeing some thunderstorm warnings issued. in fact, looks like this is the latest one was supposed to expire at 4:00 this afternoon. it looks like this has been extended until 415. so this includes san francisco and south san francisco for these areas here. as we come in closer. to give you a better idea of the warning here, closer to pacifica as well. montara. so we still have some intense downpours. the possibility of some very strong winds linked up with those thunderstorms. winds could be gusting to over 60 miles an hour. and we also have this special marine warning. there is the chance we could have waterspouts offshore. so that's a special marine warning has been extended until 415 this afternoon. checking out the radar imagery right now. first we'll show you all the flood advisories. and

this is in santa cruz mountains. eight roads closed between sanborn and redwood gulch roads. the closure started yesterday. not only are crews there cleaning away all of the mess, but they're also monitoring the hillside to determine if that slide is stable. highway nine is scheduled to fully reopen. it was at 6:00 this morning, but that weather likely impacting the progress there. luckily, we have a clear day today. a lot of people need it, but we've got another storm lining up. we do, and it's going to be in and out of here as we go toward early tomorrow morning and into the afternoon. a look at the flood concerns that still continue for the russian river at guerneville. that area shaded in red, are the areas dealing with the flood warning that will be in effect until tomorrow morning, when we are expected to be in the clear with those high water levels that do continue. but we have seen the rising water levels causing a lot of issues in the north bay, and part of that was because they had so much rainfall. but looking at the forecast for tomorrow, we are now at the peak at

venado, the santa cruz mountains.peaking of mountains, look at this beautiful view from the sierra. there is snow on the ground there, picking up the snow at the higher elevations as we look at live doppler seven and it is raining at some of the lower elevations. a winter storm warning until noon tomorrow above 5000ft. up to two feet of snow expected for the peaks i would hold off on travel. temperatures right now 40 to 60s. here's a look at the storm impact scale. it's a level two moderate strength storm through tonight. showers with those brief downpours, gusty winds, still a slight chance of thunder and minor urban flooding will continue. we've already seen that on the roadways with ponding and some of those smaller streams and creeks. 7:00 tonight, scattered showers, 9 p.m. you will notice a line of rain moving through. and then at 530 tomorrow morning, might see a brief downpour on the peninsula in the mount hamilton area. i wouldn't be surprised if a few snowflakes are mixing in with the rain, as it is going to

with over a foot of rainfall across parts of our north bay communities, nearly a foot across the santa cruzntains, and in san francisco we saw one of our rainiest days ever last week but again we are finally getting a break in the activity, you will notice in the distance, quite a lot of cloud coverage. that will be heading our way by mid next week and bringing us more rain. >>> there are many school districts across the bay area that are having to make tough decisions because of the same challenge, declining enrollments and grants drying out causing a budget crunch, west contra costa unified became the largest district to have to make painful cuts, this district serves more than 25,000 students across more than 50 schools from hercules to el cerrito. enrollment has been dropping for years. the districts board just approved the plan to trim more than $13 million over the next two years in the hopes of financially staying afloat. to make this math work, that means laying off teachers and staff, so da lin is in richmond where he heard from students and teachers who say they are worried about
