the concern any rain my trigger mudslides in the santa cruz mountains. we are live at the summit with a close look at the concerns. damian? >> reporter: janelle, the howling winds haven't arrived up here on the summit of the santa cruz mountains but when they do, some more down trees are a possibility. we saw plenty of those along our trip up here in the mountains and when the rains come, it could also mean for road washouts. there are countless road washouts along bear creek road in the santa cruz mountains. this one is near bolder creek. a temporary stoplight now directs traffic around the slide, but no timetable for crews to begin repairs. >> we deal with it. fortunately i'm close enough that i could walk to work. >> reporter: the big slide is still on skyline boulevard near black road. the road gave way in mid-february. and crews haven't begun the repair work. one problem is getting heavy earth movers through the narrow roads leading up to the slide. at 3000 feet, the wind bends a tall trees and some in danger of toppling on to the eroding mountainsid

also the santa cruz mountains. i think that everything is in ploom, if we get big wind gusts, that's going to cause some issues, there are wind advisory and a high wind warning. the wind is picking up for many already. the warning goes through tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. the wind wind advisory -- wind advisory goes through 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. bands of moisture are moving onshore. you can see each and every san jose and redwood city, there is a bit of rain moving in. for other areas, the rain started early. for some areas it's going to start late. some of the rain is extending towards monterey and big sur. this is a smaller system. the wind is picking up but watch how this system develops. that's very intense, the best news is that it will move quickly but until it does, they are heavy rainfall rates. some flooding could occur. the pressure gradient between central california and northern california is getting really big, 4 feet of snow are expected in the sierras. if this stalls out, you can get 5 feet. rain and

the heavier presip will be saturday towards santa cruz mountains. a lot of that fog and low cloud deck in there and we are looking at cool conditions speaking of the santa cruz mountains. wet, cool, calm, 50 degrees. a steady 24-hour drizzle. a steady drizzle produced 3/4" up at occidental. then it lets up. there's still light drizzle just underneath that. some deeper moisture beginning to move on shore. this is associated with another system that's enhancing a little bit to the west southwest. that looks to be about the focus here. north of that there's more of a low cloud deck. so you probably bl get a few breaks in that. to the south no way. there's going to be a lot of cloud cover. some steady rain. maybe even some moderate rain and you see some of those moving in to the monterey peninsula. that looks to be the area where it's going to take the most of it. we'll be just to the south of santa cruz. 50s on the temps. low to mid. there's really not much of a change here. livermore's 52. 34 up in truckee. last check it was our off and on rain. there

in the santa cruz mountains rob fladeboe kron 4 news chief meteorologist brittney shipp joins us now. seasonably cool temperatures will persist into wednesday as a weak system passes inland to the north. this will result in a slight chance of light precipitation, mainly from the santa cruz mountains northward into wednesday. a warming and drying trend will then get underway beginning thursday and likely continuing into the upcoming weekend as high pressure builds over the eastern pacific. breezy northerly winds are also possible from thursday into friday, especially in the hills. ( steve ) a rather strange police chase... involving a rental truck and a driver who was in no hurry to getaway. the move by the suspect at the end that wound up with him getting arrested. (steve) it was an out of the ordinary police chase in los angeles today... when a man in a stolen semi-truck evaded police at extrememly low speeds. (pam) the man allegely stole a rental truck and then began a low speed chase through central san fernando valley.. for more than an hour. he was driving so slow that an officer

santa cruz mountains, maybe where you are.oggy, drizzly and ben is -- an inch of rain now. i am hearing unofficially. i haven't seen anything official yet, but there is a weather rain for them. the weather is between 95 and 100 inches of rain. oxidental may have more than that. cal, 3/4; napa, a half inch; san francisco, .4. and that is our observer. san jose, a quarter of an inch and oakland, a quarter of an inch. michaeled the same thing to me in an e-mail. you get this from the southwest. the radar beam goes over it and keeps clicking along and clicking along. that is what we have. beginning to pick off much of the coast as well and some deeper moisture works in and some of this could add another half an inch to an inch of rain the next 24 hours and looks like it's steady here. parts of the mendocino coast and county into wake county. northern sonoma county. santa rosa, north toward cloverdale and over to clear lake and lakeport. again, it keeps going and going. the santa cruz mountains is picking up there as well. the good

but we have some light showers now over the santa cruz mountains.his is our satellite-radar you see that we have the departure of yesterday disturbance. we have a weak secondary system coming in. this front will be here tonight bringing brief heavy downpours and blustery winds in excess of 30-mile-per-hour gusts and this is the core of the center of the area of low pressure impacting our thursday. futurecast this is your afternoon cloudy and drizzly. then upstream right there, between about 8 and 11 p.m. we'll have the passage of the front brief heavy downpours and there's the core that will impact your morning commute tomorrow with scattered light rain and clearing out in the afternoon. by the time it's over since it is so fast moving, only about a quarter inch of rain throughout the metropolitan areas. about a half inch towards the santa rosa area and upstream we go towards ukiah approaching a full inch of rain. so what does this mean for the greater lake tahoe area? we still have spring break goinand we have ourselves some rain showers today, muc
