and what we heard from the police chief of santa monica is that there are two narratives happening. there are two protests that are happening, and not just in santa monica, but something that we are seeing in other parts, including long beach here. overwhelmingly, the narrative has been that people have been gathering to peacefully protest, to bring up these issues, to talk about the death of george floyd. but there has been a percentage, and what protes tos here in long beach told me is that it's been a small percentage of people who have not been here to protest, but to try to take advantage of these protests and use it as a cover in order to steal and cause mayhem. so, that's what we saw in santa monica, there was some looting here, michael and natalie, in long beach, but again, these protesters told me that they did not believe that it was the group that had gathered here to protest police brutality. michael, natalie? >> yes, and kyung, earlier, you talked with a young woman who was leading the chant and you talked about the difference between the looters and the peaceful protes

the city of santa monica, most of the county under a 6:00 p.m. curfew. santa monica went to a 4:00 p.m. curfew. if you move east from where we are. beverly hills, they enacted a 1:00 p.m. curfew in the business district and a 4:00 p.m. curfew for the rest of the city. it does appear santa monica was caught off guard a little bit by this because i don't know if they thought the march would stay peaceful which most of the people involved in the march did. but there are different factions that come out and try to loot and cause destruction and graffiti and that's what happened throughout santa a -- a monica. rick: the national guard heading to philadelphia as city-wide looting and riots begin there. the city of brotherly love. you see numerous police vehicles being damaged. reporter: there is a group of residents who live in this area. they have blocked the front of this target store to prevent it from being looted. there are some people who have a political message up here. a lot of the folks we talked to said they were unhappy to see the destruction in th

they felt responsible to clean up. >> i live in santa monica.ighborhood, my local businesses. >> it is my neighborhood. it is what you do. we came here at 8:00 with kitchen supplies and tools. we said, this is what you do. reporter: so yesterday, demonstrators really overwhelmed and out numbered police. they did not have the man power to contain the protest as well as arrest the looters, who witnesses say they blended in. they were like camouflage using the protesters and then they would have instructions on their cell phone. they would use a hammer, crowbar to get into the businesses, strong nicks, shoes, that kind of thing. they fill their arms. dump them in the roving cars. do it again and then they changed their hat or their top to conceal them from police. they did not, however, use any kind of rubber bullets, really or foam projectiles for crowd control, yes. but when it came to the looters the cops were nowhere to be found. again they didn't have the manpower for it. a guy that ran jack's jewelers. ran there for 40 years. put watches and

in california, police arresting hundreds of rioters violating curfew in santa monica. rob: looters smashed windows, ransacking a number of stores in this beautiful neighborhood. jeff paul is live in santa monica as the police chief is condemning these criminal acts. jeff. >> reporter: and that cu curfew today started at 4:00 p.m., probably one of the earliest we've heard throughout the country, right here in santa monica. this is part of the reason why. after that protest today, you had looting which now led to fires and this fire department has been out here several hours, trying to knock this particular fire down. this building was hit hard, this entire street, actually, was hit hard by looting. you take a walk down here just for a few minutes and you can see leftover boxes, items left over, tons of broken glass, just scattered throughout the street. and this kind of further illustrates also what's happening right here. this is the rei store and it was -- a couple of the protesters who were out here who were protesting peacefully, part of the march, tried to stop a l

los angeles to to seaside city's long beach which is the largest port in the united states and santa monica which is a popular sort of vacation beach town to the west of downtown l.a. in both places largely peaceful protesters throughout the day marched along the streets. police keeping their distance from them but in in the middle of the afternoon here in in the law center in santa monica rather there were incidents of people breaking into stores taking out merchandise and running away sometimes jumping into cars and then speeding off these people seemed to have no connection to the peaceful protesters who were protesting the death of george floyd police brutality in general and systemic racism in the last couple of hours the police in santa monica have emerged in the very large numbers to arrest the remaining protesters people who were not fighting with the police but nevertheless refused to disperse now they are dispersing and many of them are have been placed under arrest in long beach there was also peaceful protesting but also looting at a shopping mall there so we are now under curfe
