we get closer to where the fire is burning west of santa monica and santa monica, reporting a wind gust to 39 la reporting 45 malibu hills reporting 50mph. that fire is kind of stationed between malibu and santa monica. meanwhile, for us here at home, not quite as strong, but we also have very gusty conditions out there today. mount saint helena this morning reported 52mph. we have areas near mount diablo this earlier today reported near 50mph. the relative humidity for us has dropped off dramatically since yesterday, but not critically low like it is over southern california. this, in addition to northern california, including the bay area, has received way more rain this season than southern california. southern california in most areas hasn't received any accumulation in months, so it is very dry and the winds are really creating some havoc out there. the pattern that is set up is pretty much for the entire state from the bay area. we've got that northeast flow. southern california also dealing with it. but the pressure gradient a little bit tighter there. and again that is what is r

annita: let's speak to our correspondent emma vardy in santa monica for us.that you have been in the smoke for hours now. tell us more about what the situation is like where you are. >> santa monica is one of the most famous parts of los angeles. some people may remember it from the barbie movie. look completely different today. the air is still very smoky here even though we have moved away from the pacific palisades area where the fires are still burning more fiercely. it is pretty deserted here. some people are out in it but even down here by the coast it is difficult to breathe. it tastes of smoke and you can barely see vary far into the distance because the smoke has clouded the city, coastline, as well as further inland. we know the firefighters are trying to battle the fire. the forecast is the wind will hopefully drop off a bit this afternoon. you can still feel the breeze down here although it is not as intense as it was overnight. annita: i am going to interrupt you to say that we can hear the wind. it is buffeting you, obviously moving the trees be

, pacific palisades sits between the santa monica mountains in the pacific ocean, that whatever it was, combined with the wind, quickly ignited a blaze that went from double-digit acreage to over 100 acres, to quickly over thousands of acres. and because of all this wind, these embers, usually we are associating fires with going uphill in a situation like this. they have gone all the way from up in the santa monica mountains and actually -- i don't know if i can show you if we swing the camera around real quick, but this is for the first time in quite some time -- the ridgeline there and some of the homes that are above pacific palisades, the fire came down from those mountains, all the way to the pacific ocean. and i think, what i've been told by people who are experts in this field is that you can always triangulate the start of a fire based on how it burned and when it burned. that process will certainly happen. but what we know for now, what we can say is that is fire that's burning here tonight is part of a blaze that ignited up in the santa monica mountains and was fueled by thes
