got your 50 miles an hour gust over the san gabriels. 20 to 30 miles an hour gust over the santa monica mountains. but it's tuesday when they start to look more impressive. look at all the dry air as you will see the humidity levels plummet down into the teens. all of these shifts and winds have had dramatic changes on the way the fire is moving. when you would look at it in terms of plotting on the maps, using the satellite heat signature for how the fire behavior has changed. if you look from the perspective of being downtown l.a., that's the eaton fire there at the base of the san gabriel mountains. it is one thing to look at the perimeter of the fire, and another thing to put that heat signature around the perimeter. that will show you how the fire has moved within the last 12 hours. that is the way the next phase of winds will be moving where they will take the fire and reverse their direction. so instead of going uphill like they have been, it will get pushed by the wind again and go from the northeast down to the southwest. for the palisades fire, that has much bigger implications. if you

we're situated at the pacific - situated at the pacific palisades is at the bottom of the santa monica mountain wind, we've never had a fire like this before ever though. it went from blue skies to black skies in a matter of minutes because the wind had shifted. all of the wind had shifted. all of the resources we take it to is side of the fire and then the wind shifted and our entire neighborhood caught for that and the resources weren't there and the resources weren't there and we ran out of water. my family has been in the palisades since the 1930s i'm a fifth generation palisade ian. i grew up in a beautiful pink brick house across the street from my grandparents when my mother grew up. her brother lives down the street with his wife, two kids, all three of us lost their houses. there is nothing left. we were watching the smoke billowed over. when they say pack your things ago, we packed tiptoe, hundred and £75 tortoise for the it went pretty slow so that we take a minute. again, we have 11 adults here for that we have six dogs, cat, a tortoise where just so happy to all have each other and

that's an affluent neighborhood in the santa monica mountains. so it really sits right between santa monica and malibu. thousands of people in the fire's path, along with more than 10,000 homes. firefighters working to douse homes in water. as that fire just continues to spread down pch. and there's another challenge for the firefighters abandoned cars. you see, traffic was so bad heading out of the fire zone, people decided walking was their safest bet. check out this video from the pacific palisades showing lines of abandoned cars on highway one, now closed because of the fir several dozen cars were also abandoned on sunset boulevard. check this out. bulldozers at one point had to be brought in to clear the cars from the roadway for fire trucks. some 30,000 people are now under evacuation orders. firefighters, you see that? that's a bad combination right there. that wind, it's because of dry conditions and those powerful santa ana winds which are expected to gain strength overnight. millions of people across california are under a red flag warni

a 26 mile per hour wind in the santa monica mountains with gusts to 31. we know that it is expected to increase as we go through the next few hours. we are still under a particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning that's basically a step up from a regular red flag warning, where the conditions are so critical that we may see some more fire starting today, or the ones that continue to burn spread in a different direction, and we are going to see those winds picking up going through late morning into the afternoon. but it looks like the peak of those winds will be hitting us by tomorrow morning. look at this. 7:00 in the morning, santa clarita, 57 mile per hour winds. and it may be even stronger for those elevations above 3000ft where we could see those gusts, possibly to 60 to 70mph. and this continues through noon on wednesday. so unfortunately, this will be a prolonged wind event. and we are not out of the woods just yet with this very critical fire danger. back to you. all right. kari. thank you. now our team continues to follow the fires in la c

it is still burning now in the santa monica mountains.california's largest january wildfire on record, having scorched almost 20,000 acres and destroying more than 5000 homes. >> the eaton fire is estimated to have damaged or destroyed as many as 5000 buildings. the fire near pasadena has burned close to 14,000 acres, doing extensive damage to altadena, and these fires are rapidly scorching their way into the record books. >> with the palisades fire now the third most destructive in state history. the camp fire in paradise is still the worst by a wide margin. 18,000 buildings destroyed and 85 people killed. back in 2018, the 2017 tubbs fire in the north bay is the second most destructive, at 5600 buildings gone and 22 people dead. until this week. the oakland hills fire in 1991 was the third most destructive at 2900 buildings burned with 25 lives lost. one challenge for l.a. leaders that goes beyond the fire fight. correcting misinformation spreading just as fast as the fires. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live in studi

you can see thick black smoke rising over the santa monica mountains.cuations are currently underway, as is the air attack. pacific coast highway is shut down. as we follow the latest developments here, let's bring in our meteorologist rosemary oroczo. because most people don't think of january as high fire season, but it has happened before in southern california. you're right. >> gasia not good. take a look at that. wow. you can see how the winds were really carrying the smoke. and as we turn it over to the graphics here, the high wind warning red flag warning for southern california is going through tomorrow. and for certain parts of the southern california area will go into thursday. and as i put this into motion, you'll see how all the oranges and reds just kind of remain in place. in fact, they even get worse, indicating stronger winds coming our way at times into the afternoon and evening hours. and the winds will continue through tomorrow. so a lot going on there, as we know, as we've been talking about, we even have local firefighters headed to

another good plume of smoke today and burning a little higher up towards the ridge of the santa monica mountains. it's kind of going the other way than it had been, going upslope primarily. this is the eaton fire burning in altadena. those are the three primary ones and the smoke kind of merges. it's going to be busy. we talked about winds in the last visit there and wind at least is going to die down starting tomorrow. they will get a little break. the upper level winds want to take some of that smoke and drift it a bit our way. we really won't experience much from that. we aren't really getting much impact at all from a smoke standpoint. low end of the concern scale, i know, but some people have asked and are wondering considering our recent awareness level of how bad it is to breathe that stuff in, which is a whole other side of this story, by the way, for everybody down in southern california who has been breathing this now for days in places, more on that in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. there's your seven-day forecast, nothing going on >>> coming up next at 5:00, as the devas

anywhere from southern california all the way to the border of mexico, all the way up into the santa monica mountainsstill in that critical and elevated risk, widespread throughout these communities. while wind gusts get anywhere up to around 50 60mph. now we're starting to see a shift in the winds, though, and it's been great news as we head into the coming days, we're going to continue to watch these winds die down. still pushing offshore right now up to around 40mph in areas like acton, over into santa clarita to. we watch those winds into the 8:00 hour tonight really diminish and then into the overnight hours, early morning hours tomorrow. we still have that offshore gust, but it won't be nearly as significant as it was the past few days. interestingly enough, that wind is actually going to start moving in from offshore once again. this is going to be a big game changer for us for a couple of reasons. that smoke has been pushing offshore, but now it's going to get recirculated back inland. so communities closer to the coast, all the way down into areas like long beach and throughout los angeles i

100mph across the san gabriel mountains and the nearby foothills, and then also across the santa monica mountains, extending across parts of the los angeles basin area, where we're having trees coming down. significant structural damage already occurring, and it will only get worse overnight. and then with the very dry air mass that settled over the area of very rare, volatile combination of parameters has come together to fuel the. explosive development of horrific wildfires across the los angeles area all the way towards the coast across the santa monica mountains and towards malibu. this is a particularly dangerous situation, a rare category of red flag warning that we used for the worst of the worst conditions that can come together to create the rapid spread of fires that spot miles in advance and spread rapidly, raging paths of destruction. we're seeing that come to fruition. and, you know, when we're making these forecasts and we're making these messages, you know, these these correspond to real world impacts. and it's so sad to see what's going on. and we urge everyone to stay at a high s

gusts reported at mount lukens magic mountain 90 mile per hour gusts in the santa monica mountains. settle pick 86 miles an hour. deer creek canyon, 80 miles per hours because of strong, gusty winds and those winds are blowing some of these particulate matter offshore. take a look at this forecast model, as you see the particulate matter from the wildfires surface smoke, if you will, going right down, baja, california and then taking a loop around. out to sea and then starting to stretch back again. he's this kind of that particulate matter. the smokes a very, very difficult. you don't want to breathe in. there's a red flag warning in southern california until 6 o'clock pm. that is for strong, gusty winds and low relative humidities as low as 5% isolated gusts up to 70 miles per hour. but the strongest winds hitting on thursday night into friday. noel debt. kathy, thank governor gavin newsom announced the state is mobilizing up to 140 additional. >> water tenders to assist in the ongoing firefight in los angeles county. and right now, more than 7500 firefighting and emergency person

this is the palisades fire burning in the affluent pacific palisades neighborhood in the santa monica mountains. cal fire just gave an update 30 minutes ago, saying the fire has exploded to almost 3000 acres. upward of 30,000 people have been forced to leave, more than 10,000 homes are threatened and many have already been destroyed. two men stayed behind to try to help save their neighbor's houses. listen to this. embers jump ahead as the wind blows, so they jump ahead of the fire and they catch things on fire. it's just there's fire all the way around us. you turn around one second. you're looking at the fire. look back while you're fighting fire. look back again. it's actually moved hundreds of feet in seconds. it goes that quick now. the traffic was so bad heading out of the fire zone that dozens of people had to abandon their cars and just flee on foot. in fact, one man says an officer started just telling people, get out of your car and go if you want to live. at one point, fire officials you can see there had to bulldoze all those abandoned cars to clear the roadway for the fire trucks.

warning has been dropped, but there were already minor mudslides happening throughout the santa monica mountains tonight. there's another burn scar, though. so you've got the eaton fire over here. if we put futurecast on here, watching both of those burn scars through the remainder of tonight, it's going to be touch and go, but i think we've seen the worst of this system. we still have to get through 10:00 tomorrow morning and it has been dicey there today. let's talk about our next chance for rain. for that, we'll take out the northern hemisphere and put on what does look like a pretty good looking storm track set up out in the pacific and if we take the rain in that storm track and play that forward, the first model says we might get some rain out of this as early as sunday. keep your eye on the timestamp down there. we'll let this model play ahead until it connects with that model. it's the american model. let's look at the other model. here's where we compare and contrast. we've got the american model in front of me and we've got the european model here and we can see the differences. this o

taking a look at our fire weather outlook, you zoom in to local communities close to the santa monica mountains. we're talking areas like malibu all the way up into san bernardino. these are the communities that we're really concerned about, because some of the strongest wind gusts and the lowest relative humidity is just centralized in that pink zone right there. and we make our way all the way down into the border close to mexico. very similar fire like conditions as we extend fire weather conditions as we extend into the afternoon and evening hours tonight. so here's what the santa ana winds are doing right now. they're changing directions. this is different compared to last week's windstorm. last week's was more directly from the north. this one's coming in from the east more so. and that changes the characteristics. so the firefighters out there and of course all those aircraft that dropped the retardant, they were gearing up for this week's weather storm. and now what we're seeing is strong winds still pushing offshore. just tilted a little bit different in the direction. we'll continue t

the santa monica mountains there, the san gabriel mountains to very gusty and low humidity. in fact, start to drop off already. we've seen santa clarita down as low as 29%, but we're talking maybe down in the teens as we head throughout the night tonight and early tomorrow morning. so dangerous conditions there. any fire that gets started? of course, things are still dry from hot summer months. and they just have not had much in the way of rainfall. it also fire warnings, an issue for southern california continuing there here in the bay area. we're gonna see those winds kick up. we've got the fog outside right now. but as the winds begin develop overnight tonight, we're gonna see that way. temperatures around the bay area today right at the average in san francisco has a cool. 57, though, the fog outside 58 in oakland. 64 degrees. not bad at all. in san jose. 62 in livermore. 59 degrees in concord. 58 in santa rosa and 55 degrees in half moon bay. but much warmer weather is actually on the scout. today's all enact the record for the state. 73 degrees set back in 18. 87. i thi

the santa monica mountains is a community of hundreds of homes in the top of the santa monica mountains. in between where we are, pacific palisades malibu and santa monica is where this all started. those are the pictures that we saw yesterday of hundreds of cars getting abandoned on palisades drive. this comes out of the highlands and people literally running so quickly. these are hurricane force, life- threatening wins. the national weather surface issued an alert yesterday morning that covered most of seller - southern california of how deadly these wins will be. i do not say people do not take it seriously or anybody could comprehend. this place was a tinderbox ready to go. whatever happened in the palisades highlands it ignited into something so big and ferocious, something nobody could have anticipated. also we have not had a lot of rain, it has been very dry in southern california. the lack of water for the vegetation after two years of a lot of rain created a perfect storm for a literal firestorm. >> jacob, what makes you say, you said the winds have kicked up and i see things b

as of right now in the santa monica mountains, we're seeing the wind at about 28mph and some of those gusts picking up to 37mph. so once again, the winds are getting stronger. the relative humidity is critically low, and we are still seeing this particularly dangerous red flag warning the pds red flag warning, which is the highest level of a red flag warning you can get. we are seeing that once again, in effect for pretty much all of southern california, for those coastal areas where we will see the impact of these winds increasing in the humidity levels decreasing as we go throughout the day. take a look at the forecast. our hour by hour forecast shows just how strong those winds are going to be at 3 to 4:00 in the morning. this is a really dangerous time as many people are sleeping. if a fire does start to spread, maybe in a different direction, well, there will be a lot of people who may not heed those warnings because they're asleep at the time. and we're going to see these winds increasing through tomorrow afternoon. but the peak of the wind is expected within the next 24 hours.

as you see here, the wind speeds in the santa monica mountains there between malibu and heading up towards encino to the north. north at 38mph, gusting now to 45mph and the humidity quite low, down to 20%. we've been watching the expansion of the evacuation order zones from last night, as the fire made a run to the north of a bit of a change in the wind earlier this morning, and then activity in these red dots here, more active on the east flank of the fire near the mandeville canyon area there, north of brentwood. so the concern is, is the fire made a bit of that jog towards 405 north of brentwood as the winds are shifting, that could allow the fire to make another run to the south. that is something we're watching tonight as red flag conditions continue around the palisades fire and to the northeast, the eaton fire. seeing a high wind warning as these wind speeds expected to accelerate tonight and peak tomorrow morning out of the north from about 40 to 50mph. and those hilltops there around the palisades fire and not far from altadena. very dry conditions. and unfortunately, the long ran
