"today in the bay's" arturo santiago live in west san jose.morning. >> reporter: we are on the corner of miller and bollinger on the lot where this proposed mcdonald's is slated to be built. hundreds of neighbors do not want it here mainly because it is going to be coming with a drive-through. so far, the city seems to be siding with them on that account. the concerns are numerous. mcdonald's could undermine efforts, they say, to fight childhood obesity, safety issues with kids running across the street to get to the fast food and it might take away from nearby restaurants. the biggest beef, though, seems to be with the drive-through. 750 residents signed a petition voicing their opposition to the mcdonald's and its plans to install a drive-through. they have denied a permit for that drive-through. the developers are appealing that decision to the city council. >> we have a neighborhood here and it is really a pedestrian neighborhood more man anywhere along. the kids are walking back and forth. a drive-through just isn't in the character for a

ar arturo santiago is live with whether this will delay the opening. good morning, arturo. >> reporter: good morning. the bridge is safe, they say, and opening day ceremonies will not be delayed for the day after labor day. the metropolitan transportation commission has confirmed that 32 of these giant bolts have snapped and now caltrans can considering replacing all 288 bolts on the new span. the bolts, which are also known as rods, are anywhere from 9 to 17 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. this is apparently a chemistry probl problem. hydrogen is present in the metal, making the metal brittle. they're pretty confident the problem with the bolts is not a design issue or a construction problem, but the bolts were installed back in 2008. that was before the roadway decking was put in. so access to a lot of these bolts isn't going to be easy. right now it's not known how long it will take to fix the problem or how much it will cost. officials with the metropolitan transportation commission, the agency that's overseeing construction on the new span

arturo santiago with more on the little girl's condition and the man who rushed to help her. arturo. >> reporter: laura, the good news is the little girl's injuries were not light threatening. what a scary situation. she was brought to the hospital in oakland with the arrow still stuck in her leg. the 8-year-old girl is from san rafael. she was on a field trip with her 3rd grade class yesterday. around 10:00 in the morning she was sitting on a life sized model of a whale when an arrow that looks like it came from a crossbow hit her in the thigh. police don't know if it was an accident or someone shot her on purpose. this brave little girl was able to stay calm and wait for emergency personnel to arrive. the arrow doesn't seem to be associated with any kind of experiment or demonstration or anything associated with the hall of science and there's no archery range in the immediate area. police canvassed the area and concentrated on a neighborhood north of the science center where there are houses and a parking lot. the incident has put nearby residents on edge. >> this incident
