good evening, i'm sara donchey. people duck for cover and abandon their cars while police ran along el camino real in redwood city. an armed man was in the car with three kids. they made it out safe. betty yu is live for us. what does it look like? >> reporter: sara, in the last minute or so, redwood city police took down the crime tape and reopened this section of el camino real which was shut down for several hours today. earlier, i spoke to one worker in the area who saw all the drama unfold. shortly after you hear an officer say we are here to help you, you hear a shot go off. and more shots ringing out. >> somebody is shooting. >> oh my god. >> we should probably go inside. >> reporter: at the same time, just a few pete away, kevin was ducking for cover in front of this red jeep on el camino real. right across the street from the crime scene. >> it was a scarier moment of my life. my heart was racing. i thought okay. i just want to stick behind this jeep. people are pulled out of their cars and told to run. >>

hello, i'm juliette goodrich in for sara donchey. safety is on everyone's mind as the holiday shopping season is on full swing. with more people out and about, there is a call arwide. london breed was out promising a safe holiday shopping season for both locals and visitors. if you recall last year, union square gained national attention for scenes like this. crowds of shoplifters rushing several high-end stores and taking off with everything they could carry. since then there has been a strong police presence with a mobile command center and seemingly constant patrols in the area. but that's not all they're doing to make sure the shopping season goes smoothly. betty yu joins us with a hook at how the city is beefing up security, so everyone could feel safe. betty, you were able to see it firsthand? >> reporter: that's right. tonight, i felt very safe reporting in union square with the various layers of security on virtually every corner. some shoppers were surprised to see this area flooded with police officers and private security.

sara donchey with our clearest picture of the disturbing chain of events that happened inside the home. >> reporter: cameras caught nancy pelosi leaving under heavy guard. the attack on her husband is drawing new scrutiny. there is a four page letter to capitol police demanding answers about protections for lawmakers. according to the complaint david depape allowed paul pelosi to use the bathroom where he grabbed his phone, called 911, put it on speaker. depape got agitated. pelosi tells 911 that the man told him to put the phone down and do what he says. the dispatcher asked for the man's name. the man responded my name is david and i am a friend of theirs. >> he doesn't know who the male is but he advised that his name is david. >> reporter: depape tried to restrain pelosi, pelosi tried to grab the hammer. depape took it, lunged at pelosi striking him in the head full force knocking him unconscious for about three minutes, waking up in a pool of his own blood. it is said this was a suicide mission. the district attorney brooke jenkins describes depape as a threat to public safety. >>
