hello, i'm juliette goodrich in for sara donchey. safety is on everyone's mind as the holiday shopping season is on full swing. with more people out and about, there is a call arwide. london breed was out promising a safe holiday shopping season for both locals and visitors. if you recall last year, union square gained national attention for scenes like this. crowds of shoplifters rushing several high-end stores and taking off with everything they could carry. since then there has been a strong police presence with a mobile command center and seemingly constant patrols in the area. but that's not all they're doing to make sure the shopping season goes smoothly. betty yu joins us with a hook at how the city is beefing up security, so everyone could feel safe. betty, you were able to see it firsthand? >> reporter: that's right. tonight, i felt very safe reporting in union square with the various layers of security on virtually every corner. some shoppers were surprised to see this area flooded with police officers and private security.
