i'm sara donchey in tonight for juliette. >>> drugs, needles, trash and an encampment blocking an emergency exit, what parents and kids have been witnessing day to day. ascend charter school is in the fruitvale district and today the community is celebrating a small victory. the city cleared that area out and now neighbors are thinking outside the box to keep things safe going forward. our da lin shows us how. >> reporter: no more used needles, abandoned cars, and drug sales. instead neighbors put in these planter boxes to prevent an encampment from returning. neighbors and parents like perla benitez feel safe walking on 38th avenue once again behind ascend charter school. perla has three kids at ascend. we interviewed her and a few other parents sunday about the safety problems. some vehicle dwellers parked in front of the school emergency exit. a teacher shared a photo of someone reportedly from the encampment climbing over the fence to steal from the school. some students say they saw fights and drug activity at the encampment while attending their outdoor gardening class 20 feet away. a
