let's go straight to sara ganim on the ground outside of the prison. frankly we have seen focused on one area in this entire search. >> reporter: that's right, poppy. we know that state police are converging and canvassing an area in friendship new york just north of the border with pennsylvania. they got a credible tip earlier in the day, this afternoon, and authorities telling cnn that they have aviation units and k-9s on the ground actively searching right now for these two convicted murderers who escaped from this prison more than two weeks ago today. authorities also telling us that this is an area that's about 30 miles east of a place where there were two reported sightings last weekend. it's also near railroad tracks that connect those two sightings. i talked to a witness on the ground who told me there is a helicopter that has been hovering for more than an hour. he says state police are swarming the area setting up roadblocks hovering over a creek near railroad tracks. the man who i spoke to is the caretaker of a cemetery that's right in the m

so let's get right to cnn's sara ganim she's ganim. what can you tell us sara? >> good morning, carol. this owl's head area near the mountain view area is where police and searchers converged last night. more than 100 police vehicles we saw. we saw them on all terrain vehicles tactical teams searches through wooded areas. this is the adirondacks, so it's very rural. a lot of unoccupied cabins, vacation homes, hiking trails biking trails. the things police and searchers have been focused on since the beginning of this now more than two-week search. they converged on this town 30 miles west of the prison where those two inmates escaped. there's clear walking trails and roads that lead from the town of dannemora where that prison is to this area. the franklin county district attorney telling me this morning that on saturday a witness who was checking on an unoccupied vacation cabin saw a man who ran out the back door of the cabin, had clearly been burglarized. law enforcement went in, found it to be a credible possible sighting of one of the two inmates who have es

let's go to sara ganim live in owl's head new york. sara there was news yesterday that we have a very specific nugget and a very specific something that was left behind. tell me what that is. >> reporter: that's right. a source that was briefed on this investigation told cnn's deb feyerick that they found boots and other provisions that the inmates took with them inside the cabin, that it appears they left in a hurry and left those behind. and that is significant because, brooke the terrain out here is really rough, really rugged and harsh terrain. we're in franklin county and the sheriff told me if boots were left behind and these inmates -- or at least one of them is maybe barefoot they would not last long. there are sudden areas where there's swamps and then cliffs and really thick, heavy brush. now, i can tell you, even standing here all day, this is the road where they are bussing in the search crews and we've been seeing them bus them in literally bus loads. also literally trucking in al-terrain vehicles and other four-wheelers, p

sara ganim, thank you so much. we'll take you live to my colleague pablo sandoval standing next to the field where this bloody picture of david sweat was taken, the field where his 23 days on the run came to an end with two gunshots to the back. polo this police officer who spotted him, who shot him, he is being hailed a hero. how did this all go down? >> reporter: like a hollywood movie, brooke. that's how it was described t. was a dramatic ending that took place yesterday. the police officer that spoke to governor cuomo said he was driving down the roads identified a suspicious individual. he claims he was able to identify him as david sweat, at which point sweat immediately makes a break for the tree line you see in the distance there, brooke. two main concerns on the mind of this police sergeant, one of them sweat was wearing camouflage clothing so the main concern is if he was able to make it intoed wooded area he could lose sight of him and he would slip away. the other concern, brooke ohm about a mile and a

cnn's sara ganim is in owls head, new york, where dna of the escaped killers was just found. sara, what is the latest on the hunt this morning? >> reporter: good morning, john. state police telling me everything here is status quo. they're dealing with stormy weather, a lot of on and off pouring rain. something they've been dealing with several days of this 18-day search, but that's not stopping them from literally trucking in not just searchers but also equipment. we've seen truckloads of atvs and four-wheelers. they are clearly continuing to search this wooded area around where that dna was found in that cabin over the weekend. now, that's what's going on on the search side. on the investigation side we've learned that authorities are looking into the possibility that some of those tools were actually smuggled into the prison through frozen hamburger meat. these two inmates, remember, they lived on a block called the honor block where they were allowed to have some extra special privileges such as a hot plate where they could cook their own food, and authorities believe that

. >> cnn's sara ganim is live in owls head new york.hat's the notion of one of these two being barefoot? how do investigators know that? >> a law enforcement source was briefed on the investigation told cnn deb feyerick that these two had to leave in a hurry and this witness, as we know came up on an atv upon his cabin to check on it and it was an unexpected visit. this law enforcement source said that they left behind personal belongings including a pair of boots and provisions that they had brought along, presumably provisions to eat and other things that you would need if you were on the run. now, the key thing here brooke about the boots, is that this is incredibly rough, rugged very thick terrain. thick woods. i just spoke to the sheriff a couple of minutes ago and asked him, if somebody was out there barefoot could they make their way around without hurting themselves? and this is what he said. take a listen. >> i don't think you could navigate this terrain if you were barefoot. it's that thick and dense. no they've got something

sara ganim is in dannemora where she interviewed the attorney for the corrections officer who has beenon administrative leave. so alexandra, do police feel like they were closing in? what's the expectation from the press conference? >> reporter: look a law enforcement official had told cnn a day ago that a credible tip had come in reporting a citing of two men walking along a railroad line. any time you have a credible tip you certainly hope law enforcement officers are closing in but one day later new york state police are telling us they still cannot qualify this as a confirmed citing. there are 300 different law enforcement officers from a variety of different agencies who have set up camp in this area some 300 miles southwest of the prison that they broke out of. they'll try to track down any leads until that initial tip is exhausted. what they were told is that two men were sighted fulfilling the descriptions of richard matt and david sweat walking near that railroad line. the sheriff's office says investigators were shown a set of tracks near the railroad line which they were hop

cnn's sara ganim and polo sandoval are in plattsberg york. sara tell us about the court delay. why it happened? >> reporter: joyce mitchell arrived here an hour ago but she hasn't appeared in court yet. she got a new attorney this morning. the court appointed her a new attorney. her last one had to stop representing her because of a previous conflict with a previous case. she's here this morning for a pretty routine proceeding on the criminal complaint against her. you will recall on friday she was arrested, charged with bringing contraband into the prison. remember she's the prison seamstress who had a relationship with both of these men who have escaped. she's been charged now with bringing them tools that police say they used to get their way out of prison to sneak out that night. now, we expect her to be in court at some point this morning. however, that hasn't happened yet. as we said she has a new attorney. they've been meeting for the past hour or so presumably talking about this case. we do expect to hear more but over the weekend i talked to the district attorney we le

sara ganim is in plattsburgh, no, foll new york, following all the latest. >> reporter: just moments ago we saw the prison seamstress, joyce mitchell, in court for her first major court appearance. she waived her right to the preliminary hearing essentially. her new lawyer who was appointed this morning because of a conflict with the old lawyer, he essentially said we waive the right to have a hearing on these criminal charges. of course, those criminal charges are that she helped these two inmates escape out of prison by bringing them tools that they needed to cut their way into the prison walls and eventually escape. now, new details from the district attorney that these men might have been planning this in the nights leading up to their escape by climbing into the prison walls, planning out their escape route, and today just moments ago the district attorney also told cnn that he believes that they may have also found access to even more tools while crawling through those walls, finding a toolbox that belonged to contractors who were already doing construction work on that prison.

this is -- what they're looking at are really a rural, heavily wooded area, and that is where our sara ganim is monitoring all of the police activity this morning for us. so, sara, what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning, john and kate. yeah, this is an area that police and search teams converged on late last night. we saw about 100 police vehicles here last night, all-terrain vehicles going into woods, following trails. also tactical search teams on the ground as well. the activity, the visible activity, seems to have died down a little bit this morning. you can see behind me there's actually a car, a vehicle car checkpoint. they've set up a perimeter, but we know they're searching in the wooded areas. this is the adirondacks in upstate new york. there are a lot of unoccupied seasonal cabins, biking trails, hiking trails, the things searches have been focused on since the beginning when the inmates escaped. we do know from talking to the district attorney this morning that the lead that led them here was a witness who was checking on a vacation cabin in the woods for a friend and saw
