sara sidner is outside the courthouse.ubmitted a note to the judge asking for clarification over one of the charges. tell us about that. >> reporter: that's right, they asked the judge for clarification over the seditious conspiracy charge, which is as you just mentioned, the most serious charge that comes with a 20-year maximum sentence if convicted. they got the answer, and have been deliberating now for about 21 hours or so over the past three days. now, this is really a historic trial. i don't think we can overstate the nature of this case. this is, as one of the defense attorneys said, a once in a lifetime kind of a trial. this is a case about an alleged conspiracy to forcefully stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power right here in the united states. on january 6th, we saw the attack on the capitol. the prosecutors are arguing that these five defendants, four of whom are admitted members of the far right militia group called the oath keepers. one of them says he's an associate of the oath keepers, but they ar

significant number of new vote numbers tonight in arizona where cnn senior national correspondent sara sidner is live for us in phoenix. sara, what are you picking up there? >> reporter: in just about an hour, we will get another bunch of votes that have been counted, and the public will see who those votes went for. we've got several tight ralces here. you really have to wait until the end when these tight races are going forward. and one of the tightest races is for the governorship with kari lake and katie hobbs. they are neck and neck. and we are watching that race very closely. there is also a very significant race nationally and that is the senate race. and that's been fairly close or not as close as the governor's race. i do want to mention we are just getting new numbers in from another county. maricopa is the largest county, the most populous county as well. and they have just under 400,000 votes that have to be counted. and we also know that the second largest county pima county has just reported they have 159,000 votes that still need to be counted. and they do not think they will

cnn's sara sidner has the very latest. >> reporter: it really can't be overstated just how significant and important of a case this is. this is perhaps the highest profile trial in connection with the january 6th attack on the capitol. it involved five people, all of them accused of seditious conspiracy. four of them members of the far right militia group, oath keepers. one of them the founder stewart rhoades and one associate of the group. basically prosecutors said these people tried to forcibly stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power on january 6th and the world saw some of their activities live on television as you saw this stack of people who were dressed in military garb combat gear going up the steps of the capitol, some of them going into the capitol and then some of them taking video of themselves inside the capitol saying words like, we stormed the capitol. that is what one of the defendants, jessica watkins said, on social media. in the end the jury decided that two people were guilty of seditious conspiracy and those two people are the founder of the far right mili

sara sidner is live in phoenix at the maricopa county elections center.n do we expect more results? >> reporter: look, they have approximately 300,000 votes left to be counted and this process takes a long time because here in arizona they are verifying every single signature and we were just told by the maricopa county elections tabulation center that they are about to start that verification process yet again. they have been up all night trying to count all of these ballots that have come in. a lot of this state and a lot of this county, which is the most populous county, votes by mail or votes early and so a lot of the count has happened, about 60% to 70% of the count has already happened, but they do have about 30% to go and that includes about those 300,000 ballots, many of those were mailed in, but they received them by tuesday. so that is what's happening just in the building behind me, they are starting that verification process and we will know more very, very, very soon. i do want to mention that you talked about the candidates that are up for e

sara sidner is outside the maricopa county elections center. latest et mate, i believe, about 600,000 votes remain to be counted there. where are those votes, sara? >> good morning, erica. the vast majority of them are from right here in maricopa county, 400,000 to about 410,000 votes still left to be counted. they will begin counting in about two hours. they will start verifying the signatures. there are a team of people that are in this place they call the ballot vault. we have been back there to see how they do their jobs. first they sort all the ballots and then they start verifying signatures. that's why this process takes a little longer than maybe some other places. they are very diligent about doing this to make sure that they have the count correct. earlier we heard from the chairman of the board of supervisors here in maricopa county talking about the vote count and what we can expect. >> we're right there between about 400 and 410,000 ballots left to count. we're now getting into what we call laterallies. these are early ballots that

i want to bring in sa sara sidner. what are you hearing from voting officials there?so they've already counted in this county more than 800,000 votes. one of the issues here is there is concern about safety. they have changed some things at some of the voting centers. there are 223 in the county. they are saying, look, we are seeing large numbers of people who have come out to vote or have mailed in or put their vote in ballot boxes. typically about 85% of the vote here, they vote early. and so they are going to have a huge number of those voters already counted by the time that the election happens. we will be watching all of that. we are also here waiting to hear from the sheriff and the board of suffers as well as election officials about false narratives about voting and the election that have been spread or they're worried about will be spread so they're trying to knock that down as soon as possible. >> sara sidner in arizona, thank you to you and to all of our teams across the country. >>> next, house speaker nancy pelosi reveals how she learned someone broke in

cnn's sara sidner has been inside of that courtroom.any things, it is hard to get into. the first ten minutes of him taking the stand, he has choked up at least three times. in front of jury. this is a man, remember, who the defense is clearly trying to show his soft side or maybe that is what he is trying to show. he's also talked a lot about historical things. asked about 9/11, what that has to do with the attack on the capitol is another thing but he was asked about 9/11 and he started to choke up an cry and talked about colleagues inside of the towers. he talked about himself being a libertarian and having worked for ron paul, that he was really trying to show that this group that he formed, the oath keepers which he formed in 2009, isn't in his words racist or anti-anything, anti-lgbtq. he talked about different areas and places for example he was invited to lexington green where people came together after they were formed and he started to cry on stand talking about the historical issue that or incident that happened at the battle

we have cnn's sara sidner who is covering this trial for us.n to keep trump in power. what did he say on the stand? >> it was really interesting. we saw a very different side or at least the jury did of stewart rhodes. and it seems very calculated. he got on the stand, and he really acted as his own character witness. he talked about, you know, how much of a person that he believes in doing the right thing, that he's nonviolent, that he wants to protect businesses, particularly black businesses and stood up for members of lgbtq. you saw this side of him that was softer and gentler than what the jury has been seeing for the past four weeks where they are seeing all kinds of violent rhetoric, aimed at the biden administration before it took office, and also aimed at donald trump to try to get him not to concede. and so you saw very different person, and it seems that this is a strategy that the defense is using that he is trying to show his other side. the other thing that i thought was really interesting is when he was asked about what his thoug

cnn's sara sidner with more. >> reporter: elmer stewart rhodes did take the stand in his own defense.emed to act as his own character witness. it was clear he was trying to show a softer, more carrying side of himself after the jury, for weeks, has been seeing some of the text messages and signal messages and hearing secret recordings that show him using often violent, angry, political rhetoric and talking about things like the civil war and bloody battle may have to ensue to stop president-elect biden at the time from coming into power. in the leadup to the january 6th attack and even after the january 6th attack. rhodes, in his testimony, put on a big show of emotion, choking up at least three times on the stand while talking about his life and his beliefs. he billed himself to the jury as nonviolent, a lover of america, a believer in the constitution, fighter for what is right, a helper who helps all manner of people from lgbtq members, to black business owners in ferguson, missouri, who, for example, asked for his help. when the uprising sparked violence there after police officer

. >>> let's go to cnn's sara sidner in arizona right now. a lot of eyes there right now. you're at the election center. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: i just wanted to give you an example of what people are going to see on election day. they're going to come and put their i.d. here. it'll be checked and printed out. they have 12,000 different ballots linked to whoever checks in. they'll get their ballot and fill it out. if they have issues with being able to see or hear, there's braille, and they can just put their ballot here, and that will count. this is where you would fill your ballot out, and then this is the machine that are in all the different vote centers here. there are 233 of them in the largest, most populous county in the state. they will put their ballots in here and that will actually eventually end up here. now i want to let you know that whe when -- the count is happening right now. this is a machine right here. she is now cleaning it, but she is about to start putting those ballots into the machine, and they will be counted. you should know that

cnn's sara sidner has been watching this trial and she's with us now on this. , sara, at this case that the prosecution built over the past month. >> reporter: yeah, i mean, this has been a case that has gone on for four weeks. the prosecution started testimony from witnesses four weeks ago. and now they have come to the end of that. and one of their last -- the last people on the stand was an fbi agent talking through some of the texts that we've been seeing. but they also played this secretly recorded conversation, after january 6th, just giving you a sense of what stewart rhodes was thinking and how he was feeling after january 6th. this was recorded in a parking lot about six days after the attack on the capitol. and it was recorded by a u.s. military veteran who testified that he had some kind of indirect connection with donald trump and this was mr. rhodes, who is the founder of the oath keepers, trying to send a message to donald trump at that time, and it makes clear here is that he was still pressing forward with this idea that somehow donald trump shou

sara sidner there in phoenix for us again this hour. sara, what are you tracking? who are you talking to? what are they telling you? >> reporter: we are talking to county officials who are showing us that the vote is happening right now. yes, they are counting away, counting all of those ballots, we know that there are 560,000 ballots still yet to be counted in the entire state but the bulk of those, 400,000 to 410,000 are right here in maricopa county. you see the election workers are diligently doing their jobs at this hour. there is a huge load of ballots that has just gone through the machine, and you see the young woman putting those ballots in a box, so those ballots have gone through the tabulation machines and we will hear in the evening our time around 6:00 p.m. arizona time, 8:00 p.m. your time new numbers, the new tabulations from some of those early votes and then eventually once they get through some of those 400,000 votes as we get closer and closer to friday, saturday, we're expecting to have about 95% potentially of all of the votes counted and it w

cnn's sara sidner is where there was a news conference about election misinformation and security. wolf, basically what they're saying here is they have seen in the last few days a lot of misinformation targeted at maricopa county. they are trying to knock it down over and over again. they had this press conference which they started having because of these issues to try to tamp down on some of that. now, we also heard there were a few more people who complained about voter intimidation. we talked to the sheriff who said in 2020 they were a bit surprised at the reaction here and what happened here in arizona during the presidential election, and they have made moves and changes to have more security at areas where people go and vote. he also said one of the things that caused violence to ramp up is having leaders in parties or people who are the candidates in the race refuse to accept the election results. take a listen. >> the men and women who put on uniforms like these are going to go out and put their lives on the line to keep not only the vote and the people counting the vote s

i'm sara sidner in for amara walker. >> good morning.n newsroom. thanks for joining us. >> well, it could be a stormy saturday for the millions of travelers trying to get home after the thanksgiving holiday. aaa estimates 55 million people traveled for thanksgiving. those numbers are nearing pre-pandemic levels. good for the economy. might be rough on travelers at airports. they are facing a huge surge on sunday. >> yeah. mother nature could corm indicate the return home for people in the air and on the road. nearly 900 flights already delayed across the united states. that number only expected to climb. let's go to the cnn weather center with meteorologist allison chinchar who has been tracking the latest developments for us. allison, where is this weather headed? >> really you have a lot of different spots because we have multiple different systems. we have heavy rain, severe thunderstorms and snow. it just depends where you are going to or coming from that could cause some travel problems. the main system across the center portion of the country

sara sidner is in maricopa county, another key county in a battleground state that could decide who controls senate. and there in arizona this could all boil down to the latino vote. >> reporter: that's right. and we should mention that here in arizona the largest block of voters are actually independents or those who are with a third party. so not democrat or republican. and then following the independent voters, the second largest number are republicans, and the third largest number are democrats. now as far as the latino vote goes, this is an important voting block in arizona. this is maricopa county where we are standing, we are standing outside of a place where folks can vote. i want to give you a look, very, very slow traffic. people are coming in, and they are voting. you should know that in this particular county, about 85% of votes are cast early. whether that is mail-in, walking them in, or whether that is going to the polls a bit early. are you going to hear very early some of the counts that happened about an hour after the election close the. i tell you that the latino vote repr

sara sidner is live outside of the federal court in washington with the verdict rendered in the history, what more can you tell us? >> there's no way to overstate just how important and historic this trial was. this is the very first trial in which several defendants where convicted of seditious conspiracy. now the jury has spoken. two of the people on trial, members of the oath keepers, a far-right militia group here on january 6th, who you saw video ofand the world's of video of wearing military combat gear walking up the steps of the capital, just to my left. some of them going into the capitol and bragging about storming the capitol. two people have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy. they include the founder and leader of the oath keepers, elmer stewart rhodes the third has been found guilty of the most serious charge in this case, seditious conspiracy. he's joined by kelly meggs, one of his lieutenants, he was found guilty of seditious conspiracy. that's a charge that the jury had to take quite a while to look at because of the seriousness of the charge. which is trying to

sara sidner is in phoenix outside the maricopa county election center. one of the biggest population centers waiting on vote totals to update. sara, arizona had some of the most closely watched races on the state and national level. when will we have answers? >> that is a very good question, ana. i wish i could give you an exact number but i have someone here who can give you some great numbers and updated numbers. we are here with the chairman of the maricopa county board of supervisors, bill gates is here with us and we are actually inside looking at the tabulations happening right this minute. the counting continues and i know that you guys will be counting until you are done. i mean that's where we're at. can you give me a sense of how many people came out to vote? was this a huge turnout. >> yeah, so this was -- we've had a big turnout through the whole election because it's not just election day but started early voting several weeks in advance of that. with respect to election day itself we had about 230,000 people come in person, but then also --

let's bring in paula reed, sara sidner and elliott williams. paula, let me start with you.s conspiracy theories. there was not a consensus these were the charges to bring. >> that's right exactly right. there was reluctance on the part of the attorney general. now that they have secured these two convictions against two defendants, the attorney general taking a moment to do a victory lap here. this is really significant. here a jury weighed the evidence, and found what happened on january 6 was not spontaneous. instead, the product of an organized conspiracy. you could see what the attorney general was really trying to say here is, we do more work here at the justice department than just these high-profile political investigations into the former president and his associates. over the past seven years or so, there has been frustration inside the justice department that so much of the attention goes to the high-profile political investigations, either into former secretary of state clinton's emails, the mueller probe, the two investigations into former president trump. they

cnn's sara sidner joins us from outside of federal court in washington, sarah, what's the latest?t can't be overstated. this is a historic day in what was a historic trial. that's because this charge of seditious conspiracy, along with many of the other charges that they face, up to ten charges. it's significant, it is rare, and the heaviest artist we've really seen in these january 6th cases. this is the first time that the doj, federal prosecutors try a case where seditious conspiracy was one of the charges, and what ended up happening was that two of five people who were accused of seditious conspiracy were found guilty. one of the five, significant because he is the founder and leader of the far-right militia group, the oath keepers. stewart rhodes the third was found guilty of seditious conspiracy, as was kelly meggs. he was one of the lieutenants, as prosecutors put, it and also an oath keeper himself. he was also found guilty, this was not a clean sweep for the prosecution. of the five, to only two people were found guilty of statistics -- it's a rare charge, it's a very he

we have a team of reporters across the country, sara sidner in arizona. with you, sara, standing by. i know you've seen a steady stream of students coming to vote there. >> reporter: that's right. there are a lot of students who have been voting throughout the day and we spoke to some of them earlier about the many different issue, one big issue happening now is about some issues with tabulation machines. there are about 20% of the tabulators at the 223 different voting locations here in maricopa county were having problems where people couldn't actually have their vote counted in that machine, but election officials have told us that they have fixed most of them and they know what the issue is. it was with someone putting in security passwords too many times that locked the machines but i will tell you that they have been able to figure that out. there are still a few more machines they need to get to they told us just a few minutes ago, and they want to make sure that people understand this because this is blown up on social media from some of the candi

thank you sara sidner.ut not so fast. >> yeah. you can see mark kelly with a lead of about 6 points right now. in the gubernatorial race, katie hobbs less of a lead, 2 points. but there's more votes to come in. we learned in arizona two years ago -- this is mark kelly, d plus one. du d plus six right now. the presidential race from two years ago. i want to wind the clock back. when there was 72% in, joe biden had a lead of some 218,000 votes. that was the first votes on election night. by the next morning, where we are now, that lead was cut to 130,000 votes. by wednesday, noon, down to 93,000. you can see it keeps on shrinking. thursday, just 68,000. sunday it was 18,000. and then ultimately, a week after election day, 14,000 by the time it was done, just 11,000 so the lead got smaller and smaller. kelly is at .6 now. you can expect it to shrink. does he have enough of a pad, that's what we have to wait and see. >> you say arizona is different, especially when it comes to mail-in ballots? >> it can be. in

sara sidner is in phoenix where they're currently processing and counting these ballots. a? >> reporter: about 86,000 of those 400,000 votes that are still yet to be counted here in maricopa county have been signature verified and they are counting them as we speak. so those are going through the process. we will know by the end of the evening here arizona time. some new numbers for you but there are really pointed comments being made by election officials here today. we heard very strong comments about some of the accusations being made by republicans, whether it be online or on camera to media organizations, basically republicans are accusing maricopa county of conducting a fraudulent vote, they are also accusing them of being criminal because of some of the issues that happened with the printers that did not work, did not print dark enough ink and therefore could not be tabulated in some of the voting centers. i do want to let you hear from bill gates who is the head of the county board of supervisors here in maricopa county responding to what happened because of all th

let bring in our chief law enforcement john miller, defense attorney shan woo and sara si sidner. what stands out to you from this suspect's first appearance moments ago in a courtroom and how strong is the prosecution's case here? >> i think the prosecution's case is looking really strong at this point. this defendant is in a no win situation, ultimately, his defense counsel will have to look to resolve this case by some sort of what we call a global plea. meaning they want to resolve both the federal and state charges. what i pick up, wolf, from the judge's actions here is the judge is taking the dangerousness of this situation very seriously by entering the civil protection order that's like an insurance claim in case something goes wrong with the criminal case and he gets out on bail, that will be an additional layer of protection for the pelosi family so we can see the judge is concerned about the dangerousness of this situation. >> very dangerous situation, indeed. s sara it reported members of the pelosi family can hear the 911 calls and see the police body camera footage.

as you said, you did release results last night of about 62,000 votes, but then today told sara sidneryou know, of course, out there with you. our reporter who's covering this. you said still about 400,000 votes wreeremaining. can you explain for us to explain better why were the numbers appear to keep changing? >> yes. absolutely. it's a great question. so when i gave that 300,000 number, that would have been yesterday morning. that was based on an estimate of the number of people who dropped off early ballots on election day. that was consistent with the high numbers we had seen in the past. well, yesterday we determined how many ballots had been dropped off by people, early ballots had been dropped off on election day. it was a number we'd never seen before. 290,000 ballots were dropped off on election day. that's 70% more than the previous record. so that's why i was low on those numbers yesterday. that was an estimate. i told the folks that, but it surprised us and gets us to a little over 400,000. we're very confident with that number now and from this point we're going to go dow

. >> let's go now to arizona where we find sara sidner. largest county, maricopa county, sara. that includes phoenix. what are you picking up there? >> reporter: you know, gary was doing so much math with so little time. i'm not going to do that to you. i'm not as good at all of that counting. i can tell you this much though, that in the next minute, we are supposed to get another drop of vote counts and i want to give you a look at why that's happening because they are tabulating and they have been tabulating some of those 86,000 votes that came in early from friday, saturday, and sunday. so we are waiting for some of those to drop. 20,000 votes have dropped just a few, about a half an hour ago. so we're getting closer and closer. still at about a little over 70% of the vote count at this point in time. there was one thing we noticed that was very pointed that we heard from election officials. the head of the supervisor, the county board of supervisors here in maricopa county went after republicans who have been trying to say and accuse el

let's go to sara sidner, who is in phoenix, arizona, maricopa county, getting a sense of what is goingen there. obviously, there has been reporting, you have been reporting on some of the problems happening in maricopa county. how are things now? >> we are told that all of the problems have been resolved. but as you know, the polls did close at 7 pm. and we have heard from the chairman of the county board of supervisors, who apologized for the problems that happened earlier in the day. but said every single vote will be counted, rest assured. he wanted to make sure that voters knew that very clearly. in about six minutes, we are going to have some of those first results just rolling in. remember, in this county, about 85% of people vote early. and so, those vote counts, that you start hearing in just a bit here are going to be from early voters, people who came to the polls before today or mailed in their ballots as well. and so, that is what you're going to start hearing. by friday, we should have all the early votes, about 95 to 99% of those votes counted. and we will know what those
