sara sidner is standing by just south of there in clearwater, florida. ill be speaking to a storm chaser in just a few moments who travelled to florida to follow the storm. what we know right now, millions in florida are under hurricane warnings. rain fall totals could get up to 12 inches in some areas. a life threatening storm surge warning is in place for the big bend area of florida. evacuations have been ordered in at least 10 counties in the region and 32 school districts, multiple colleges also closed, including florida a&m, florida state university and the university of florida in gainesville. officials warn of punishing winds and flash flooding. meteorologist derek van dam is with us now. derek, what's the latest? what are we seeing as these updates start to come in? >> reporter: yeah. what people need to know is it strengthened to a hurricane officially at the 5:00 a.m. update this morning. one interesting thing to note as well is it is on its forward move. we're seeing that northerly progression at 14 miles per hour. that means it is picking up

let's go down the coast, sara sidner is in crystal river. sara experiencing, i think, some of that storm surge. >> yeah, we absolutely are. it is really starting to show, rear its ugly head, if you will, now. i am about 165 miles south of where john s i want to give you a view of what we're seeing in crystal river. now, crystal river is a very low-lying place, it's 3,400 or so people who live here, residents, it's a small town. it is also a town where the entire area of the town is in a flood zone, which is why authorities asked people diligently please to evacuate because of the storm surge, not necessarily because of the winds. we are not getting hurricane-force winds, we are getting tropical storm force winds and some of the rain is coming down. probably about 15 minutes ago, maybe 20 minutes ago this was clear. there was not water here. this is the parking lot of the best western hotel for anyone who has been to crystal river. the parking lot now has, i don't know, about a foot of water that is covering the parking lot. this was not the c

you are looking at live footage at clearwater beach where sara sidner is. derek van dam, our meteorologist, is also down there. a lot of preparation. very quiet right now. what is expected on the ground there? >> reporter: that is the thing. when you look at that picture from the drone, it looks like paradise. it is beautiful right now. but there are preparations underway. there are evacuations underway. there are mandatory and voluntary evacuations now in 20 counties. why is that? because a storm is coming. we know now that it's no longer a tropical storm. it has gained in strength to a category 1 hurricane and we are expecting that to grow even more powerful as this hurricane hits those warm gulf waters and intensifies to potentially a category 3. to remind people what kind of damage a category 3 storm can do, it's not so much about the wind as it is about the water. a category 3 storm, you will remember, hit in louisiana in 2005, hurricane katrina, and you remember the story there with the breaking of the looefs. it was all about the power of water. than

i'm john berman with sara sidner and kate bolduan.his is cnn "news central." ♪ >>> the georgia jail where donald trump and his 18 accused co-conspirators are expected to surrender is open and ready for bookings. in fact, the sheriff has made clear it's open 24/7, meaning any defendant at any time could turn themselves in. trump has not indicated exactly when he will be showing up, and there's also no date certain yet for the other 18 charged, but with a deadline set and nine days left, what he and his co-defendants decide to do within this time could matter a great deal in how this case plays out in court. we do know that rudy giuliani has given some suggestion, saying he will turn himself in next week, and trump's former chief of staff, mark meadows, is also making plans, but he's now trying to get his case moved out of georgia and into federal court. we will dive into that strategy, the strategy behind that in a moment. let's get to cnn's nick valencia, he's live outside the fulton county courthouse for more on all of this. nick, ta
