my wife sarah was an accomplished u.s. diplomat of 17 years who had served in haiti and vietnam -- i'm sorry, not vietnam. uganda. iraq, and washington doing u.n. security council and nato issues and most recently in ukraine. she was a lovely and deeply committed mother of our two boys who organized running races for the school kids in nearby parks. who led yoga sessions for work colleagues. we had just been evacuated from ukraine for our safety back to the united states. it was weeks later that she was killed in the nation's capital, or just outside of it. the irony of that is too thick for words. her death is emblematic of the crisis, the disaster we are seeing on our roads. dangers are everywhere and they persist, even though we know how to eliminate them. we know how to design roadways that encourage safe driving. and protect people. we know that slower speeds reduce the risk of death when crashes happen. and we know that we can encourage safer driving with education, incentives and disincentives, and getting dangerous
