. >>> let's check in with sarah dallof. i understand you have new information concerning highway 12 specifically. >> reporter: i can tell you, craig, that highway 12 is now allowing limited access into northern dare county. now, hatteras island, that's not in that part of the county, they are still not allowing anybody into hatteras island. as you recall, that was one of the islands under a mandatory evacuation, but crews are just starting to roll out, road crews, to inspect the road and survey the damage. they have traffic cams set up but overnight some of the views became obstructed by grit, that blowing sand and the dark really contributed to making it very difficult for them to see from those traffic cams. so they are getting out today, going out to assess the damage. they're cautioning people to stay off the roads as they find other obstacles that could present a danger to people. >> all right, sarah dallof for us in kill devil hills, north carolina. thanks. we'll check back with you a little later. also standing by ab

sarah dallof reporting in kill devil hills. we appreciate it. >>> joining us now by phone from pamlico county, chris murray. thanks for being with us here. >> how are you guys doing? >> we are doing well. we're looking at some of this video of the damage of trees down with the heavy rains and winds. considering that that storm has passed, what is the most pressing concern for you in your area right now? >> actually right now, we're in very good shape. most of our power has been restored. very minimal flooding. we did have some trees and power lines down. the weather is beautiful here today. i know our friends to the north in ocracoke have experienced more damage than we have. >> 44,000 people remain without power. what specific areas were affected there and what's the status of the effort to get the power back on for those people? >> here in pamlico right at the mouth of the pamlico sound, the noose river, we're in good shape again. our power company has been vigulent. they've been out all night and early morning. have got most

sarah dallof is live in the outer banks. good morning, sarah. are people there taking the threat seriously? >> reporter: they are, betty, but at the same time many are not quite yet ready to give up on their 4th of july beach week. here on kill devil hills, we're not under an evacuation order. we saw people packing up and hitting the road. stores are seeing a run on supplies, generators, batteries, food for people who are planning to stay and wait this out. looking at the beach yesterday, you would have no idea of this approaching hurricane. people were out in force playing on the beach, swimming, grilling, enjoying one last day of fun in the sun. >> you know, i've been coming here for the last 38 years of my life almost every year on the 4th of july. been a fantastic vacation. i'm kind of bummed that it's going to happen. >> i think it's going to be pretty big. going to have to evacuate soon. >> reporter: no storm is going to scare you guys away? >> no. we spent the money already, we're going to stay and enjoy it. >> reporter: conditions here r

for that we go to nbc's sarah dallof in kill devil hills. she's been reporting on the advance. and now the retreat of that storm all morning. what's the scene like right now, sarah? >> well, craig, we were sure happy to see hurricane arthur go. he wasn't wanted in the first place. now that he's gone away, we're actually seeing some sun in the skies picking through these clouds. some light wind. but absolutely nothing compared to the early hours of this morning when we were seeing 60 to 70 mile gusts of wind when the ocean was just churning and huge waves crashing on to the beach and the rain was sideways. well, right now as you can see, people are back on the beach. they are out with their dogs and their kites taking advantage of this wind. but swimmers, however, are not. lifeguards have been going up and down the beach putting up these flags reminding people right now that that rip current is just too dangerous. even if you are an experienced swimmer. meanwhile, like you said, emergency crews out on the barrier islands checking things out. the traffic cameras that they had up a

. >> sarah dallof has been out all morning for us in kill devil hills, north carolina. bill was alluding to they'll see sun later on today. sarah, you'll be glad that noaa is saying that at the moment arthur is now 105 miles east of norfolk, virginia, and that is north of you and that is why you are smiling there. >> reporter: yeah. we never wanted him and we are thrilled to see him go. we're actually starting to see the sun kind of peek through the clouds, and that is a huge change from where we've been in the last 12 hours. 60 to 70-mile-an-hour winds here at kill devil hills, just the stinging rain comes sideways and the surf really kicking up. right now the winds have died down, the rain has stopped. the people who opted to stay through the storm are starting to come out on the beach with their dogs, kind of check out how it's looking compared to yesterday. we lost several feet in elevation for erosion here on the beach, so that's very noticeable once you step out here. we sustained, like i said, winds 60 to 70 miles per hour, but very little damage we're seeing in t

sarah dallof is live in the outer banks where the wind is fierce right now. how are you holding it down there in all that wind? >> believe it or not it could be a lot worse. here at kill devil hills we've only seen winds of up to 60 to 70 miles an hour. about 30 minutes south from here, however, winds of more than 100 miles an hour. so relatively mild here if you can believe it. you know, we've been promising hurricane arthur for the past 24 hours. and just after midnight it delivered, pounding the outer banks here. we got about 20,000 people without power. believe it or not, we've got a couple people out on the beach. i'll leave it up to you to make your own judgment on that one. but for now, minor damage so far. we're seeing the wind bend something signs. we're seeing some shingles off the roof but not a lot of -- no corrugated metal, things like that. more fierce storms. you have crews standing by with heavy equipment so after the hurricane clears they can get to work removing sand and removing washover. right now, as i said, about 20,000 without power. he
