nbc's sarah james live for us in australia. them so confident that this really could be the linchpin to solving the mystery? >> reporter: well, thomas there's a couple of things about this piece that are important. first of all, in and of itself it's going to be studied for any potential clues. it might provide some information about how the plane hit the water. but it's really also important in terms of providing an end point if this does prove to be a piece of the wing of mh-370 that kind of provides the outer mark for wreckage and that's really important to the people who have been doing the drift modeling and this is making the assessment about how the currents work both east-west and that gyre, that circular motion. it's kind of a washing machine in the indian ocean as pieces get tossed around. so they've had to do these very complicated models to try to figure out where the wreckage where mh-370 would wind up. i spoke to david griffin who is the oceanographer who's leading the drift model task force. here's what he had to

me from australia outside the office where the search for mh-370 has been headquarters is nbc's sarah jamesis has reinvigorated the search efforts. >> reporter: that's exactly right, thomas. they've been working for such a long time, day after day, month after month, more than a year searching a very difficult treacherous part of the indian ocean, 200 people at a time in one port or another, keeping going. it's hard to keep up that energy and that momentum. and then to know that a piece of a large aircraft has been found, well, they are hoping that this may be a clue to the puzzle. and of course if that piece of debris does turn out to be a piece of a boeing 777, well, there is only one 777 that is missing. and that will make it very likely that it is mh-370. i spoke earlier just a few hours ago to the chief of the australian transport safety bureau. they're heading up this investigation. here's what he had to say. >> significance for us is if we get confirmation that it's associated with the 77 aircraft that probably with mh-370 then we will know based on drift modelling of surface debris

when james and sarah for roosevelt went on their honeymoon it was a year-long trip to europe because that's what you did after you got married. he took off to europe with your servants and your 300 bags on the steamer and you did the european tour. he didn't worry about who is paying the taxes back home. but what was remarkable despite that financial and social advantage, they really faced a great any obstacles too. certainly looking at eleanor's case, her childhood and her alcoholic father and her mother who died very young, just incredibly tragic so one of the things you see as despite her privileged position she still had a great deal to offer, and what next are so remarkable is that she was able to take that and translated into action and really have the empathy part and she could say it's not just enough that i overcame all the stuff that she could have very easily have said having overcome all of this i have earned the life of bees and now i'm going to enjoy it but instead she did just the opposite and really jumped into every imaginable challenge. again i'm not going to recap
