nbc's sarah james has the latest from christchurch. >> reporter: authorities in christchurch are putting a premium on public safety. more than 100 additional police officers will be on the beat as this city gets back to its first work day since the worst massacre in the country's history. 50 people were killed and 50 injured when the shooter opened fire at two mosques. more than 30 remain in the hospital and some are in critical condition. prime minister jacinda ardern says the alleged gunman, an australian, will be tried in new zealand. he has been charged with murder and authorities believe he was the sole perpetrator. two other people who were in custody were cleared in connection to this crime. authorities are also working as quickly as possible to identify the victims and to return the deceased to their loved ones for burial as soon as possible. >> it is likely, however, to be a small number to begin with. it is the expectation that all bodies will be returned to families by wednesday. >> reporter: as the city grapples with the trauma, many come here to this memorial at the botanic

let's go back to sarah james now. sarah is on the ground there in christchurch, new zealand where night has fallen. sarah, what's the scene right now? what's happening on the ground? >> reporter: well, i'm standing in front of the hospital, the main hospital here in christchurch where the victims are being treated. we're told 20 people were in critical condition. some of them have been shot more than once. of course, we know there are children as well as adults who have been injured. and this hospital is very close to the scene of that first shooting at the mosque, about a mile from where i'm standing here. we should point out that this investigation as it continues is going to cross over to australia. as you mentioned earlier, one of the gunman who is a suspect, the suspected gunman is being linked as an australian citizen. the intelligence services in australia are looking into this. because none of these names popped up on any security watch lists. as they continue this investigation, the prime minister of australi

joining me live from christ church new zealand is our sarah james. sarah, the sun is about to come up out there. you spent one night with this tragedy, what is the latest? >> reporter: what strikes me, katy, when i hear that all that kind of reporting on it is the way which this affects everyone. when i drove into the airport, i thr flew from austria, my taxi driver knew somebody who had been in the mosque. several people who were sitting next to me were coming back because they had people who they knew and love who are victims of the attack. this is a small community. what happened today affects everybody. behind me, i am standing in front of the major hospital here in christchurch. those injuries were severe. some of them are in critical conditions and some of them have been shot multiple times. we are talking about men and women and children, too. it is a horrific situation that continues and as doctors and medical personnel do their saving efforts, we have law enforcement who's trying to get to the bottom of this and trying to tease out who's conn

. >> joining us from christchurch, nbc's sarah james. sarah? >> reporter: well, good morning. and i will have to say it's about 6:00 in the morning here and the hospital behind me has been busy since the shooting took place, using about 12 different operating rooms as they continue to help 48 people who were injured in the attack in addition to the 49 whose lives were lost. and many of these people have been injured more than once, and some of them, of course, are children. this hospital was in lockdown earlier today and it is not far, just about a mile across the park, from the site of the first one of those shootings at the first mosque where this gunman went in and opened fire. and as you mentioned, we are going to hear more about that suspect. indeed, there are four people who have been arrested. one may or may not have something to do with it, but the other three appear to be persons of interest, and one person a 20 something has been charged with murder. the police have not said the name of that individual, but they will, of course, say more when we hear that in open cou

greenberg: sarah and james polk had no children.he reason for that, everybody is pretty sure, is because when james was a teenager he had crippling bladder stones. there was no known treatment for this at the time. about a doctord and to james over 100 miles to meet this doctor. the doctor did surgery on james to remove the bladder stone. it is pretty clear that the surgery left james unable to father children. so, he and sarah never had kids. one thing i would love to know, but they left no letters about this, is whether, when sarah agreed to marry james she knew they would not have any children. all of their at correspondents, and all of the correspondents who knew them the best, i have seen no evidence that they missed having children, or that they wanted to have children, or that they felt sad about not having children. one thing is for sure is that, the fact that sarah polk had no children is what allowed her to flour into a political partner for james, and really the most powerful political person at the time period. own siste

sarah james is in christchurch. sarah, good morning. what is the latest from there? >> reporter: the latest is the investigation into exactly what happened and more about this alleged gunman is pre-occupying law enforcement authorities here. the 28-year-old alleged gunman brenton tarrant appeared for the first time in court today. a brief an appeppearanappearanc. he did not have anything to say. he is remanded back in custody on one charge of murder. given the scale of the massacre, that is expected to grow. he will be back in court on april 5th. in the meantime, the investigation into the whiete supremacy aspect of the case is occupying authorities. prime minister jacinda ardern had something to say about that. >> what has been a global rise in extreme right-wing violent rhetoric, our agencies were aware of that and had been undertaking work. as i've said, this individual was not on any watch list. >> reporter: not on any watch list then, but what people want to know now is where was brenton tarrant? exactly what was all that overseas travel about? nbc news has lear

nbc news correspondent sarah james joins me now from new zealand. just to get an update, there were two different mosques attacked. do we now know whether the same gunman is responsible for both attacks or have other people been arrested? >> they believe the australian in custody was the sole gunman, that he was responsible for the attacks at both mosques. they believe he's responsible for the incredible carnage. 50 people killed and 50 people injured. in fact, there are more than 30 people in hospital. 12 of them are in critical condition. at the height of this they had 12 operating rooms in operation at the same time. it is hard to comprehend the scale of what they have had to deal with. the other two people who were arrested at the same time, both of them, they say, had nothing to do with this particular crime. but the investigation is continuing. it is an investigation here in new zealand and it also stretches across the sea to australia. the gunman is from australia. this is monday morning in new zealand. people will be getting back to work. ch
