more now from sarah murray who joins us from the white house. some questions were answered by the president. but the fact of the matter is, a lot was left unanswer. >> that's right. we got the answer that the president wasn't recording james comey, despite raising that potential on twitter. some 41 days ago. what we didn't get an answer about why he brought this up in the first place or why the white house decided to let this story linger for weeks and why the president refused to answer whether the tapes exist. it was interesting talking to republicans close to this white house, because they see it as a severe misstep on the part of this president. remember, trump's initial tweet is what inspired james comey to leak some of the details of his memos from meeting with trump. that's what unevidentably what led to the special counsel named to the russia investigation, which is exactly what the president wanted to avoid. what he ended up causing by these tweets about the tapes that don't exist. >> the white house was asked about a number of things,

sarah murray,this is the news that we were anticipating.esident used twitter to make the announcement. no tapes, no recordings of those conversations with comey. >> reporter: yeah. if you talk to anyone who has worked with the president in the past, anyone who knows the president, even people who serve in this administration, they have been telling us for weeks essentially that they did not really believe that there were any actual tapes. so in many ways, this is not a surprise. it does raise the question of why the president would have ever tweeted about tapes in the first place. that is what inspired james comey to leak the memos of his conversations with the president. those memos, of course, then prompted the naming of special counsel. so in many ways, by tweeting this out initially, which was essentially based on nothing, the president sort of created his own worst situation. the worst outcome. this is what he had been hoping to avoid. in many ways he precipitated it. >> very interested. i know you're getting ready for the white house

murray, what are they saying? >> reporter: well, brooke, on the plane ride back to washington, d.c., sarah huckabee sanders spoke toers and essentially said that they are reviewing this testimony. they didn't have a comment on it yet. it came out basically as president trump was leaving the stage here in cincinnati to head back to the white house. sarah huckabee did remark on the interesting timing. she didn't elaborate exactly what she meant but pointed it came out right after we saw dan coats and mike rogers testifying on capitol hill today. one thing that is interesting about watching the white house knave ga navigate this, they have put out documents and rapid response stuff this afternoon ceasing on the parts of the testimony that comey told president trump he was not personally under investigation in those private conversations. the reason, the republican national committee is handling so much of this is usually you'd see it come from the white house. they felt like they could not helm that effort from inside the west wing. a lot of it is getting kicked over to president trump's allies. we'll see how he feels
