all she needs to do is to read a transcript of sarah palin's interview with katie couric to get huge ssing not simply to palin, but to mccain. >> hi, how are you? >> great. how are you? >> i just found from mccain's campaign manager that they actually only met once before he started seriously considering her as a contender. >> joe lieberman really was the candidate he wanted. but he was convinced by his aides that that would create a revolt inside the republican party. joe lieberman is pro-choice, he's got liberal positions on other issues. >> let me quote from gail collins. she says, "the idea that women are going to race off to vote for any candidate with the same internal plumbing is both offensive and historically wrong." >> if john mccain wins, this woman will be one 72-year-old's heartbeat away from being president of the united states. and if that doesn't scare the [bleep] out of you, it should. that's all i have to say. i've always had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep— you know, insomnia. but then i found quviviq, an fda-approved medication for adults with insomnia. a

defending sarah palin.terrible when anybody goes after the spouses whether male or female of candidates. they're not running. finish but i will say that the it does bother me when somebody will get mad at a politico, but they won't stand up to donald trump when he puts down their spouse. ted cruz an example. mitch mcconnell's an example -- howard: all right. let me get back in here. >> i would just claim to you i think the media, especially the media today to the, is far more biased on this subject. i do agree with you that there's certainly political foes on either side that go after women in politics in these aggressive ways. but nicole wallace has her show because with she shivved sarah palin all those years ago, and she would not had that show -- howard: on msnbc. sunny hostin and whoopi goldberg attacked tim scott on "the view" saying he suffers from clarence thomas syndrome and thinking every black person can make it because he did, and the senator's been fundraising off those criticisms. remember that john mccain's running mate was sarah palin who was a proponent of birtherism, that conspiracy theory, that unfounded racist fear mongering that undermining the foundingf our nation's first black president, that turned historians against barack obama, that you can probably hear in the booing senator mccain tried to hush that night. mccain did this at a time republican presidential campaigns still actually conceded elections. alongside the nostalgia you may feel for that era, remember when republicans could admit they lost? there's also the fact senator mccain understood on election night in 2008 that his job was not to rile up the crowd, not to feed his supporters with words of grievance even though that's probably what a lot of them felt that night. instead mccain did the opposite, he tried to be the adult in the room. ee reminded people of the thing that drew the winner and loser together, that they both loved america. mccain had already shown his willingness to do this kind of thing when he famously talked down a republican voter at a town hall who promoted the baseless cons

it was like when i was asked to help with sarah palin's debate prep, my response was i'm not good enough. you know, it takes a message, otherwise you're just turning up noise louder when you spend more money. you know, that's the problem here. campaigns rarely and with the way people walloped and, they and because they either run out of money which is the main reason, or they just run out of time. so they'll hang in there. but listen, i think what david jolly said is really important, i've said this before, donald trump could not change the party he revealed the party. and he is what the party wants to be. and there's a reluctance to accept that, but it's the truth. and it's painful for a lot of us, but it's just inescapable true. >> it is indeed, and even brutally honest about that in your book which is why often people to read or book. david, last word to you. you and i have talked a great deal about desantis and authoritarianism in florida. nevertheless, were you shocked by his announcement this week that he would, quote aggressively go after pardons for 16 insurrectionists? >> no man

like sarah palin i can see kentucky from my house. i can see bashir lead.ust exuding public service. he doesn't pull punches it's working in kentucky you think he would be in trouble because it's normally a republican state. he's up for election this year and i think we will do well because he's just a public servant and i think it's a good sign don't fall for all the negative stuff. if you're a candidate or officeholder look at governor beshear you will see that people even in swing states or red states like kentucky when they see someone who is true to public service they rally around him. governor beshear has had to be through covid. he had a terrible shooting in louisville. he's had terrible natural disasters. he's just led and people reported that public leadership. i joke about this they didn't have to read my book. because they've done it for 30 years. my first book is laboratories of hypocrisy and that's not just a cute title. they were sort of suggesting the states are working in concert with something really anti-democratic in florida it shows up
