sarah smith was tony's patient who had died during surgery. >> anthony thought that dan smith was tryingth him for taking his wife away from him, and he thought enough to say, well, maybe dan was trying to take my wife away from me. >> investigators searched for arsenic throughout the pignataros' home. >> we searched the house from top to bottom looking for arsenic, pesticides and insecticides, anything that may contain arsenic. anything that looked suspicious, powdery was taken to be analyzed at the lab and came back negative. >> detectives interviewed debbie's daughter, since she, too, had some of the same symptoms as her mother. they asked her what she ate on the day she became ill. >> there was soup left on the kitchen table, and she ate some of it. that night she was vomiting. >> debbie then remembered an important detail, that tony made the soup that day. >> he brought me the bowl. and i remember saying, i can't eat all this. he's like, no, eat it, it's good for you. >> their daughter found some of that soup left over on the stove and took some. to find out exactly how long debbie

smith. five service members have been killed. sarah ganham is live in chattanooga. what else have we learned? >> reporter: you can see behind me this memorial has become very active specially after we have learned that the fifth service member has died. his family earlier in the week while he was still fighting for his life talking to cnn about what happened. his grandmother said he saw the shooter and tried to warn everyone around him. he was shot three times once in the stomach, once in the colon ond once in the liver. he had undergone surgery earlier in the week to try and repair those wounds. the family was praying hard. he was fighting hard and unfortunately, around 4:00 a.m. this morning, he passed away. some of that detail coming from his step grandmother who talked to our cnn affiliate about what happened. >> you can think this will never happen to your family but by gum, it can happen anywhere. >> reporter: as the memorial grows behind us there is an active investigation behind that at the navy recruitment center where other shots were fired before the five

the mother of navy sailor randall smith spoke through tears with our sarah dallof. >> reporter: is hehero? >> since the day i gave birth to him. i have half a heart left and it is more my daughter. he is gone. >> sarah's with us this afternoon from chattanooga and, sarah, where have investigators gotten in trying the find answers for this grieving community? >> reporter: hi, josh. investigators are chasing down some 200 leads. they have also discovered writings that talk about suicide and martyrdom dating back as far as 2013. according to a family statement, abdulazeez suffered from depression. a family representative said drug and alcohol abuse was a problem and that the trip of last year to jordan april to november was actually to try to get his life back on track. and to get away from what his family describe as bad influences here in tennessee. a childhood friend terry jones talked about a video abdulazeez made years ago as a class project and said it depicts him walking down downtown chattanooga walking to the beat of the music. he is wearing replicas of bombs strapped to the che

sarah, what else do we know about the sailor who died this morning? >> reporter: well, good morning, melissa. this is just another heartbreaking chapter in this tragedy. petty officer randall smithew he had been hit multiple times during the rampage on thursday. he was critically injured and this morning just after 2:00 a.m. we're told he succumbed to those injuries. the community reacting with shock and grief. you can see just a steady stream of visitors here behind me dropping off flowers and american flags. we've been able to talk to some who were just in disbelief, more shock now this rampage has claimed a fifth victim. meanwhile, the investigation into the shooter and his background continues. it is being conducted as a terror investigation although authorities say so far they have combed through all the suspect's electronics devices, computer phone, they haven't found any collusion of social media postings, messages or videos that would indicate he was inspired by or directed by isis to commit these terrible crimes. they are looking closely at his mideast travel. he took a trip from april to november. they know he was in jordan but they want to know where else he went spec
