harper sarah stinson caught up with the cities, new mayor to learn about what contributed to curbing deadly crime. >> progress that has been decades in the making east palo alto records, 0 homicides for the year 2023 as crazy. nra east palo alto became one of america's youngest cities when it incorporated into san mateo county in 1983. but it's bright future turned dark a decade later during the crack epidemic, the city became the nation's leader and per capita murders. 42 people were killed in 1992 when its population was just 24,000. words can describe emotion of this. for me. antonio lopez became the mayor of east palo alto 3 weeks ago. he was born and raised in the city after his family came from mexico in the 80's lopez recalls just how dangerous it was growing up. and my father would always talk about like that to put the blinds down. i mean, the drugs then put them the violence. the gangs as lopez went on to get his college education crime slowly went down at home while he was on city council. the city reported 5 homicides in 2022, he attributes the strength of the community.
