john sasaki is at police headquarters where officers are asking for the public's help. >> reporter: they frank, because even though it happened in the middle of the day at a busy intersection, they don't have much to go on. the intersection came to a stand still around 1:40 in the afternoon. that's when gunfire erupted. >> very dangerous, very brazen, in the middle of the day. >> reporter: three people were in this car, when another vehicle rolled up, and the person, or people inside opened fire. >> several shots were fired at the vehicle. at this point, we don't have any known suspect. >> reporter: the male driver, and a man in the backseat were able to run from the hail of bullets. the gunfire killed a woman riding in the passenger seat. >> it's a possibility there was someone else in the vehicle being targeted. >> reporter: police say they had previous contacts with both men who were in the car. this intersection is just blocks from hilltop mall, which is a busy shopping destination for west contra costa county. shoppers were gassed not only because this incident happened close by, bu

ktvu's john sasaki joins us with the latest on the investigation. >> during a press briefing today the fbi said 19 pipes that could have been turned in to bombs were removed from the couple's house last week. also today this photo emerged of farook and malik entering customs in july of last year. farook was born and raised in the united states. she came to the united states on a fianci visa. the fbi is calling this investigation on a, quote, massive scale, and saying they've already conducted 400 interviews. officials re-emphasize they've found evidence of a lot of pre-planning for the attack. >> we have learned and believe that both subjects were radicalized and have been for quite some time. >> doctors who treated the victims also spoke out today. they thanked the sheriff's department for providing the s.w.a.t. team for production when they went to the scene in the moments after the shooting. but the chief of surgery lamented many of the victims never had a chance to be saved. >> what really bothers me most is that none of the 14 who perished had a chance. >> investigators say they d
