this was so important to our family when i was away because of malia or sasha got sick or the babysitter not show up it was michelle who got the call. she had an employer who understood if she needed to leave work in the middle of the day or change her schedule suddenly. when she applied for the job she brought sasha who was about six months in her car seat into the interview. just to kind of explain this is what you will be dealing with if you hire me. and so they signed up for that and that flexibility made all the difference to our families. a lot of working moms and dads cannot do that. they do not have the leverage, they are not being recruited necessarily where they can dictate terms of employment. as a consequence if they need to bring their mom to the doctor or take an afternoon off to see their kids school play it would mean them losing income they cannot afford to lose. even when working from home is doable it is often not an option. even though studies show flexibility makes workers happier and raise productivity. same goes with paid family leave. a lot of jobs do not offer it

[laughter]. and so, i became a vice president at the university of chicago hospitals and it was one of the best experiences that i had because they, because he put my family first and i felt like i owed that hospital because they were supporting me and that's what we have to, we have to get employers to understand that this is about their bottom line as well. >> so your approach -- [applause] your approach to your career changed as you became a mother and how you first you learned, not to ask for part time. so you were more direct in what you needed and your employer responded. there are a lot of people though are going to say, yeah, but, i'm at risk if i do that.

sasha was still in the bassinet, the car seat thing, and -- because her point to her employer was this is who i am. i think i can do a really good job, but it means that if i have to take her to a pediatrician, i don't want to have to argue about whether or not i can do that. and if you are supportive of my efforts with my family, then you're going to get 110% out of me but you've got to have some flexibility in terms of time and so forth. a lot of employers i think are starting to realize that. it's harder for smaller businesses because if you only have four or five employees, it's harder to build in that flexibility. that's where federal policies, tax policies, child care policies, that can make a difference. it's not just to help the individual, it's also to help the small business who may not have the resources that a google or a ford motor company might have in terms of creating a more family friendly workplace. but this is an area that we're going to have to spend more time on. and, by the way, i just want to emphasize this, this is not a women's issue, this is a family issue. wo

then i had sasha, and we lost our babysitter which was probably the worst time of my, my motherhood.as so devastated because that balance, that work/family balance so to fragile. and you realize how fragile is the that with the blink of an eye, a broken toilet, a sick child, a sick parent, that that balance is thrown off. and after we lost that first babysitter, someone we developed trust with, you let them in your home, they were wonderful, they loved your kids, and then they left -- and she left for good reason, she left because she needed to make more money. but it was devastating. and i said then, i quit. i'm just -- forget it. i'm not doing it again. but i got a call from the university of chicago hospital. they wanted me to interview for a job. and by then i was ready to be done. but that empowered me. i said, you know, i don't even want this job. so i'm going to go to the interview, and i'm just going to be whoever i'm going to be. [laughter] and they're going to have to deal with it. and who i was at the time was a breast-feeding mother of a four-month-old -- [cheers and appl
