the hills and mountains are beautiful but they are saturated. another cause for concern in this south bay is reservoirs them are fall. officials are watching the lexington. a lot of rain could cause it to start overflowing next week. take a look at the east bay. terry mcsweeney is there watching the storm and possible impact there. >> reporter: good morning, amy. so many times we have nothing but bad traffic news. commuters in the east bay, right now is 880 southbound between marina and davis street all lanes open six minutes ago. caltrans crews picked up the cones and now everything is back to normal and everybody back at or slightly above the limit. take a look at the problem, we have video of caltrans working unclogging a big drain they have out here. it was spread out to number one and two lanes because of a 2:00 a.m. downpour. crews came out and unclog it. reopened all lanes. here is what the chp expects when the storm hits. flooding, debris, there is a lot of wind. people need to slow down and give themselves enough room. look up ahead and

you can see what happens when the ground becomes too saturated.tree yesterday afternoon cut this house in two in scott's valley. even though the owner was in the kitchen at the time, remarkably, he was not hurt. this incidentally is not far from the rock slide that shut down a road earlier this week isolated several people on the other side of the slide, cutting them off for vehicle access. they have foot access, they just can't get cars in and out. and there are some other pictures here, this lull in the rain allowed the san lorenzo river to subside. yesterday afternoon there were over 800 people asked to evacuate their homes because of concern that is the river was going to crest over and flood during the afternoon into their yards. this does happen over the years when you get a lot of rain in the mountains. felton does have a tendency to flood. santa cruz county lifted the evacuation order last night and the people were allowed to go back home. i'm sure like me, like them, they are keeping their fingers crossed that maybe this is the extent of

the ground is so saturated it cannot hold any more water.today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the santa cruz mountains with a look at the latest conditions there. bob, are you sinking into the ground? >> reporter: no, unfortunately, for the people here in the santa cruz mountains, marla, they have no choice when the spigot turns off. this is not good news to get more rain. fortunately, it is not a downpour, but it is heavy rain. and the more rain the worse off they are here because, as you mentioned, the ground is very saturated and the soil is loose. we have seen caltrans with their plows going up and down, back and forth, on highway 17. which is behind you right here in the santa cruz mountains. they are pushing off any rock or debris that could be pushing out into traffic. you can see they have this front-end loader on standby in case they need it for a much bigger job. you know, a mudslide, for instance. we have only seen one instance in which that might have been needed but workers already cleared that up. we have take an look at p

it is spread out over the week because the ground out here is saturated. so nonetheless, we did get to spend time with the people who live out here in the santa cruz mountains. not one to sit around and wait for rock slide to get cleared. they aren't going to let that natural disaster get in the way of living. >> in the santa cruz mountains, the 40-foot tall, 200 foot rock slide that is at worse, an inconvenience. >> we live in the mountains. it's great fun. it's cheap, free entertainment. >> the tractor and a can do mounting spirit, neighbors simply cut a path around the slide through poison oak and ankle deep mud. this basically qualifies as a road now in scott valley. it's the only way into and out of the slide area. the concern now is it just started raining. the first of five inches to fall in the santa cruz mountains this week. families spent the afternoon working together to beat the storms. navigating the muck and positioning cars on either side of the slide before the rains really made the makeshift road impassable. by the end of day two, neighbor

and we've got windy conditions and already saturated ground out there. our soils are very, very moist. so we are concerned about the potential of downed power lines and trees as we head throughout the morning. the most active weather period for the greater bay area will be between about 9:00 a.m. and noon. and we are expecting excessive rain runoff so you really want to take it easy. don't drive through areas where you cannot detect the depth of the flooding. that's a very dangerous scenario. of course, we'll check with mike inouye about where we are already seeing the flooding impacting your morning drive. take a look at this rain already spreading to the south. this is the steady rain, this is not even the brunt of it. we'll see the moderate rain push in heading throughout this afternoon. and take a look at this, already noticing a little bit of lightning firing off just to the west of eureka. this is the unstable portion of this storm sliding south. we, too, will likely see lightning and thunderstorms in our area. we'll be watching this very closely f

to the north of the bay we do have heavy rain now saturating mill valley. you see all that activity offshore. it is all lifting up in a north easterly direction. let me show you what i mean by one of our latest satellite images. this is the area of low pressure. i'll get out of the way so you can see it there. and notice the core, the center. low is way back here. this is the front that is trapping some tropical moisture that has precipitation all the way back to the hawaiian islands. we have rain that will be funneling into the bay area. meanwhile, you couple that up with our already saturated soil and this is why we have a flash flood watch in effect for all of our bay area mountains from the north bay all the way to monterey bay. so that means that you can see some flooding on our local roadways at any time from now all the way really into about friday. temperatures tonight to overnight into the 40s. 50 degrees in oakland. meanwhile this area of low pressure right on its heels as yet another system -- so once the rain begins to taper off by tomorrow nigh
