sal castaneda is live in sausalito where the birds were released an hour ago. good afternoon sal. >> reporter: good afternoon. we were right here when they released them just a little while ago and we have video tape to show you of that release that we captured. six birds were released after spending weeks at the international bird rescue center in fairfield. the birds were first spotted last month in the waters off the east bay. they were covered in a gray rubber cement type substance. the birds would have died unless they were treated. the substance still has not been identified and the source of the mystery goo is still underknown. 170 birds were collected by the center and after today's release. about 80 remain in recovery. >> we are doing this all on our own. there is no responsible party on this because we still don't know what the substance is that was in the bay. like i said, four weeks ago. so we have incurred quite a bit. it is a bit of a hit for our organization. these birds take a lot of care. they are up at our fairfield center right now. >> report

you can see just a few cars there heading out of sausalito into marin county. but they should be opening the new extra lane shortly. here's the san mateo bridge looks all clear so far between hayward and foster city not seeing any big delays as you head out toward the peninsula. and the bay bridge they should be in the final clearing process of wrapping up that overnight roadwork. they just had the right lane blocked overnight so it doesn't cause any huge backups early this morning but right now just a couple of the cash lanes filling in getting into the city. and we have been watching this full freeway closure. southbound 880 at marina approaching san leandro until 4 a.m. they had that freeway ramp completely -- that full freeway closure in effect. you had to use the off-ramp to get off and back on the freeway. right now they just have a couple of lanes blocked coming into san leandro but you can get by without any delay all the way to 238 or you can always right bart because everything is on time. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." frank and michelle, back to
