there's savannah.e were just talking about hilton head, greg. 17 miles off of the shore right there, is this right here, which appears to be the center -- or the eyewall, what is left of the eyewall, and this would be the strongest winds that exist and they're only 17 miles offshore. the storm has been moving towards the north. it has not begun that northeast turn, at least in any dramatic way, and that means a good chance we're going to be seeing at least this wall get right here towards the coast, maybe around buford, towards hilton head, and maybe still rotating around here back towards the savannah area, with the very strong wind. so we are probably in the next couple hours, going to see the worst of what we've seen from this storm over the last now say almost 40 hours, we've been talking about it. we're about to see probably the worst of it -- the worst of the storm surge moving in towards it is charleston area, the worst of the wind, and the rain is also going to be increasing more than we've see

so the savannah river is behind us, which lets out into the atlantic and connects to the port of savannah, which is a rather large port. i was told by locals here that the high tide with the savannah river actually is on about an hour to two-hour delay from the atlantic ocean. so, you know, the height of the storm 2, 3 a.m. at high tide, we may not see the effects here until an hour or two later, than is very dangerous. i worked in tucson, arizona at one point and i remember they always used to say be careful of the washes there, the dry river beds, because whether it would rain there the washes would sort of fill up with rain and in an instant there would be flash floods. the same situation could occur here with the savannah river if it, you know, overflows the river bank here. guys. >> joel, i know that you have sort of been in that position much of the day. are you getting a sense that people there in savannah did, in fact, heed the warnings from officials and evacuate? >> reporter: yeah, definitely. i mean, there were some stragglers yesterday. i think i mentioned they are having a co

high tide in savannah is 2:06 and it's happening as we speak. there's the example we're kind of anticipating. this is what we were expecting see. you can see that the savannah river, this wide river that divides south carolina from georgia at this point, has now come over the banks and is moving in pretty fast into this little park area that we have here where you can sit here and maybe eat a sandwich and just check out the view and stuff. this has really just come in, in the last 30, 40 minutes, this has come up and moved in so quickly and we have a lot of water here now and it just keeps coming in. we're going to have to wait how much higher this gets as we are hitting high tide. this is an example how much water we have. here on the street, on river avenue, this is all rainwater, because that it's high tide and the surge has not -- has not breached this little wall right here. so this is how much rain we've gotten and i'm splashing around in, and here's your storm surge and your river coming up, as well. this combination of water is a lot of

>> we have the storms off the coast of savannah. sit actually about 70 miles southeast in savannah. looking north. so savannah, i think is going to be spared from the center of it. it's going to be very, very close. this is a wind map that you can see here. that right there are winds that are close to the coast here. a little bit of an easterly jog. we have not had land fall from this hurricane just yet. if we do see that it's going to be over charleston and up the carolina coast line. we're going to see tropical storm-forced winds before this thing is done. from the center of it, it we'll see as well as because of the winds the worse of the storm surge and so this is where we like to see the worst of it. i think we're going to get in towards record breaking territory as well. latest information from the hurricane center, 105 miles per hour winds. pressure holding steady there. you can see weakening and still holding together well. that means weakening at this point is unfortunate as this pulse north. we have a very significant rainfall risk going on. some spots may be a foot to foo

same for areas around savannah.taibe island, hilton head island, over towards beaufort, we have a very long next few hours coming. it's still bad, and probably in that area, the worst we've seen. >> hurricane matthew is going to operate like a thief in the night. rick, thank you. >>> hurricane matthew is continuing the track as rick pointed out, up the atlantic coastline and in its path still is a vana, georgia. that's where caroline is located. caroline, what's it like? >> this is the worst we've seen, greg. you've got to think to keep our cameras dry and lights on, we found a little cove here. we're blocked by two very thick brick walls that have been here for decades. closer to the water, the winds are unbelievable. the real worry is the water that rick spoke about. i've talked to plenty of people who have lived here decades and said they've never seen the water like this. the savannah river yesterday, they were shocked that it was so high on its banks. now we're seeing white caps, it's coming over river street.

that coincides tomorrow morning with savannah river's high tide at the savannah river where there could be a real problem there. the storm surge is going to be the story with it at least into the savannah area. as this system moves forward on shore over the next few hours that storm surge will move in and the high tide will build in and the rain will come down. flooding is almost a certainty for them. along the savannah river right where the hotels are right in town there as this storm moves further north, not so much storm surge, but heavy rain and strong winds with trees donates system hits with more of a perpendicular angle. so the story will continue and the storm doesn't go away tomorrow. it will stick off the central east coast for the next three days. when i come back, i'll talk more about the hurricane and what you can expect this weekend. >>> charities in the bay area and across the country are reaching out to help the hurricane victims in haiti. u.s. marines have arrived to assist survivors of the storm. as many as 60,000 people are staying in shelters. here in the bay area a

the headlines will come from savannah and south carolina. i don't think -- it's bad in florida, but savannah, north into south carolina towards hilton head. the storm surge right now anywhere from 10 to 12 feet. 9 feet kind of averaging along the coast. then you have got all the water, especially in south carolina, coming out of those hills. they have had major flooding issues for the last three months in the carolinas. they are going to see a lot of water out of that river at the high tide storm surge. tons of problems there, as well. the other side is all this water, this rain, we are talking about the concerns for the zika virus because in this area the mosquito colonies and where we will have standing water in many places. it's an ongoing story. this is a story that's not going away this weekend. this hurricane turning to a tropical storm will be around early next week off the central united states. when i come back we will talk about your forecast. >> thanks, bill. >>> in haiti, the death toll from hurricane matthew has reached a stagge

fox's joel waldman is in savannah. joel, it is pouring there. that's for sure. >> reporter: dawn, good evening to you. unfortunately, it is pouring and it's pouring on my head and it's been doing so for about eight hours straight. we have not felt the wind to the extent that we thought we would although we're getting pushed around with gusts here and there. keep in mind though the winds are kind of tethered to the eye of this hurricane and matthew is now moving up about 12 miles an hour from saint simons island in georgia about 90 miles away you figure the brunt of the storm will be here in five to six hours time. the issue with that it's going to coincide with high tide. they're expecting were you a six to 9-foot storm surge. you couple that with 7 feet of water during high tide you're talking potentially 16 feet of water. it's going to somewhere. that's savannah river behind me which is actually on the delayed high tide bye-bye an hour or two. this area will flood out behind me. the question is, how bad will the other coastal areas around here

but for now we plan to stay in the city of savannah. we are hunkered down safely in a hotel and we will take cover when need be. >> all right. be safe out there. thank you. >>> more with chief meteorologist about the track of matthew, this is shaping up to be something potentially really serious. >> this is unprecedented for parts of south central or south central florida. southeastern florida. and central eastern florida. tybee island is barely above sea level. nothing is going to get just hammered. i've been there numerous times. there's a river that runs through there. savannah as this gentleman told you is nearly 20 miles inland. evacuating the entire city. powerful storm. in some ways i was chatting with mark tamayo, we were both saying probably better if this hurricane were to slam directly on shore and start to fall apart. instead the plan is for this thing to scrape right up the eastern seaboard and you see what it does? so half of the eye on shore, able to continue to feed on the warm water, of the gulfstream. so this storm has

john's and into savannah and tybee, st. simon's, into charleston, those areas can flood easily even without significant wind, just because of rain. and there's a lot of rain coming. this is a very wet storm. later today, we are just about to the parallel of tybee and savannah, then charleston and finally out to sea. but as this storm runs up the coast, it will make a lot of rainfall. significant rainfall, up to ten inches. that concerns me a little bit even with the potential for some sinkholes. that's always a potential when you get so much water in florida and you have an aquifer that's been drawn down a little bit. think about that as you're driving around. if you say that doesn't look right, stop the car and make sure. we will have ten inches of rain from jacksonville all the way north even into almost the upstate of south carolina and the piedmont to north carolina depending how quickly it moves away. that could cause river flooding, let alone the water that wants to go the other way which is salt water flooding. let's

we took a ride in downtown savannah and checked some things out. the city has faired quite well in this. i kind of put myself in the worst part and i'm just getting creamed right now. that was the strongest i felt when i started doing this tonight. we went out. i saw a lot of downed tree limbs. it's just like a dream when we drive through this. we didn't love any trees. nothing came down completely from what we saw and we did a substantial drive. we went into a low lying area and saw a big roadway just watched out. we were in a chevy taho. i didn't think we could get through it. there was a lot of water there. from what we saw, we went down some of those really beautiful streets. bull street and some of the other streets in savannah and everything seems to be fairing quite well at this point. as i look behind me, that's river roads that came up. it looks like it came up two or three inches, so we're hoping the tide is about coming up and the storm surge is about -- hopefully about through for the sake of everybody that owns businesses in low lying

the areas around savannah. if you are in the brunswick area or charleston to georgetown, you are staring at this saying this is going to be a close call. it's not a major hurricane, but even a category two with a wind of 90 to 110 miles per hour. that's what we saw during the day. the storms on the track northward by 2:00 a.m. at the closest point from savannah, georgia. we don't know if they will go through the western eyewall. if it does, you will have significant power outages and problems in the area. we will get the storm surging into the area and that will be bad in the bruniswick area. it will be worse this afternoon into this evening all the way through the coastline of georgia and through there into south carolina. if we had to pick a location with the best chance of getting landfall and maybe right in the area of charleston and the storm goes off the coastline of north carolina and saturday night, the outer banks is mostly okay, but heavy rain. i want to bring you to the other computer. the big issue

proverbial ghost town right now in savannah, georgia. across the street you can see the shops are bored up one is a commercial real estate office. the other a bakery. they've got tape up in the windows further down the street you see they are bored up with some sand bags as well. might be a little difficult to make out, but you can rest assured people here are boarding up. this is the first mandatory evacuation along the georgia coast since 1999 when hurricane floyd came through. this is another shop which is a late night diner as you can see it says we love you, savannah and over here it says, matthew go away. savannah actually has not taken a direct hit since 1898. hoping to keep that it way, but it looks more and more like hurricane matthew is making its way here. one of the only places that you'll find open is sweet melissa's pizza which is an institution here in savannah, georgia. as you can tell people are enjoying their food. one of the only places literally that is open. so you know what we are eating to night. meanwhile most peo
