and don't live a maybe life. >>> now to diane sawyer's exclusive interview with amanda knox. the center of an italian murder mystery that became a global sensation convicted in a 2007 murder of her roommate amanda spent four years in an italian prison before an appeals court set her free. today she releases her memoir "waiting to be heard." and our good friend diane always good to see you. >> great to see you in the morning. >> we have been waiting to hear from her. you spent a lot of time with amanda. what were your impressions? >> you know, you and i have been talking. there are some interviews you want to make sure every single person watching gets to look at her face, look in her eyes and make up their own mind about her. she was in prison, 1,400 nights fighting this for six years and she just learned right before this interview she just learned that another italian court says she has to start it all over again, so every word she was saying could affect her freedom. here's what she said of the blow of that decision. what was your reaction when you heard the supreme court

here's abc's diane sawyer. >> reporter: on december 14th, as a shooter stalked the halls of sandy hook elementary school, a teacher, gathered up her 15 tiny first graders and hit them in a bathroom, turning out the light so the shooter wouldn't see. holding on to them as the gunfire sounded. she told me about it that same day, just hours after the tragedy. >> i said "i need you to know that i love you all very much and that it's going to be okay." i thought that was the last thing they were ever going to hear. >> reporter: that was almost four months ago. she is still teaching those same first grade students she sheltered through the tragedy. do they ask you about it? >> they don't ask specifically. things come up. noises are really hard for them. understandably so. on the day the noises they heard were loud and scary. noises are difficult. if they refer to anything they say things like, you know, "remember the bad guys that day?" it really is here and there. it's not a constant. not an often presence. >> reporter: after the shooting, the president invited her to the state of the union
