[solo saxophone plays] (tesar) if i'm playing with a group, i have to coordinate certain elements ofarmonic accompaniment with other players particularly the bass player. he and i have got to be in agreement. (man) the main function of the bass is to play the bottom note of the chord. that's pretty much what you're hired for. that's your function. that's your responsibility. outside of that, you can play other notes in the chord, for instance, the piano player or the guitar player is playing a g chord. the root of that chord is a g note. now other notes in the g chord would be the g and the b or the third, moving up to the fifth, which is d, and then, in the octave, another g at the top. you can use those notes to create an interesting line, you know, that's the first-- those are the most common tones, the most inside notes to play that will agree with what the piano player is playing. oh, let's try that again. yeah, right. i might play four measures, then the drums might be featured for four measures, and the saxophone might play four measures, then again featuring the drums. we call it trading. we start passing the ball around the band a little bit, and we trade back and forth four measure phrases. [plays sample] and the drums would take it. [drum solo] the way of featuring a drummer without maybe necessarily all of a sudden having the music stop and feature only the drummer. there were companies that were offering to provide that large jazz band with the most powerful saxophones to be able to fill this space. others use imperial palaces that they had left behind when they could rival monte carlo. in fact frederic encountered serious competition from people with deep pockets. he was also flagrant with his money when he was flushed. he liked to show friends a good time. the result was a 1926 after several years of spectacular success he had no protection from any government agency. americans didn't want him and the russians were too far away and indifferent. so he was left his own devices. his properties and a stumble were seized ways turkish creditors. he didn't give up. he tried to escape to the new capital. he tried again to stop a new operation but he was arrested for his debt and transferred to an old a ghastly presence in constantinople where he languished for about six months before he again contracted pneumonia by the summer of 1928. he became seriously ill with he was transferred into the care of catholic nuns and he died in their hospital on june 12th

cynthia wesley, 14, was an honor student who enjoyed playing the saxophone in her school band and on that fateful sunday was going to be her first day serving as an usher in church. although there are many individuals and events of the civil rights movement that rightly are worthy of recognition, the selection of the four little girls was emblematic of so many who sacrificed and lost their lives for the cause of freedom. medgar evers, emits till, jimmy lee jackson, as well as virgin wear and james johnny robinson who was also killed within hours of the 1963 bombing. they were all martyrs for justice who we should never forget. it was their blood which was shed for the bounty that so many of us now enjoy. while we recognize that this medal cannot in any way replace the lives lost nor the injures suffered as a result of the horrific bombing, i hope this medal serve as as a powerful reminder of the importance of the many sacrifices made and the great achievements obtained so that this nation could live up to its ideals of equality and justice for all. this nation should never forget tho

ana's father jimmy is a very well noted saxophone player. hartford native. the family had come back to connecticut to raise their kids. ana was musical. she used to love to sing and dance. she loved most of all doing that at church. she was so connected to her church. she loved reading the bible. she loved having the bible read to her. she loved being part of the dance and singing experience at her church. her parents said that she -- she didn't walk anywhere. that was not her method of transportation. her mode of transport was to dance from place to place. she survived by her older brother isaiah, a third grader at sandy hook elementary and who survived that day. ana, you can find on youtube. ana's performances having viewed hundreds of times online was a talent and she had talent in her blood. who knows whether she was going to choose music and dance as a career, but those creative muscles that she had and the amazing parents that were raising her was going to assure that she was going to be something really, really special. she died that day horribly, but
