our meteorologist sayaka mori joins us for the details. sayaka? >> yes, gene people in the british isles experienced the wintry mess on thursday. strong winds, and heavy snow battered wide area. that affected traffic. now we have some video coming out of manchester. snowy weather hit scotland and northern england on thursday grounding flights and causing hazardous driving conditions. the snow plows were the only moving thing at the manchester airport. despite the call out for dangerous road conditions, long lines of cars were struck on the streets. some woke up to find their cars completely covered in snow. now the heavy snowmaker is starting to pull away from the british isles. so the area of snow and windy conditions are starting to cover the continent. as you can see the isobars are very closely packed. that means strong winds are blowing for a wide area. so quite cold conditions and also blustery conditions are affecting many parts of europe. now, i want to focus on this low pressure system to the south. is actually packing quite a lot of mois

our meteorologist sayaka mori joins us for the latest. sayaka? >> yes, gene much of new jersey and new york expect the worst but however much of the new england coast saw extremely heavy snowfall and hurricane force winds. now, take a look at this picture. we saw quite heavy snowfall in boston on tuesday. snow shut down the city and this is connecticut, cars were completely buried in snow and hundreds of flights were canceled at the jfk international airport on monday. quite a lot of snow fell in the northeastern u.s. now the heavy snowmaker is situated very close to southeastern canada. labrador newfoundland, you could be picking up heavy snowfall as well as fierce winds. so blizzard warning is still in place at the region. looking quite sunny over the northeastern u.s. but new york city and washington, d.c. on wednesday. however, another batch of snow is coming in to the coastal locations. so snow will be continuing. take a look at this forecast new york sunny weather on wednesday, but snow will return on thursday with a high of only 1 degree.

sayaka. >> yes. the last week of january is typically the coldest time of year and we're expecting to see snowflakes in the metropolitan area and we have a low pressure in the central part of japan moving towards the east. as it does so it will drag colder air from the north and spread moisture from the south and provide widespread snowfall including tokyo. and tokyo may see snowfall early friday morning and change to rain during the daytime hours. if the temperature does not rise we may see snow accumulate inging into the afternoon. approximately 5 millimeters of snow could occur in tokyo. it's not the accumulation but we may see some and some snow could cause traffic disturbances in tokyo and could affect our morning commute. >> is on the menu for western japan. you may get up to 20 centimeters. it is not a big issue friday but during the weekend, snow is likely to come back. across the north western portions of the university you saw nearly 90 meters of snow in just two days like in massachusetts.
