"an sba lender will be able to make the loan with a guarantee that sba will be able to provide. we probably will about 225 sba loans this year. at any point in time, we have about 1500 loans in san francisco that are sba loans. a lot of them are restaurants because that is one of the areas that is very typical because it is a riskier business. but a lot of people in san francisco see that as an opportunity for them as well. we also partner with the golden gate restaurant association to help people understand how to do financing for restaurants. a lot of what we do is helping small businesses get access to credit. the sba loan program covers a range of small loans down to $25,000 and large loans up to $5 million, so it is a very wide range. can be used for a variety of uses -- debt refinancing, building acquisition, working capital, so it can be used for a wide range of things from a small business point of view. as you heard, we do guarantees for about 90 or 100 banks in the country -- or in the bay area. about 3000 nationwide. there is a lot of lenders that do some sba lending.

what impact will be cuts in the sba budget have on the sba program? it seems the small business committee is try to make drastic cuts. from our perspective, the new majority leadership is looking to make drastic cuts, many of the program will hold near and dear to our hearts. the question the leader is continually asking is, show me the jobs. she wants to see house bills come to the floor that create economic opportunity for middle- class -- all of americans. if the small business committee is looking to cut funds from the sba, we see that as a detriment. we do not believe in cutting to create more jobs. we agree with the idea of the recovery act, putting more money out there to get people employed. >> on congressional action, that is not my role. in san francisco, we have been the beneficiary. all small businesses should be aware that we have been the beneficiary of a lot of good resources for small businesses. we have more nonprofits that are funded through micro lending here in the city from sba programs. some are expected to be looked at for budge

sba does finance for business. they're buying commercial realist to operate the business there. >> >> and they're bigger so the average loan size is larger because of that. what we see for a lot of women owned business they're lower in terms of hard assets to run the business, personal businesses and home base businesses and we see a lot of the women owned business can have lower cost of entry and as a result able to run businesses without buying real estate to do that and as the businesses are getting larger we are seeing those are buying real estate to expand their business. i think what we will see going forward the percentage of women on business as they grow through micro-financing and more well established businesses a higher percentage and that's happened over time and sba lending in san francisco has grown to the teens and now to 30% of the business. >> thank you. >> commissioner shorter. >> thank you for the presentation. it's very enlightening. i think this is a hard question but one that has to be asked.

we get sba funding for a womens' center here in san francisco and allows us to do enhance marketing for women and fashion programs and classes for women with day care and child issues. since its inception in 1999 the womens' center has served 10,000 women including training and classes and workshops. financial resource center, the fashion program and our speaker in women series. it's not like the umbrella organization that has been around since 1985. some of our recent successful speaker workshops include the fashion designer tory burch and at last we're we had a roundtable with the district supervisor malia cohen. renaissance loves success stories. many of you may know gail [inaudible] and her truck is parked outside of city hall on fridays. she is one of the success stories. i attached three stories to the packet so you can read about them later but gail came to renaissance and wanted to start a food business. didn't have enough money to start a brick and mortar location and she was there and open the truck when it was opportune to do so and she started a second food truck and is empl

at sba, the fastest-growing sector of small business in the united states was hispanic-owned businesses, and i believe it still is. that represents about 3 million companies in the united states. those companies are generating about $500 billion in revenue. and those numbers could double every five years. they are the engine of america. a lot of those small businesses are not thriving right now. those 3 million hispanic businesses employ millions of latinos. sometimes, small businesses feel that their government does not really understand what they do every day. they do not feel like they have a strong advocate or partner for them. sometimes, they feel on the defensive by their own government. i am not talking about just federal government. state government, local government, etc.. louise gutierrez, congressman from the great state of illinois. while we are talking about the , asomy, and the fact hector suggested, that so many small businesses feel like government is in the way, that increasing regulation is making it more difficult for them to advance their businesses and their entrepr
