[applause] lastu can imagine these 3.5 months have been pretty challenging times for me and my family, but if you look at the outpouring of love, of warmth, of prayer, my gosh, jennifer and i have been overwhelmed with all of the outpouring and it has given a strength to get through all of this and to get to this point today. it starts with god. [applause] when i was laying out on that ball field, the first thing i did once i was down and couldn't move anymore is i just started to pray. and i'll tell you it gave me an unbelievable sense of calm knowing that at that point it was in god's hands. but i prayed for very specific things. i will tell you pretty much every one of those prayers was answered. and they were some pretty allenging chairs i was putting in god's hands. he really did deliver for me and my family and it just gives you that renewed faith and

[ applause ] >> the house minority leader you. something that a lot of people will be saying today. as you were saying, tom, it really was initially the report that he wasn't that seriously wounded. that was not the case. >> the surgeons and his staff over the next week or so repeated several times he was quote in imminent risk of death. what we did not appreciate. you can cut -- you cut bones, internal organs and it was very serious. then he was readmitted to the icu several times for serious infections. so this was very much touch and go. we should remind the audience that the suspect in this, 66-year-old james hodgkinson was killed by capitol police. he died a short time later. crystal griner shot in the leg, zack b.a.r.t. shot in the leg. another shot in the chest and steve the police officer not shot but injured with leg injurie

staff didn't know how congressman scalise was going to end up. lot of concerns about the depth of his injuries, the damage that had been done. they noted internal organs were hurt. you could look in a snippet from a "60 minutes" interview running on sunday, skungsman scalise -- congressman scalise said they needed to put me back together, that's how bad the damage was internally. no head's up he was coming back to the capitol but lawmakers have been waiting for the moment since the june shooting and interestingly enough, the fact that he's coming back at this time, very key time in the house as they look forward on legislative opportunities, i will tell you when lawmakers started to get the sense he was on the upswing and out of a bad place, was when he started participating in conference calls and as his role in the house, he is the one who basically gathers the votes to move their agenda forward. all of a sudden he started calling in to their weekly whip meetings and asking where the votes were. what he needed to do. could he make phone calls.
