let's get right to our crews at the scene. ryan kruger is there for you. ryan, what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, when you look at this scene, it really is remarkable this no one died as a result. what we are showing you used to be a townhome with several units. it's not that anymore. they were destroyed. now residents are telling me that they smelled a natural gas leak earlier in the day earlier this evening and then suddenly the unthinkable happened. the flames spread quickly. residents shared this cell phone video of the blaze with us. devonte sewell was walking down the street toward the townhome. >> the flames started coming from the middle of the building. like every building caught on fire like three buildings. they all just collapsed in. >> reporter: two people were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. one was a resident suffering from respiratory problems, the other a baltimore gas and electric employee who was working in the complex. >> we believe he was working on a potential concern of a natural gas leak or order of a

take a look at the scene. you can see it happened in this parking lot outside of this group of town homes. police are focusing on that vehicle right there. it's not clear what relationship that vehicle has to the rest of this crime scene but police have been here since about 12:30 this morning right after the shooting happened. and they say when they got here, they found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. two men and one woman. one of those men was pronounced dead here at the scene. the man and the woman were taken to the hospital in critical condition. now, police have not said who the shooter was or the motive behind this shooting and they also haven't said who these people are if they live in this neighborhood or if they were visiting people. police also haven't released the names of those victims. however, i've been talking to some neighbors in the past few minutes and they tell me they do have a problem with some squatters that have been living in one of those town houses right there in front of

you can see it's still very much an active scene. detectives are working the scene. still combing the area for evidence. but we want to show you this picture. a silver vehicle which is an unmarked police car. and you can see, if you look closely at least, one bullet hole that pierced the car in this cross fire. that's how close it came to striking the officers inside. and all of this began around 1:30 this morning when police were approaching the suspect who they believed was involved in another shooter nearby on madison street. at some point, shots were exchanged and the suspect was shot in the leg and eventually arrested near jefferson. we spoke with one man who asked not to be identified but described seeing the suspect down on the ground after police made the arrest. >> he was shot. you know, laying down. and that's just about it. he just was waiting for the ems to come. and by that time, it was a lot of police enroute and police officers at the scene already. you know, taking out the tape, blocking off the area. >> reporter: and again, no officers hurt in this e
